The Destroyed Room is a rarities album that truly lives up to the label, not just settling on a few radio edits and soundtrack cuts, but gathering songs from the band's recent back catalog that are genuinely hard to find: "Campfire" from the Grand Royal At Home with the Groovebox collection; "Razor Blade," a B-side to the "Bull in the Heather" single; and several cuts from the Noho Furniture Sessions, including the intriguingly titled "Three Part Sectional Love Seat" and "Queen Anne Chair." このアルバムは、1994年から2004年までの激レア音源等（？）を集めた編集盤です。
どんな内容の曲が収録されているか、わかる範囲で書いてみようと思います。

1. Fire Engine Dream
「Sonic Nurse」（2004年）のアウトテイクで、約10分のinstです。
2. Fauxhemians
ソニック・ユースが手がけたコンピレーションアルバム「All Tomorrow's Parties 1.1」(2002年)の1曲目です。このアルバムには、ペイヴメントのStephen Malkmusやステレオラブの楽曲なども収録されています。
3. Razor Blade
1994年に発表されたシングル「Bull In The Heather」のB面で、約1分しかないアコギの牧歌的な楽曲で、キム・ゴードンが歌っています。
4. Blink
1999年に公開された映画「ポーラ X」のサントラに収録されており、キムが歌っていますが、おどろおどろしい感じがします（映画もそうなのかな？）。
5. Campfire
宅録コンピレーション「At Home with The Groovebox」(2001年)に収録されています。他には、ベック、ペイヴメント、ショーン・レノン、ビス、チボ・マットなどの楽曲が収録されています。
6. Loop Cat
誰かの（笑）トリビュートアルバム「You Can Never Go fast Enough」(2003年)に収録されています。
7. Kim's Chords
国内盤「ソニック・ナース」（2004年）のボーナストラック。
8. Beautiful Plateau
国内盤「ソニック・ナース」（2004年）のボーナストラック。
9. Three Part Sectional Love Seat

En principio creia que se trataba del tipico disco de restos de grabaciones pero no es así. Es un disco magnifico para entender la trayectoria de SY y sobre todo su filosofía. Tiene temas magníficos y recorre casi toda su carrera. Mas que recomendable es necesario si deseas enterarte de lo que significa el sonido Sonic Youth.

Well, this is one cool album of 11 b-sides and rarities, most of which are instrumental. It's 77 minutes long, 1/3 of that being taken up by a 25 minute-long version of "The Diamond Sea" (which is incredible - you can never have too much Diamond Sea). The opening track "Fire Engine Dream [#]", a Sonic Nurse sessions out-take, has a cool driving beat, and no matter what dissonance enters the picture, it really just gloms and gloms!! "Fauxhemians" comes from All Tomorrow's Parties 1.1, and it's a funky jazzy breakdown. Nice bass solo! "Razor Blade" is a cool short song by Kim, an outtake from the Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star sessions. "Blink" is a cool thing that Kim sang for the Pola X soundtrack, with weird mellow accompaniment. It sounds like something that they recorded on one of their major CD releases, not sure which song… "Campfire" has a lot of cool sounds, some of which sound like bottle rockets going up in the air. A geeky number. "Loop Cat" is a whole bunch of weird loopy sounds - weird, weird weird… and highly experimental throughout. "Kim's Chords" is a funky instrumental that snakes out and has fun. Very nice indeed, so nice that it became a bonus track for the Japanese edition of Sonic Nurse. "Beautiful Plateau" is a bit noisier, with a lot of great wild edge, growing spastic and over-the-top!! Another Sonic Nurse bonus track. "Three-Part Sectional Love Seat [#]" sort of wanders on pretentiously. Nice track, though, a minor release thing, it goes one and on, often shuffling, and sometimes just noise-ing. Fades right out. Great! "Queen Anne Chair" is pretty funky and it gloms along nicely. All the parts come in at the "2-3-4". The interplay is fantastic, and the musicians fix together quite wonderfully. Love it!!

The final track is 25 minutes of Diamond Sea/heaven. Worth the price of admission alone, even if just to hear Thurston say the words "blood crystallize to sand". Great progressions, wonderful noise - love it dearly!!!!!

The booklet is nice, with a gorgeous picture of a destroyed room on the cover, and every page after that devoted to two songs on the album, with a close-up of some part of the album cover (not sure if they have any connection to the songs or not, or if they're just random).

This is a fine companion disc to the great recent albums Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped. Its mostly guitarscapes, compelling and weirdly beautiful, with the great Kim Gordon vocal track Blink. Essential for Sonic Youth fans and probably a great way to discover the group. I particularly like Fire Engine Dream and Blink, but the whole disc is rewarding.

Die amerikanische Band Sonic Youth hat mittlerweile einen guten Kompromiß für sich gefunden,musikalisch Kunst und Kommerz zu vereinen: Auf einem Majorlabel erscheinen ihre etwas "kommerzieller" angehauchten,eingängerigen Songs,während die sperrigeren Sachen in Eigenregie unter dem Sonic Youth-Label erscheinen. Diese Platte gehört zu letzteren Veröffentlichungen und eigenet sich vor allem für harte Fans. Hier veröffentlichen sie 11 Songs mit einer Laufzeit von 77 Minuten,die man durchaus als "Songs zweiter Wahl" bezeichnen kann. Hammerstücke wie "Goo","100 %" oder "Teen Age Riot" finden sich nicht. Alle Songs sind ziemlich ruhig mit oft laaaangen Instrumentalpassagen und nicht gerade melodiebetont. Bereits der über 10-minütige Instrumentalopener gibt hier die Richtung vor. Stück 11 ist sogar 25:45 Minuten lang(aber nicht ganz instrumental). Dazwischen dann etliche auch kürzere Stücke,alle ganz nett,aber nichts,was einen sofort mitreißt. Das Material entstand zwischen 1994 und 2003 und enthält zu jedem der Songs ein Statement der Band.
