商品の説明

The impoverished Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro come to Venice in search of the heir to the throne of Barataria, inconveniently mislaid at birth and betrothed to their daughter. The most likely candidates are two handsome gondoliers, far more interested in parties than politics and, what's more, just married! It takes the help of the nursemaid to unravel the knots in this particularly twisty tale.

David Hobson: Marco Palmieri, a Gondolier
Roger Lemke: Giuseppe Palmieri, a Gondolier
Suzanne Johnston: Tessa, a Peasant Girl
Christine Douglas: Gianetta, a Peasant Girl
Robert Gard: Duke of Plaza-Toro
Graeme Ewer: Duchess of Plaza-Toro
Fiona Maconaghie: Casilda, their daughter
Martin Croft: Luiz, their attendant
Dennis Olsen: Don Alhambra, The Grand Inquisitor
Jennifer Bermingham: Inez, the King¹s Foster Mother

Opera Australia. Conductor: Dobbs Franks Director/Choreographer: Brian MacDonald. With The Australian Opera Chorus, The Elizabethan Philharmonic Orchestra

"The Australian Opera has prepared a stylish and exhilarating Gondoliers; it also offers many opportunities for biting humor and the release of unbridled energy" The Australian

"Costumes are dazzling; the choreography is exuberant; and every member of the cast gives the impression of enjoying their roles." The Sydney Morning Herald

Sehr originelle Aufführung der Australien Opera.
Gute Aufzeichnungsqualität.
Leider für europäische DVD Player nicht geeignet, da der Ländercode 1 verwendet wurde.

For folks who want a fun, energetic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, this is a winner, but not so much for serious devotees of the D'Orly Carte tradition. The Aussies can certainly sing, dance, and act with skill and charm. Very good stage business, I loved the boat scene "We'll never never never go to sea again", (It can almost make you feel at sea) Here's another gem by Canadian choreographer Brian MacDonald. He did the Dance the Cachuca scene with rag dolls doubling as dancers, very high energy! I think Dennis Olsen was inspired as the lecherous Gran Inquisitor(!) And Graeme Ewer as the ever-so haughty Duchess of Plaza- Toro, made the role ever-so believable. This is a fun production, easy to watch many times over.

Why does anybody care to write a review on a performance which took place nearly a quarter of a century ago and has been on DVD for at least six years? Those intending to buy the disc will have done so already or will not require further comments to assist in making a decision.

Gilbert and Sullivan purists do not care for this production. Early critics felt similarly; the director had taken too many liberties with a text, suborned by reference to now half-forgotten Antipodean current affairs. However, the honourable process of subversion, much to the annoyance of Gilbert was initiated by George Grossmith and is, in my opinion, part of the G&S legacy that paradoxically keeps Gilbert' s works fresh!

The critics also panned Dennis Olsen for "taking the money" and Graeme Ewer for daring to appear as a pantomime dame. I find Olsen's performance unique; his stage presence and footwork induce me to watch him over and over again. Ewer is a marvelous cross dresser and a worthy alternative to that national treasure, Barry Humphries.

It is suggested that the magnificent, rag doll dance is a derivative version of that first performed in Stratford, Ontario. It did not stop it appearing original to me as did the extraordinary performance by Lemke singing a song whilst jumping up and down on a trampoline. The deployment of pierrots during scene changes was novel; they danced wonderfully. Whilst they performed in mime the chorus and principles sang and danced with something in excess of competence. They worked hard at curtain call to consolidate the audience's approval and finally, the way in which they said farewell to each other was touching and showed that they had truly enjoyed being in each other's company.

It is for that reason that I feel the need to write a review which I suspect few will bother to read.

Fans of Gilbert & Sullivan are in for a treat by this Opera Australia version of the operetta which is performed with all the verve and comedy that the authors intended.
From the opening sceen to the end, the cast enjoy every nunance of the script. And there are many delightfully 'stage tricks' which make this version the best that I have ever seen.
But one must turn on the sub-titles to enjoy the 'in jokes' which pepper the story.
By the British accents and mannerisms, one would think this was a British cast, but no, the Australians do enormous justice to the language, only slipping in the vernacular for the Australian jokes.
A thoroughly enjoyable piece to watch, again and again. I can not recommend it to highly.
