ビル・エヴァンスのリーダー名義だけれど、これはクラウス・オガーマンのアレンジを楽しむアルバムではないでしょうか。エヴァンス云々を抜きにすれば、極上のラウンジ・ミュージックといえるでしょう。個人的にラウンジ・ミュージックは好きなので、期待通りの作品であった。他の方のレビューを読んでいたのでエヴァンスのプレイに期待していなかったし、オガーマンのアレンジを聴きたくて購入したから。
この手のサウンドは自分にとって郷愁を感じさせるものだ。子供の頃にレコードで聴いていたわけではないが、普段の生活のなかでラウンジ・ミュージックを耳にしていたのが刷り込まれているのだろう。昭和40年代には診療所の待合室やデパート、テレビCMなどでこの手のサウンドを自然に耳にしていた。そういった点からみると子供のころの刷り込みがない若い人にはただの甘ったるい音楽に聴こえてしまうと思う。昭和40年代生まれの私はこういう音楽を聴くと子供のころに戻ったような懐かしい気分になるんだな。

メーカー(ユニバーサルジャパン)のサイト記事に誤りがある事をお知らせします。
メーカーのサイトには「13曲」収録と記載されておりますが、本CDはオリジナルレコード通り12曲しか収録されておりません。

実は、本作品と同時に録音された「北京の55日」という曲が「Twilight of Honor」というアルバム(未CD化)に収録されてますが、メーカーのサイトには「北京の55日を収録」と誤記載されております(ただし「曲数等は変更となる場合あり」との注意書きがありますが･･･)。

とてもCD化されそうにない「Twilight of Honor」から1曲が収録される！と歓喜したものですが、ぬか喜びでした。未収録の理由が今回の紙ジャケシリースがオリジナル盤を重視したのかor権利関係なのか分かりませんが、次回プレス時の収録を期待したいものです。

なお、08/03/18に発売された輸入US盤(バーコード602517613577)もボーナス曲は未収録ですが、国内盤とは比較にならない程、音が良いです。【星3】

　ビル・エバンスのリーダー作のうち、唯一（？）CD化されていなかった幻の一品が、ついに紙ジャケでそのベールを脱いだ！
　しばらく前にverve音源を集めた１８枚組にも何故か収録されず、憶測が憶測を呼び、中山康樹「エヴァンスを聴け」で散々こき下ろされても、「一度でいいから聴いてみたい」という欲望は押さえることができず…とまあ、レコード会社も、需要の機が熟した、と判断されたのでしょう。
　…で、買ってみましたが、これはこれは、想像以上というか、想像通りというか…とにかく、耳を覆いたくなるような作品です。
　誤解の無いように言っておきますが、別に、TV主題歌をやっているからダメだとか、ストリングス入ってるからダメだとか…アドリブない、BGMみたい、jazzじゃない、…そんなけちくさい理由でけなしている訳ではありません。
　私は、ポール・モーリアやジャッキー・グリースンは結構好きですが、それらとも雲泥の差、全然、ムード音楽としてもなっちゃいないんです。「緑イルカ」も、こんなヘンコチョリンな演奏、聴いたことありまへんな。
　ストリングスとピアノの音色も、なんだか気分が悪くなるほど悪い。制作者たちは、金持ちのアフターワーズのムード音楽を、「こんなもん？」と馬鹿にしくさって録音したのだろうか？
　はっきりいって、「聴く」ためにではなく、ただ単に、「所有する」というコレクターの欲望を満たすためだけにあるような１枚です。
　ですから、海賊盤も含め、ビルのリーダー／準リーダー作をすべて購入してしまったマニアのみが、手を出すべきです。
　なお、同時期の録音で、「北京の５５日」もオムニバスにはいっているようですが、どうせならそれをボーナスで加えて欲しかったところです。こんなアルバム、もう二度と買い直したくありませんから！

ワタクシ、ビルエバンスが嫌いじゃないんですよ
まぁ特別に好きとも言えませんが
一応CD２０枚くらいは持っていますよ
ジャズ聴くキッカケもビルエバンスでしたし

でも、クラウスオガーマンはもっと好きです
クラウスオガーマンは時々主役を食っちゃうことがありますが
この作品もジョビンの時と同じく誰が主役かわからないー
エバンスさんも、すっかりやる気なくして右手の人差指一本で弾いているんじゃないのっていう感じの曲もあります

真夏の暑い日の午後
エアコンの効いた部屋でトニックウォーターを飲んでいるような気がするんですよね
首筋からスーッとエアコンの涼気が忍び寄る
そんな感じのストリングス

選曲だってムード音楽の度定番モアのテーマなんかもやっちゃって
もう最高です
ワタクシ映画のほうは気持ち悪いから見ませんでしたが
最高のモアですね
オガーマンとモア奇跡の組み合わせです

唯一難をつけるなら
一応、エバンスさんが主役なのでピアノの音が粒だって聞こえるというか…
もうすこし、エバンスさんの音を小さくしてストリングスと一体にゴチャ混ぜで聞こえるような感じにしてほしかった
クラウスオガーマンの音楽はWAVEの時みたいに音質劣悪なほうが
オガーマンらしくていいです

#10はブルースなんですが
この曲を聴くと
マイケルメッサーとダイアナロスのブラウンベビーと同じく黒人音楽の洗練の極致っていう感じがします
フォークブルースから始まった黒人労働歌が洗練に洗練を重ね辿り着いた頂上という感じですね
ちなみにマイケルメッサーはホイットニーヒューストンの曲も書いていますが
オガーマンと同じくお気に入りです

上質なイージー・リスニング

多くのジャズ・ファンには不評のようですが、イージー・リスニング・ファンにとっては、良い出来のアルバムです。
特に、ＶＩＰは、間の抜けたクラシックの管弦楽風演奏のサウンド・トラックと比べると、クールな編曲・演奏を得意とするクラウス・オガーマンにはめずらしくホットでパンチがきいていて出色の出来栄えです。
どなたか別の方もコメントされてますが、このアルバムの大半の曲において、ビル・エバンスの必要性もなく、クラウス・オガーマンのアルバムともいえます。
きっと、ビル・エバンスも仕事仲間・友達（？）のよしみ、またはレコード会社の営業的思惑で、名前貸し程度に参加したのでしょう（？）。
但し、黄金の腕のクールな編曲・演奏はいただけません。この曲はその曲調よりダイナミック且つパワフルに、デビット・ローズの編曲・演奏のように演奏する必要があります。

長年ＣＤ化されていなかったのも頷ける。こりゃただのムード音楽。言われなければ、
ピアノがエヴァンスだとは分からない。ＢＧＭ用と割り切れば、それなりに聴けるけど。
まぁ、「リヴィング・タイム」よりマシ、それだけは言える。エヴァンス道上級者向け。

良いんじゃないですか

最近このタイトルを知ったのですが長らくCD化されなかったとのことで興味を持ち購入しました。期待はしていませんでしたが、これがなかなか良い個人的には悪くないです。たしかにエヴァンスの作品の中では異質ですが、視点を変えてみれば良い作品です。一曲目（Theme From Mr.Novak）で驚きますがすべてこのパターンで続くわけではなく 2.The Caretakers Theme、4.Walk On The Wild Side、7.Hollywood などジャズらしく好きです。このようなCD（映画音楽）は一枚も持っていませんがエヴァンス作品でなければ買わなかったと思います。ストリングスも綺麗で心地良い、聴いていて癒される感じです。エヴァンスの華麗なタッチの作品ももちろん好きですがこのような息抜き？のものも必要ではないでしょうか。じっくり聴くというよりもBGM的なものですが、音質も良く（曲が短いのもいいですね）しかしある意味マニア向けかもしれませんね。

Nous sommes ici devant une perle rare, étincelante, un absolu chef d'oeuvre, l'équilibre parfait entre bon goût et fantaisie. Chaque thème bénéficie d'un arrangement et d'une orchestration tels que seuls Claus Ogerman ou Burt Bacharach peuvent en offrir. La stéréophonie (violons à gauche, castagnettes à droites) vous replonge dans une nostalgie bon teint. Et l'on se régale de ces bossas swings, de ce jazz be-bop, cha-cha-chas lascifs aux cordes sirupeuses comme une vodka concombre. On y trouve l'une des plus belle version de LAURA et cerise sur le gâteau, cette reprise improbable de ON BROADWAY don ton reste baba. Pour tous les amateurs de musiques de films et de easy listening. A conseillé à tous ceux qui voudrait offrir à l'élu de leur coeur un dîner aux chandelles romantico-rétro...

For the 1963 MGM album, "Bill Evans, Piano And Orchestra, Plays The V.I.P.'s Theme And Others", it has been written
that he seriously considered using his natural Russian name for the lead credit on it. But he also stated, "As long as I
know where I'm at, know that it's commercial, I'm okay. If I didn't know, I'd be very worried! If this record could have
done something for widening my audience, getting better distribution for my other records, I'm all for it. Because it's a
cold, hard business. Now, even my jazz records, like say, "Conversations", go fine in places where you will find no other
jazz records - because of THIS record." It wouldn't be included when Verve issued their giant "Complete Bill Evans" set.
I remember seeing a comedy a while back in which a group of people in a packed elevator ran out with their hands over
their ears when the doors opened with a BLARING "McArthur Park" playing on the elevator speakers. Muzak from Hell! I
was playing "V.I.P.'s" the other day on the way to work listening to it for the first time - I literally laughed out loud, as
this music reminded me of that scene. Bill's playing on "V.I.P.'s" is not what triggered this - it's those HORRIBLE strings
by Claus Ogerman, who was uncredited for this session, but did do it. I'm a serious Bill Evans collector. I, too, have the
Complete Verve Evans 18 cd set (in that metal case), along with hundreds of his other recordings. My all-time favorite
Bill Evans item is the brilliant 1974 MPS release "Symbiosis", with Bill's trio at that time and Ogerman's orchestra, which
was composed, arranged, and conducted by Ogerman. (See my amazon review of "Symbiosis"). I'm a serious Ogerman
collector, as well - I LOVE his work. I had known "V.I.P.'s" was not included in the Complete Verve Evans box, so when
I saw that it had been issued on cd recently, I had to have it. I can fully understand now WHY it wasn't included. Okay,
there are a few tracks here that do hint at what Bill was capable of ("Hollywood", an Evans & Ogerman original, is what
saves the cd for me). This album was OBVIOUSLY not intended for serious jazz listening - 99% of what Bill Evans did in
his lifetime proved why he was a genius. This was a very brief mis-step towards the commercial, easy-listening market.
It still has value for historical and collecting purposes - it DOES complete a link that was missing (although a very weak
link). "V.I.P.'s" is a mis-step for Ogerman, as well - if he had toned down and perhaps, re-arranged his strings for a more
subtle touch, it could only have helped. For Ogerman, "The V.I.P.'s" was just another studio commission job, nothing out
of the ordinary, and he collected his $. I'm giving this a very WOBBLY 3 stars, only because it's Bill Evans and Ogerman;
they both proved countless times they had far more depth & talent than what is on "The V.I.P.'s". In 1965, they would
collaborate again on the classic Verve recording, "Bill Evans Trio With Symphony Orchestra", on which Ogerman's strings
would sing and soar with Bill's magnificent piano work, and the previously mentioned 1974 MPS masterpiece "Symbiosis".
And Creed Taylor, who produced "V.I.P.'s", should certainly share some responsibility for the final result. Alas, there are
probably people out there who actually enjoy this sort of thing (the Percy Faith, Mantovani, older professional crowd) -
to each his own. It's just not my particular cup-of-tea.

P.S. As the first reviewer noted, there was a track called "55 Days In Peking" from this same session
that was not included on "The V.I.P.'s" album, for some reason. It can be located on a soundtrack lp
from the 60's on MGM called "Twilight Of Honor" that includes other movie themes, as well. I recently
picked up a mint vinyl copy of "Twilight" just for this one tune. Surprisingly, it's a pretty decent track
with Evans offering some nice soloing and Ogerman using more imagination with his strings than what
appears on the rest of "V.I.P.'s". He also efffectively uses smooth voices along with the strings which
was one of his trademarks on so many albums. But DO NOT get the cd issue of "Twilight" from a while
back assuming this track is on it - it's not, as the "Twilight" cd soundtrack is the complete score from
that film, with no other film themes included, as on the MGM album.

As stated in another review,this is Bill Evans unashamed foray into commercial instrumental pop,circa 1963. Till buying this CD,I had only heard one track,"Sweet September". West Coast pianist Pete Jolly had a fair sized hit with this song at the same time. Jolly's interpretation of that song was a joyful,quick tempoed attack(that held up even better without strings),while Evans(and Claus Ogerman)use a leaden approach trying to channel Oliver Nelson and Jimmy Smith's "Walk On the Wild Side". Records like this were used at MOR radio in the 1960s, with a DJ grabbing the first available instrumental that fit the time leading up to news broadcasts. It didn't matter whose "Sweet September",as long as it ended on time.
The rest of the album has that movie/TV theme sound with nameless piano player and nameless arranger you would find on one of those "Living Strings" albums Ethel Gabriel churned out for RCA's budget label,Camden. What a hilarious "Blindfold Test" is would have made. Bright moments hidden between the schmalz is the lone original,"Hollywood" and the first thrity seconds of "Laura". On "Laura",you can hear Evans slowly deconstructing the melody and one hopes that it could go on longer till he found that moment of heartbreak. Unfortunately,Claus takes over from there and all is lost.
I own the "Complete Verve"recordings and have wondered why they kept this album off the box. Now I know. One wonders how this album made it to CD,especially in these mp3 days where Universal has kept many a true jazz gem only available as a download.

Let's face it, many suspect records from great artists are worth taking a chance on just because of the artist. That said, if you love Evans and you're considering buying this thing, you should know what you're getting into. Evans had a new record label with lots of opportunities, a little money to put in his pocket, and a hope to increase his audience. He also liked a challenge. Could he take the mundane world of muzak and make it into something his own? Would people really get this and then REALLY get into Conversations With Myself or Waltz for Debby ?

No, of course, they wouldn't, and in spite of a minor "hit" with the single of "September Song", Evans mostly sold this to fans who felt cheated. In the end, Evans himself and eventually his label also disowned the record. After passing over this recording for the otherwise The Complete Bill Evans On Verve , Verve finally slipped it out in 2008 to let the completists be satisfied. If you are such a person, it might be worth buying: it isn't great, but you knew that, and you'll be surprised at a few genuine gems like "Hollywood" or "The Man with the Golden Arm" (complete with noir orchestra). I feel for the person back in the sixties who grabbed this in a cheap bin to take a chance on Evans. Surely such a person would believe all the nonsensical hype about Evans lacking soul or swing, even though some of that is here, just buried under six extra tablespoons of (uncredited) Claus Ogerman TV show special saccharine orchestra. Thankfully, that conductor made a much better record on Verve with Evans, the overlooked W/Symphony Orchestra (Mini Lp Sleeve) that more than makes up for this misstep. Get that one if you really want Evans with strings. If you must have this, listen to it with a nice glass of cheap wine, put it on soft volume, and prepare to be whisked into weather channel whimsy.
