60 original instrumentals are included in this 2 CD set- some of them are weird, but they’re all curiously fun!
As many of you know, it was 'Telstar' by The Tornados which is the most successful of Meek's records that he produced way back in 1962. This features in this set in a rare stereo form. In addition to 'Telstar', there are 8 more tracks by the group with some of their hits and other rare versions of their songs previously unreleased. For example, the hits you're getting 'Robot' and 'Dragonfly' whereas the rare versions are an undubbed version of their 1964 record 'Exodus' and a German version of 'Life On Venus'. It is also interesting to note that the track by the 'Unknown' group on disc 2 has been suggested that this IS The Tornados and has sometimes been called 'Dick Turpin' as well as 'The Phantom Hussar' (as it has been listed on this album), although many have doubts.
In addition to these recordings by The Tornados, there are some other cool tracks by other popular bands associated with Joe Meek, such as The Moontrekkers, who are more known for the fact that their record 'Night Of The Vampire' was banned by the BBC in the early 1960's. The Flee-Rakkers and The Outlaws also fit into this category of the bigger bands of this compilation producing some stompin', rockin' numbers.
Then, there are a host of small(er) bands which are the most curious of them all in this compilation; judging by the tracks on this compilation album, they clearly had hit records in them but with no such luck. Highlights of these bands include Roger LaVern & The Microns (RIP Roger LaVern), The Saxons, Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers and The Thunderbolts are all that would fit into this category.
Sure, some of the recordings on this album might not be to everybody's taste. Some of them are a bit odd, but they all go on to prove to everybody that Joe Meek was way ahead of his time.
To summarise, I'd recommend this album. Having said that, if you’re unfamiliar with Joe Meek and you want to have an album that you want to start off with and become familiar with his music, this album won’t be for you. However, if you’re a big fan of Joe Meek productions, this set would be a perfect addition to your collection as it mixes hits and a lot of rarities into a cool 2 CD set. Also features a nice fold out booklet with some nice pictures and information about the bands.
