Very experimental stuff on this live album, full of chanting, gongs chiming out and people wailing in ecstacy. Amidst all that theres some good music music, which in typical Pharoah Sanders fashion starts with a simple piano hook and is vamped on until they reach a storming crescendo of sound. But maybe, there isn't enough of that of this cd though ...
Beautifully presented album, though, but there must be a better Pharoah Sanders live album out there.

Twenty three or 24 years ago I heard "Healing Song" played on a college radio station in Moscow, ID. of all places. I had been taping the broadcast because the DJ played a wonderfully eclectic blend of obscure music from the fringes of the Jazz genre. "Healing Song", the first cut on this ramastered CD, is for me, the finest recording of Pharoah Sanders' early post-Coltrane period. It is a gem...and aptly named. Sanders's tenor opens with a strong individual proclamation. That voice plunges head-on into a cacophany of percussion, bass (Cecil McBee and Stanley Clarke!) flute, trumpet and voices that range from frenetic, free improvisation, to reaching an exultant resolution of the highest order...and we, the listeners, are carried along on this healing journey. The contribution of pianist Joseph Bonner, who worked with Sanders from time to time into the 1980's, deserves special mention here. He is listed as co-composer, and his ringing keyboards are the perfect match for the ensemble sound achieved here. This music is not for everyone, but Sanders fans will find resolution and fullfullment with this important live recording (1971-72?). I only wish the liner notes were in English (as well as the Japanese)....But that's alright...the music speak for itself, and I've been waiting over two decades to get my hands on this recording!!!!!
The East, an historic Cultural institution in Brooklyn NY, where Pharoah appeared frequently and the place where this concert was recorded was my main reson for purchasing it. I was disappointed that the notes were in Japanese, if those were liner notes. I may have the original LP but my collection is in storage. I was probably there the night of the concert as I was a part of the East family however that was decades ago. If anyone has the liner notes please contact me. Of course I'm glad to have the cd anyway as it takes me back to a time and place that hold precious memories. Toni, ctb1939@yahoo.com
Track #1 "The Healing Song" is by far Pharoah's best. EVER. The melody is hypnotic, the energy is overwhelming. Better even than "Creator", which to his fans is blasphemous. Check out the bass work of Cecil McBee and a very young Stanley Clarke. EXCELLENT! Must buy for all fans of this genre. I was recently made aware that "Live at the East" was actually not recorded live on location (because it would be too expensive)but the East "family" was relocated to a studio for a "Live" effect. Still a FANTASTIC recording.
