I knew Monoral by the song "Kiri" chosen as opening of the anime "Ergo proxy". I was curious about the style and the sound of the band so I decided to buy the whole album. It's really a great album, powerful and I didn't regret my choice.
I'm not what you would call a pretentious music history major or industry spin doctor... so I have few big words to use here to describe the album.
I bought the CD on the strength of one song alone, Kiri, from the Ergo Proxy soundtrack. I like that track a great deal. I generally consider a CD a good purchase when there is at least, more then one track on the CD that I like.
I was pleasantly surprised with the CD, on the rare occassion that I liked more then one track on it. I was also surprised that for a Japanese band that all the tracks are in english, not so surprising with Monoral's background and the fact that Ali and Anis met on MTV Japan as VJ's.
The album has a decent rolling energy to it, the music and Anis' vocals are driving, but not hard. I think these guys have a musical sophistication that you just do not see in too many new bands. The music is definitely more polished and kick'in then most new bands. The music tends to be a bit melancholy (at least I think) from time to time.
At least for me, it was an excellent purchase... if you buy it for Kiri, you will love it later for other reasons, almost guarenteed. The track, Perfect Gold is kick'in and honestly, despite that the title track, Turbulence is very short and completely instrumental, I wish it had been longer.
Sparta, Vimana, Tuesday and Session 9 also stand out.
So if you are on the fence, buy it, you will like it, if you are already a Monoral fan, you won't be disappointed either.
One thing I would improve upon, it would have been nice to have the lyrics packaged with the CD.
