『Get closer』『Bright Future』打ち込みありの都会的新感覚、『Stop what you're doing』オールド感、いかにもジャミロ的『Pusherman』と非常にカラフルな作りです。

So good today
Nothing else
get silly
hang around
pusherman
get closer
Mein Geheimtipp ist ganz klar taken away from.

Jamiroquai fans, listen up. This is your next favorite album, from the UK's Ben Westbeech.
The title track is a microcosm of some of the basic weaknesses of the whole, but those aren't nearly enough to outweigh the gold Westbeech casts into this debut offering.
After finishing the album, one wonders how a guy like Westbeech languishes in obscurity while Jamiroquai (of whom I'm a mad fan) enjoys worldwide fame. You start to doubt that it is really as good as you think. Then, you notice, Stevie Wonder actually worked with him on one of the songs and you realize, okay, yeah, the kid is as talented as he sounds...it's just one of those things.
As to the album's troubles, variety within the songs is lacking. Even though his grooves can easily hang with Jamiroquai's (tho here they can get a smidge more jazz than funk/disco, which is just fine by me), and you're tempted to think it's Jay Kay singing (in fact, you might swear this was an early album of Jam's if you didn't know better), the tunes just don't make many imaginative, contrasting detours.
The sameness of each of the songs with each other is no flaw, as it gives the album cohesiveness and, for those who end up digging it, keeps you on the trip it promises.
You get the idea of Westbeech's limited musical scope from the opening title track, though the rest of the album has far catchier ideas, as it was apparently designed. What it lacks in scope, however, it easily compensates for with sweet funky rhythms, orchestrations, vocals, and snazzy motifs.
Particular faves:
- Get Silly (the track co-written with Stevie Wonder) is a yummy funk-groove with classic Wonder electric piano.
- Dance With Me: aptly titled, the track that makes me most want to get up and move
- Get Closer: great piano motif, textured vocals, a good choice to bring the words of the title into reality with your sweetie
- Hang Around: a track you listen to sitting on a front porch at twilight with your honey
One can fairly criticize it for being repetitive, but the ideas are so fine and catchy that it's just as fair to insist that that doesn't matter.
