This Albert Roussel disc couples two of the composer's most popular pieces, which are given authentic performances by the compatriot Orchestre de Paris under music director Christoph Eschenbach. It is the final in a successful cycle of three releases featuring the four symphonies and two ballets by the French composer. The Third Symphony, which was given its world première in Boston in 1930, is a true masterpiece and remains the most popular of Roussel's symphonic works. Le Festin de l'araignée (The Spider's Feast) was completed in 1913 and is one of Roussel's two most celebrated ballets (the other being Bacchus et Ariane, which was featured on a previous release). While there are many accounts of the symphonic fragments, this disc contains the complete ballet music. The music is energetic, melodic, original, and pictorial, and the listener can easily imagine the action accompanying the music, helped by the choreographical annotations from the original score which are contained in the track listing of this CD. The booklet contains expert liner notes written by Damien Top from the Centre International Albert Roussel in France, as well as rare photographs. Conductor Christoph Eschenbach holds a reputation as one of today's greatest champions of new and undiscovered repertoire. When recording Roussel's Second Symphony he stated publicly: "this is one of the greatest musical discoveries I've made in years." Both previous Roussel releases have contributed to the rediscovery and recent revival of the great French composer's music and have earned highest praise in the international press.

This performance bears Eschenbach's stamp, but is very stylistically appropriate for this French master composer.
I have good to excellent other performances of these pieces by Bernstein (2), Munch (3), Ansermet, Markevich. I have heard most of the others. This recording is the best, certainly from an orchestral virtuosity and recorded sound perspective.
Since I play the important Roussel piano pieces, I was honored to be given a letter from Roussel himself to composer David Diamond while studying at Juilliard, so my passion for Roussel goes back 25 years.
Eschenbach has a fine achievement. If you like Debussy, Ravel, Martinu, and Picasso- try this!
Roussel's Symphony No. 3 was commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra by its legendary conductor Serge Koussevitzky, and he led its triumphant premiere in Boston on October 24th, 1930. It is a tremendously vivacious piece, leading off with a five-note motif in a distinctive dance/march rhythm that seems to have been in Martinu's head when he composed his similarly energetic 4th Symphony in 1945. The Third Symphony moves irresistably across four movements of 24 minutes length. Surely Roussel's best known work, it is more than deserving of its popularity.
This live recording of the Third is from March 2005, almost exactly 20 years after the Dutoit/ONF recordings. The Dutoit is my reference recording, out of the gate with a breakneck pace, and I still prefer it over others I've heard, but Eschenbach's is quite fine, despite what some nattering nabobs of negativism may say. He takes it at a slower pace, and the playing is superb. The recording quality is quite good, and it is easy to forget that it's live and be surprised by the enthusiastic crowd's applause when it ends.

Also included is the ballet "Le Festin de l'araignee," (The Spider's Feast). I have no doubt that it is well played, but I don't find it particularly compelling, and I never play it when I reach for this disc. I give it three stars, and hence the overall four-star rating.
