Arcangelo Corelli' fame as both violinist and composer was widespread throughout seventeenth century Europe. His surviving works are relatively few in number but farreaching in influence, both in terms of performance practice and compositional technique.
This is the second set of Violin Sonatas put out by Naxos. The first 6 received high marks as well and I would recommend both to complete this set. Corelli's sonatas are beautiful and finely played on this recording. This music can be listened to at any time. I have no other recordings of these sonatas but at this low price, why bother with any other? These are quite satisfying.

Arcangelo Corelli set the tone for many of his later fellow Boroque composers, including JS Bach. While he may be more obscure than Handel and JS Bach he is clearly a composer of great ability.
Corelli's music is perfectly balanced and undeniably elegant. While he is early in the Baorque era (1653 - 1713) his music sounds fresh and accomplished. His best qualities are to the fore in the Sonatas he wrote for Violin and Harpsichord. The fast movements are feisty and dance-like in character while the slower movements include some beautiful minor key adagios.
In many ways this set bears similarity to JS Bachs Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord - arguably some of his finest work. One wonders whether Bach was inspired in part by Corelli. The main difference in approach being the enhanced role that Bach gives to the Harpsichord which plays two simultaneous parts, at times dominating the musical proceedings. Corelli is imaginative in his harpsichord parts too and gets good use from the instrument but it is really the Violin which carries the weight. The keyboard acts more as accompaniment.
I highly recommend this set whcih is well played and produced. You will find Corelli to be amongst the most elegant and eloquent of Composers as well as an important progenitor of the Baroque era.
Tout amateur de violon Italien , et de Corelli en particulier , devrait commencer par écouter l'opus 5 N° 8 sur ce CD . Il saura immediatement ou il faut classer cette interpretation dans la (nombreuse) discographie ; eh haut!!
