don cherryがデンマークの名門クラブ：cafe montmartreで行ったライブ音源をespが発掘したもの。録音は６６年。メンバーも主に欧州系を配する。

本盤は以前にも公表されていた由だが、このesp盤が決定打だろう。テープの状態はけっしてよくない。音質に少々難があるが、各楽器の音が聴き分けられないほどひどくない。音源の希少性と歴史的資料的価値を鑑みれば、十分だと思う。

…私は本盤を購入して以来たびたび聴いていますが、いつもこのアンサンブルに驚いている。取り上げられているのは名曲“黒いオルフェ”“春は此処に”など、よく知られたものも含まれる。これをcherryが…、と興味深々でした。

当然、原曲を“オーソドックスなバップのフォームに即して”やってなどいない。各々の演奏家が順繰りソロを入れていくのだが、所々にそれを遮るようにブレイクを入れる。それによってソロが断ち切られたりもしている。錯綜した組曲的なコンポジションと各人のソロ〜及び集団即興(collective improvisation)の要素が１曲の中に混在する(！)…という、驚くべきアンサンブルを練り上げている。こうした試みは６６年にあってornette…というより、寧ろgeorge russellのアプローチに接近したものだろう。

(追記：クレジットでは全曲がcherryのペンとなっている。上記スタンダードにしても何処にも原曲の痕跡が無い…というのがライナー執筆者の言である。が、何れにせよこの２曲をスタンダートかcherryのペンか…を断言出来ないのではないか、と私は思う。本盤におけるcherryのコンポジションは、無数の既成曲からの引用/変形を随所に散りばめられてあるきわめて変則的なものだからだ。)

karl bergerはornetteのラインをヴァイブに翻訳している。ヴァイブ特有のソノリティを活かしつつ、である。gato barbieriはayler/shepp系の咆哮で激烈。後のムード歌謡路線の“クサさ”は皆無の時期なので非常に頼もしい。cherryはここで主に統率役に回っているのだが、ソロにornette臭は最早無い時期。

frank zappaの、例えば“ロキシー＆エルスウェア”辺りのファンにこそ聴いて欲しい。ぶっ飛ぶと思いますよ！

詳細に(ディスク 2 Bonus Material DVD)と表記されていたのでDVDがついているのかと思いましたが付いていませんでした。

最初からディスクは1枚だと思うのですが何故この様な表記になっているのか分かりません。

　ＥＳＰのほぼすべてのアーティストの紹介文と２曲程度のサンプル曲がはいった12時間（！）のＤＶＤがついている。これだけで買いでしょう。

This live 1966 album was recorded at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen shortly after Don Cherry's debut for BLUE NOTE, 'Complete Communion' and a few months before his second, 'Symphony for Improvisers'. The free flowing improvising from this multinational quintet is uncommonly fiery and emotional with particularly intense playing from tenorist Gato Barbieri and Don Cherry on pocket trumpet. In some ways this exhilarating CD could be described as the missing link between Cherry's two BLUE NOTE classics and should be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates passionate and high energy free jazz.
Also included with this CD is a fascinating 12-hour DVD with audio selections from 119 ESP albums spanning 40 years. "You Never Heard Such Sounds In Your Life!"
