"This supremely gifted, charming and darkly funny New York oddball has all the makings of the first great singer/songwriter of the young century," hailed the Washington Post, in response to the epic release GET AWAY FROM ME, a record that secured performer, songwriter and activist Nellie McKay's place in history as the first female musician to ever debut with a double album. Nellie returns with OBLIGATORY VILLAGERS 9-song odyssey and follow-up to PRETTY LITTLE HEAD, on the best-reviewed records of 2006.
Die Musik von Nellie MyKay ist extrem vielfältig, immer überraschend, nie langweilig oder mainstream. Erstaunlich nur dass sie nicht kreieren Erfolg hat.
5つ星のうち5.0Maybe her least known album, and arguably her best.

In many ways my favorite Nellie McKay album, I think because of the collaborative energy and variety of styles. And Bob Dorough! I recently saw Nellie at the Deer Point Inn in Delaware Water Gap, PA, in an area I believe she spent a lot time in over the years. This album felt like a weird loose and joyous homecoming in some way.

I contacted Nellie's publicist about the differences between the explicit and clean versions of this disc, and was told that the clean version contains three edits in which swear words were replaced by animal sounds--and that Nellie herself likes the clean version.
In light of Nellie's love for animals and her keen sense of humor, this may be one case where the clean version may be a truer representation of the artist.
Yes, I like the disc too, my only reservation being its short length. This is one talented, clever, original artist. But I'll stand aside and let others comment on the musical merits.
5つ星のうち5.0Great, catchy, music and lyrics, which will stick in your head.

I originally bought this CD after hearing Nellie McKay on Garrison Kiellor’s radio program. Then I lost it when I traded in a car and later realized the CD was left in the car. So this purchase was a replacement. Nellie composes all the music and, even though some language is rough, the music is impressive.
This album packs a lot into barely a half-hour of music.I see now that Nellie McKay is way more than just a pretty gal with a ukelele and a retro jazz-age vocal style. She sings her own difficult melodies with ease and verve, plays several instruments, arranges like a seasoned pro and writes witty, gnarly, rapid-fire lyrics that surprise and delight, with nuggets of profundity embedded in all that ore of irony. This ambitious multimedia project is impressive indeed.
