If you’ve never heard Stephen Malkmus, you might want to begin with one of the more accessible of his four solo albums, be it the self-titled debut or 2005’s watertight Face the Truth. But if you’re familiar with his individual work or that of his former band, Pavement, Real Emotional Trash will settle right in as the next chapter of the eccentric Portlander’s prolificacy. Leading the Jicks this time is ex-Sleater-Kinney drummer (and backing vocalist) Janet Weiss, who--while she never lets loose to pound her skins to oblivion--does manage to reel in the band on extended jams like that of the intricate "Elmo Delmo," a bluesy murder yarn called "Hopscotch Willie," or the sprawling 10-minute title track. Malkmus’s guitar fixation tends to overshadow his roguish, pop-sharp song craft this time around, with fewer catchy choruses and more axe-driven bypasses, save for the peculiar "Cold Son" and the joyful live-show staple "Gardenia." Then again, Trash's capriciousness and experimental willingness are what gave Malkmus an audience in the first place--and what promise to keep it coming back for more. --Scott Holter

I love this record. There's immense pop sensibilities in songs like Gardenia and Baltimore, and the hot-cold, dread-metal-then-sweet Dragonfly Pie is a great album opener. Besides the Dylan-esqe near-ballad We Can't Help You, you have longer, often nuanced tracks Hopscotch Willie and Real Emotional Trash. It finishes with the deeply satisfying Wicked Wanda. My favorite Malkmus solo effort thus far.

Real Emotional Trash possesses a cool cover with a tiny yellow bird, which, although tiny, always reminds me of Big Bird and my childhood watching Sesame Street. There begins Malkmus & the Jicks' lo-fi perspective on the classic rock of the 70s. At its very heart the album contains a perfect triplet of songs.

Cold Son says everything you need to know about Malkmus's genius with a lyric, when he just throws away the line, table bottom gum just holding it together, and in doing so instantly summons up a universal feeling.

Real Emotional Trash narrates, over a ten minute guitar masterclass, a mid-life crisis induced, Kerouac inspired, road-trip in which you cycle through a gentle dinner date with the wife before lurching wildly into to a breakneck drive south of the border prior to pulling up on your driveway with only your bed and a long lie in on your mind.

Out of Reaches is my favourite song by Malkmus for so many reasons, but mainly because of the way he marries the words the voltage was the best thing that I ever knew to a perfect fuzzed-out, trembling guitar line evoking the tragedy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

A guitar album to cherish with lots of psych twists

I love Steve Malkmus & Pavement. I am a huge fan, and have been for twenty years now.

SM's solo career (with the Jicks) started in a mellow vein, but has developed in an interesting manner. No longer tied to a group of sometimes laddish beer-drinking guys in their 20s, he is free to be the muso he always secretly was.

This album is hands down his best work, either with Pavement or not. Great band, great set of songs, great performances, great emotional range. More complex than the earlier solo albums, less afraid to rock out. But always with fantastic songwriting and amazing style.

It has become my favourite album by any artist... and stayed that way. Thankyou Malkmus for this truly brilliant set of tracks. Honestly, it's right up there with Rumours, Arise Therefore and Isn't Anything!

Buy it and enjoy it.

As an aging Silver Jews/Pavement fan, I was reluctant to get on board with SM & the Jicks, but was pleasantly surprised. The songs are all catchy, sarcastic, and musically brilliant. I'll pull out the Pavement records when I'm feeling nostalgic but all of the SM & the Jicks CD's are currently on heavy rotation in my house.

Favourite album of all time (so, yes, slightly biased). Took a while to grow and then opened me up to the genius of Malkmus, especially in the form of his first four solo albums, which are all worth double what you'll pay.
It's about as much as you can achieve with a four piece band without becoming pretentious.
