The quest for immortality has burned in the heart of the human soul since time began on this planet of limitations. From the ancient past, the hero song of glory can be heard today if time is taken to listen to the aged wind melodies which sing about us.
The retelling of the Beowulf saga fits in with the current emphasis on legends and heroes that the current society seeks to find. This seeking, at its essential core, is discovering a link to the past, perhaps a heritage lost in the current system of K-12 or the complexity of our techno existence.
In many ways Beowulf is a tale loaded with sadness and eventuality. Fate can be a cruel taskmaster for a hero. Most heroes of ancient lore did not get the Princess in the end and live happily ever after. These epoch stories are not children's fairytales. They deal with the essentials of the human soul in conflict with good and evil.
There is an undertone of sadness for the first two acts. King Hrothgar is a tragic figure. He is introduced as a drunken king with a young wife who loathed him. The reason is revealed later on in the movie. His death is a necessity born in his youth by those decisions that a young hero foolishly made.
Beowulf's arrogance is only overshadowed by his prowess as a warrior. His boasting is a mixture of actual fact and pure fantasy. Self promotion was not a stranger to Beowulf.
He did not care for gold. His quest was glory, and thereby songs and stories of his exploits would give him the immortality which life did not afford to a human on this planet. The afterlife was a vague, uncertain realty.
Beowulf and his men walk into the story without any idea what they would be facing. To them Grendel is just another monster for heroes to dispatch to the forgotten regions where monsters go at death.
Every hero needs a companion who is a true friend. A true friend accepts the hero with all of his faults. Wiglaf is such a friend.
The fight with Grendel, a creature part human and part demon, demonstrates that even the bravest heroes are destined for disappointment. Beowulf's defeat of Grendel is a shallow victory. The receipt of the golden dragon horn from King Hrothgar was an enchanted treasure which concealed a deadly curse.
Beowulf had to face Grendel's mother, a water demon, whose beauty was only known to those who had succumbed to her carnal snares. Beowulf was a hero, but he was always a mortal man.
In act three, Beowulf must face a creature born of a moment lost in time. He realized that the curse concealed in the golden dragon horn had to end with him, or it would continue from generation to generation. In many ways the ancient hero knew when the time for his death was on the horizon.
Before he and Wiglaf rode off to face the dragon, he said to Wealthow, his queen and wife, to remember him not as a hero or king, but a man--a mortal man scarred by human weaknesses. The man, who once loved her with all of his heart, was the memory that he wanted her to hold in her arms at night, especially during the long nights to come without him.
The battle of Beowulf and the dragon is one of the best fight sequences that I have ever seen. The old warrior must call from his inward being every ounce of what the songs and stories told of him--to be the hero of the legends once more in order to save his queen and his people. He did rise to the challenge.
The ending of the hero is always an emotional journey for the viewer of these movies. You have invested your time and money into watching this presentation of these new story tellers of our age.
Beowulf rewards this investment.
The ending, as the sun sets, is one of the most insightful moments for Wiglaf. I will not say more except that everyone must face that moment sometime in life--"temptation, sadness and indecision" as my son-in-law stated as we finished the movie. My daughter did not care for the movie.
This version of the movie is not suitable for children. It is an adult tale with many adult themes. It is unrated for a definite reason.
