”キング・オブ・サーフ・ギター”、ディック・デイルのデビュー・アルバムにシングル3枚分の6曲をプラスしたCDです。1962年に発売されたこのアルバムは、元々モノラルのみのリリースでした。（翌年に疑似ステレオでもリリースされた）本CDも全てモノラルです。アルバム収録の12曲は、ディック・デイル＆デル・トーンズが、レギュラー・バンドとして出演していたカリフォルニア州バルボアにあった伝説のライブ・ハウス「ランデブー・ボールルーム」でのライヴと、スタジオでの録音で構成されています。1曲目の「サーフ・ビート」などは、まるでギター・ピックを削っているような激しいピッキングと、ほとばしる汗が想像できるような激しい演奏です。これは7の「ペパーミント・マン」とのカップリングでシングル発売されました。後に有名になる「ミザルー」は、アルバム・ヴァージョンでは「ミザルー・ツイスト」のタイトルで、4分を超える長い熱演となってます。

「レッツ・ゴー・トリッピン」はディックが有名になるきっかけとなったヒット曲。ディックによれば、ある日この曲を初めてランデブー・ボールルームで演奏した時に、「みんな、この曲のタイトルはなんて付けたらいいと思う？」
と尋ねたところ、観客たちが「LET'S GO TRIPPIN'！」と口々に叫んでストンプを踊り出したということです。

「スループ・ジョンB」は、キングストン・トリオのヒット曲。ビーチ・ボーイズのヴァージョンも有名ですね。
「ナイト・オウル」（トニー・アレン）、「ファニー・メイ」（バスター・ブラウン）、「ラヴィ・ダヴィ」（クロヴァーズ）などはR&Bのカヴァー。意外にも彼の根底にはリズム＆ブルースも根付いているようです。

ボーナス・トラック
13は、「レッツ・ゴー・トリッピン」とのカップリングで1961年にシングルで発売されたもの。

14は、9の「シェイキン・ストンプ」とのカップリングで1962年にシングルで発売されたもの。

15〜16は、1962年にシングルで発売されたもの。
映画「パルプ・フィクション」で使用されて有名になったのは、こちらのシングル・ヴァージョンです。
16は、「レッツ・ゴー・トリッピン」の二番煎じのような曲で、よく似ています。

17〜18は、1963年にシングルとして発売されたもの。18は後にキャピトルに移籍して出した「ザ・ウェッジ」という曲の原型です。

なお、ディック・デイルもサーファーで、アルバム・ジャケットでサ-フィンをしているのは彼自身です。1960年代前半当時の、南カリフォルニアのガレージ音楽文化を、現在に伝える好盤だと思います。

In 1977 my father bought me THE ROLLING STONE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL for my fourteenth birthday. (Don't look for it -- it's out of print.) The first article I read was Jim Miller's essay on The Beach Boys. At that time they were the only rock group I cared about. At one point Miller mentions in passing that "there had been surf bands, such as Dick Dale's, before the Beach Boys -- but they played a homogeneous brand of instrumental rock, crossed with rhythm and blues."

Now for thirty years I was fascinated by this sentence. Crossed with rhythm and blues? Surf rock? Really? It wasn't till I started listening to this album on You Tube that I realized how vital and energized early surf rock was, before it got too far away from the roots of rock. Everyone's heard "Misirlou" a million times. But listen to Dick Dale's covers of "Lovey Dovey" and "Fannie Mae" and you can see where he took his pull from. There's a reason his driving rock guitar had a vital energy that the Beach Boys could never capture. Even on a silly song like "Peppermint Man" there's a bump-and-grind, lubricious sexuality that's closer to Elvis Presley than Brian Wilson. It might not have been as radio friendly as the Beach Boys, but Dick Dale's sound was clearly far more powerful in live performance -- as evidenced by the way actual surfers flocked to his beach front concerts and created the "scene" that the Beach Boys later popularized with the mainstream.

Long story short: Jim Miller wrote a great essay on the Beach Boys, but there's a lot more to be said about Dick Dale!

I do not do reviews, this is my first. After reading a piece on Dick Dale I decided I wanted Surfer's Choice, that was 3 or 4 years ago. However, because it was out of print and never available from the usual sources (eg ebay or 2nd hand record shops/fairs) in any format I have had to wait until now. It has been well worth it, I find Surfer's Choice absolutely stunning. Rare for me, last night I played this CD three times in a row. And listening to this album you can hear why Dick Dale has been called the father of surf music and how his style of playing has influenced with several artists (Hendrix for one). I am not going to describe it critically, you can do that on All Music Guide, all I am going to say is that for me there is so much I like about this album: the rythmn, the pace. In fact I am wondering if this will be my best buy this year: probably not but a nice thought.

Even though I grew up in San Diego and spent a lot of time in the ocean, I never heard of Dick Dale or any of his music until much later in life. To me, surf music was always The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and like sounds. Ironically it was some of the music of Oklahoman Junior Brown that showed me the possibilities inherent in the genre. Then my sister gave me a CD of Gary Hoey's music and I decided to explore the style further. That exploration naturally led to surf rock pioneer Dick Dale and I settled on this album after reading a strongly positive review in an English music magazine to which I subscribe.
When I first listened to Surfer's Choice, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't all what I'd call surf music, but after listening a couple more times I came to like it quite well. Only twelve of the eighteen songs are what I would call "surf" music, the rest are either blues-tinged rock or doo-wop.
My favorites are all instrumentals, I really was a little disappointed that the entire album wasn't instrumental. As another reviewer said, the best and most interesting cut is Miserlou Twist (both versions) which features shredding guitar and exhibits Spanish/Mediterranean musical influences. I also really enjoy Surfing Drums, Death of a Gremmie, and two of the bonus cuts Del-Tone Rock and A Run For Life. Those who are into late fifties/early sixties music should like the yakety-sax which prominently figures in quite a few songs.
Be sure to read the interesting liner notes that carry Dick Dale's commentary on his music, his influences, and how it was starting out. Very enlightening indeed!
When you take into account when this music was first released, it is clear that Dick Dale was ahead of his time. Sundazed Records has embarked on a project to bring obscure old surf music back to the masses. Surfer's Choice is a worthwhile reissue that should find a place in the collection of any connoisseur of the genre.
