ゴンサロルバルカバと言えば、デビュー当時の早弾きラテン調の人という印象が強烈で、数作品買った記憶がありますが、途中で"なんだか？？？"な感じがしてきて、追いかけるのをやめちゃいました。
10年くらい前の話でしょうかねぇ。"The Trio"は持ってる気がするので..

なので、普通では買おうとも思わない、チェックすらしない人になっているのですが、先日の新譜試聴会で聴かせてもらったら、これがなんだか良い感じに響いてまして、早速購入してきたという次第であります。

メンツは、以下の通り、新しいゴンサロのグループらしいです。
Gonzalo Rubalcaba(P)、Yosvany Terry(Sax)、Michael Rodriguez(Tp,Flh)、Matt Brewer(B)、Marcus Gilmore(Ds)

演奏曲は、以下の７曲。３曲目がhorace silver、７曲目がクラシックですかねぇ　よくわかりません。残りがメンバーのオリジナル
と言うことになります。

3 Aspiring To Normalcy
4 Peace
5 Hip Side
6 Infantil (dedicated to John McLaughlin)
7 Preludio Corto No.2 For Piano (Tu amor era falso)

さて、演奏ですが、新譜試聴会でもそう思ったのですが、全然ラテン色なんて感じません。
超絶的な早弾きすらも披露していません。
いわゆる現代のＮＹの最前線的なＪＡＺＺというくくりになると思うのですが、モーダルな曲を２管の
アンサンブルの４ビートで演っていて、ちょっとシリアスめな響きを持っていて、さらに多少フリーフレーバーをまぶして・・・。という感じで、すっごく乱暴に言えば、60年代のBLUENOTE盤のような感じもしますかねぇ..。
さすがに現代の演奏なので、ただただ当時の回顧をしているって感じには全然なっていませんけど・・・
なかなかに、格好良い演奏をしています。

で、ですねぇ、部分的にですけど、なんとなく"DUB SEXTET"(菊地さんのバンドっすね)に似てる感じを受けるんですよね..
ちなみに、こちらは、電気音は含まれません(笑)

最近、かの国でもこういうのが流行ってきているってことなんでしょうかねぇ..
Gonzalo Rubalcabaも、完全に米国(ＮＹ)に同化してしまったんだなぁと、変な感慨を持ってしまったのでありました。

This is one of the very best recent releases I've heard in the past year. I admire everything from Gonzalo, but some of it's hard work for me. This one is fun, in addition to being impressive. It's got the kind of fire that I loved in Hubbard's best playing. It reminds me in places of the kind of post-bop/hard bop/progressive jazz Herbie Hancock was doing on Blue Note in the 60s and more recently on his live album with Hargrove and Brecker. But to me it sounds even better than that. The rhythms are complex, but the beat is very strong, super funky on some tunes. There's less Cuban nostalgia here, more jazz modernism. And it's great to hear Gonzalo with an excellent horn section. The trumpet player reminds me in places of Hargrove, and the alto player reminds me in places of Garrett. But they do not sound like imitators. Not at all. They sound like masters. If anyone were to ask me for an example of the best that jazz has to offer I'd be happy to offer this one.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba's latest album is a gem. No need to discuss here Rubalcaba's immense mastery of his instrument. The man is a renowned virtuoso who has proved his great love, understanding and respect for jazz music in his past albums.
Yet in my opinion we have here his best release ever. His clever approach to harmony really shines here. There is a great playfulness and inventiveness in his interpretation that is simply stunning. The impressive quintet (trio + trumpet and sax) presents us with incredibly groovy and swinging tunes which become a perfect vehicle for Rubalcaba's soaring piano skills. Three of the compositions are by saxophone Yosvany Terry who manages to perfectly blend a funky approach with a more traditionnal jazz feel. This sets the tone for the entire album. Rubalcaba's own composition and arrangements make sublime use of the sonic capacity of the quintet. 'Infantil', which is dedicated to John McLaughlin, is simply stunning. I highly recommend this album to any jazz fan. Indeed, while remaining firmly rooted to a certain jazz tradition the album manages to be creative and completely fresh.

The most impressive factor in AVATAR is the superb playing from all the young musicians ,pianist GONZALVO RUBALCABA uses here .Special mention to bassist MATT BREWER and drummer MARCUS GILLMORE promising much more in the future.A very interesting MODERN JAZZ recording ,full of energy rythm ,strength, and robustness .

Une fois n'est pas coutume : ce disque du pianiste cubain  Gonzalo Rubalcaba  est de mon point de vue largement supérieur à tout ce qu'il a pu enregistrer ces dix dernières années (ses derniers disques en solo notamment). Toutes les qualités d'un jazz contemporain sont réunies, plus nettes encore, et majorées d'une série d'éléments carrément originaux : d'abord au niveau des arrangements, l'on ressent tout un travail d'orfèvre (écoutez l'introduction modale sur "Looking in Retrospective"). Pas de latin jazz (1) par ici mais un travail d'écriture qu'un  Wayne Shorter  n'aurait pas renié. Ensuite, l'effet de surprise au niveau du jeu et des ruptures de tempo. Pas de flot de notes pour montrer une supériorité technique comme il nous l'avait tant de fois démontré par le passé. Ici, les notes ont du sens ("Infantil", "This is It"). Il y a aussi du suspense et du mystère au détour d'un phrasé, d'une mesure, d'un contrepoint. Les arrangements sont à la fois délicats et nerveux, ça laisse à la fois rêveur et éveillé! Jamais on ne s'ennuie avec cette musique-là. "Avatar", sorti sous le label Blue Note en 2008, est donc une très grande réussite. Pas forcément facile lors d'une première écoute, le disque gagne néanmoins en maturité au fil du temps. Une bonne cuvée en somme.

Dès les premiers thèmes, on est en terrain connu : du hard-bop (ou néo-bop) aux contours aléatoires mais très identifiables ("Looking in retrospective", "This is it"). En terme de composition (j'ai parfois trouvé une influence classique du côté de chez  Ravel  ou encore  Debussy ), c'est de l'orfèvre (les compositions sont vraiment inoubliables). Le pianiste a par ailleurs le mérite d'apporter des couleurs et des arômes très subtils ("Preludio N°2 for concerto"). A l'heure où j'écris ces quelques lignes, je l'ai ressorti de derrière les fagots, et je dois dire que je suis très, très agréablement surpris par les résultats. Entouré de Yosvany Terry (magnifique au saxophone alto comme au saxophone soprano, ses idées "orientales" sur "This is It" font merveilles). Mike Rodriguez possède des sonorités lumineuses quand il embouche sa trompette, et Matt Brewer (toujours efficace à la contrebasse) est d'un soutien indéfectible. Quant au batteur, il s'agit de Marcus Gilmore (actuellement en tournée aux côtés du pianiste Vijay Iyer). Rubalcaba grave ainsi un disque moins schématique que ses précédents enregistrements, insistant davantage sur l'ambivalence du jazz (suspendu et nerveux, imprévisible et rythmiquement marqué). Le dernier thème est un tour de force incroyable. Ou quand le hard-bop se dépasse pour devenir un jazz contemporain de très, très grande qualité. 4 étoiles pour un grand disque !
