アニー期よりむしろ人気が高いレルフ兄妹期ですが、思ったよりは「プログレ」してました。
何よりピアノが素晴らしいですね。

バンドの中心軸は、ジョン・ホウクンの弾きまくる軽快な生ピアノだ。ジェーン・レルフのヴォーカルはまだまだ少ない。トラッド＆フォークやブルーズ・ロックとも違う新しい音楽をプレイしようとする意気込みは感じるが、まだカタチになっていない。従ってアルバム全体の印象はやや薄いのは否めない。彼ら独自のスタイルを味わうなら次作以降となる。

しかしこのアルバムはなかなか実験的な側面も多くて、なかなか面白い。はっきり言ってこの後の作品の方が「らしくて」好きだが、バンドの発展過程であり未熟な分だけ、個人的には忘れられない作品であります。

ジェーン・レルフがリードを取るフォーキーな２曲もバンドの伝統であり聴きどころではありますが、このアルバムの決定的なオリジナリティーは、クラシカルでサイケデリックな曲とそれを少しも野暮ったく感じさせない硬質かつ躍動的なアンサンブルにあると思います。

当時の水準を凌ぐテクニカルなルイス・セナモのベース、それに負けじと奮闘するマッカーティの立体的なドラミング。そして、何よりも聞きものなのは１曲目から疾走するジョン・ホウクンの硬質なアコースティックピアノのサウンド。クラシックを導入したバンドの殆どがオルガンをサウンドの中心に置いていたのとは対照的に、ピアノトリオ編成のサウンドは非常にタイトで時代を感じさせない魅力を感じます。

一方、線が細いといわれることの多いキース・レルフのボーカルも、実際主役とは言いがたいかもしれませんが、時代特有の大げさな歌いまわしがない分、このバンドのタイトな演奏を邪魔せず、古さを感じさせない一因になっているのではないでしょうか。

とにかく、第２期ルネッサンスの露払いとしてだけではなくもっと評価されて欲しいアルバムです。

Wonderful album. Contrary to another consumer's comments, who didn't like the 'shrink wrapping' (presumably the cardboard cover in contrast to a plastic case?), I actually like the choice I received. This is a reproduction of the original gatefold album cover, with the CD inside one half and a pull out folded page with album information on the other. Very nostalgic, as it reminds me of the very same album I borrowed from a friend all those years ago, in miniature form; though one can never do better than the vinyl, of course.
Moreover, just to add, the follow up album called Illusion, never appealed to me personally, but when I discovered singer Jane Relf in her next group which itself was named 'Illusion', I bought their album 'Out Of The Mist' and found it actually the worthier successor to the first Renaissance album. Just a personal opinion.

Si tratta del primo disco (1969) dei Renaissance, nati dalla scissione degli Yardbirds, con la leadership di Keith Relf (voce e chitarra) e Jim McCarty (voce e batteria) a cui si aggiungono il pianista john Hawken, Luis Cennamo al basso e la brava Jane Relf, sorella di Keith, alla voce. Bellissimo disco di rock progressivo, dominato da melodie neoclassicheggianti e da un pianoforte, a tratti magistrale, che ti entra nel cervello e cattura le tue emozioni. I primi Renaissance furono una avventura breve; solo un altro disco, "Illusion" (1971), meno coinvolgente del primo, ma anch'esso amabile.
Successivamente, ci sarà il cambio completo della formazione e comincerà un'altra storia....musicalmente avvincente irrinunciabile!!!

Después de la disolución de los Yardbirds en 1968 Jim McCarthy (batería) y Keith Relf ( voz, guitarras y armónica) fundaron Renaissance a principios de 1969. Se sumaron al grupo el teclista John Hawken ( ex-Nashville Teens) el bajista Louis Cinnamo y la cantante Jane Relf ( hermana de Keith).
Este es el line-up del disco que nos ocupa y que llegó al puesto 60 de las listas en UK. Luego la banda se disolvió y en los discos posteriores del grupo las formaciones fueron diferentes.
El disco no tiene que ver con los que le seguirían por los cambios seguramente, pero está a la altura de los clásicos del grupo ( "Prologue", "Ashes To Burning" o "Turn Of The Cards").
Grandes canciones, a destacar: "Kings And Queens" e "Innocence" que tienen buenas partes de piano y un gran ritmo, la preciosa "Island" donde canta Jane y que salió como single, "Wanderer" cantada de nuevo por Jane y con grandes partes de piano.
Un excelente disco que los amantes del grupo y del buen rock progresivo deberían escuchar.

Like it very much love to get the beginning of this great group. I got Armageddon with Keith Relf and Louie Cennamo not long after this came out. Some good music these guys were great musicians and singers in their own right. Look it up and do a little research.

Des morceaux longs (presque 11 minutes pour ''Kings and Queens'', au-delà pour ''Bullet''), incluant des changements de rythme, des thèmes différents se succédant au sein d'un même titre avec un retour au thème majeur, une forte imprégnation de musique classique déclinée par un pianiste hors pair à la virtuosité indéniable (John Hawken), une touche de références médiévales (''Kings and Queens''), nous sommes sans aucun doute devant une perle du rock progressif, un de ces groupes qui ont sombré dans l'anonymat injustifié, balayés par les vagues métal, grunge, disco, etc... Et pourtant, quel plaisir que de se plonger dans l'écoute de cet album, étonnant, surprenant, envoûtant! La voix céleste de Jane Relf , la clarté de celle de son frère Keith viennent ajouter un brin de sublime à la puissance des arpèges au clavier. La trajectoire des musiciens composant ce groupe est aussi étonnante. Keith Relf (guitare et harmonica) et Jim McCarty (batterie) viennent des Yardbirds, à la tendance franchement rock, et le même Keith Relf, avec le bassiste Louis Cennamo, formeront le groupe hard ''Armageddon'' ! Par bonheur, l'intermède Renaissance a livré pour la postérité cette oeuvre (leur premier album), que je vous invite fortement à découvrir toute affaire cessante (inconditionnels du rap et de la techno/electro s'abstenir !!)
