７１年発表の２ｎｄ。前作にあったゾンビーズの後裔的なサウンドに加えて、後の作品に顕著に現れて来るプログレッシヴな志向の大作４．などを含んだ作品。
１．はどこか西海岸風の雰囲気を感じさせる明るい曲。コーラス・ワークが爽快で美しく、軽快なピアノも素晴しいが、何よりも開放的な楽曲そのものが素晴しい。２．はエレピのバッキングによるジャズ/ブルース調の曲だが、従来の彼らの楽曲の中ではかなり洗練された印象を受ける。４．もブルース・ベースの曲だが、オルガンの使用頻度が高くそれらとは明らかに一線を画している。コーラス・ワークやそのオルガンの雰囲気からどうしてもユーライア・ヒープが思い浮かぶが、彼らの方が淡白でクセがない。バロック調のピアノ/オルガン・ソロなどプログレ・ファンには堪えられない仕上がりだと思う。５．はゾンビーズをクールにしたかのような曲。ブルージーな雰囲気だが、ちょっぴりのジャズ・テイストのエレピが良いさじ加減になった佳曲。６．のバロック調のオルガンもたまらん。こちらは美しいバラードの名曲だ。
楽曲そのものの出来を含めて前作と比べるとかなり垢抜けした印象があり聞き応えは十分。アージェントの最初の一枚に最適な彼らの魅力がギッシリと詰まった名作。

その昔、プログレ少年ではあったのですが、あの頃のアージェントはどちらかというとハードロック文脈だったような気がして聴いたことがありませんでした。最近すべてのアルバムを通して聴いてみたのですが、この作品は１stの、まだゾンビーズ色が抜けきらない時期の余韻と、いよいよプログレ色が出てくる過渡期という感じでいいですね。
全体に非常に聴き心地がいいのですが、つかみどころがない感触で１曲目とアナログＢ面部分とのギャップは整合性に欠けているように思えます。しかし、これから大プログレ大会に突入していく前哨としての期待感があります。
当時聴いていたらどうだったのかなと、いまさらのように悔やまれるバンドです。

アージェントの 2nd、'70 リリース。当 CD (米Collectables COL-CD-6087) は '99 年の再発です。
前作には無かった軽めの [1] から始まるアルバムですが、ひきしまった [3] が心地良いです。わずかですが、後のプログレ化の香りがします。[4] も後半でノリの良いオルガンのソロが◎です。これまた前作には無かったバラード [6]。前半はポップな曲のようで、後半、盛りに盛り上がる [7] が気に入ってます。ユルいのか気合が入っているのかわからないギターソロとパワフルなピアノソロの [9] も良いです。
全体的を通した基調はＲ＆Ｂでソロのフレーズはジャズなのですが、英国の香りはぷんぷんしてます。
ボーナストラック [10] は次作 All Together Now に収録の曲（何回聞いても同じテイク）です。わざわざ入れなくても、、、

Probably the best album put together by this group which emerged from the Zombies, with Rod Argent at the helm.
Of course, this is a matter of taste. In my case, I have a strong leaning towards hammond organ period music, and Rod Argent here excels himself, especially on the almost 8-minute track called Lothlorien (someone tell me why they gave it this strange name).
One reviewer considers it to be an irregular album. Personally I don't go along with that. The wide variety of songs actually makes for a better album, which holds one's interest, and grows on you with each listening. I only wish there were more moments comparable to Lothlorien's organ extravaganza. One of my favourite tracks is the more easy-listening Sweet Mary. Pleasure is also an excellent song. The bonus track on the (now deleted) 1999 cd that I bought is called He's a Dynamo. This strong song appears on the album All Together Now, the one which highlights Hold Your Head Up. The original album was released on Epic in 1971. Great songs by a great early seventies rock band that has been overlooked for too long. Would be a good idea to re-edit all of their albums, since they're getting hard to find. Such talent should not be forgotten.

I was probably into my third vinyl copy of "Argent" when "Ring of Hands" finally showed in local record store in 1971. Now that the Japanese remastered versions are available its reliving the pleasure all over again. To this day all of the Argent releases are still on my regular play rotation in the car, work and home. Over the past several years I've had the pleasure of meeting Rod Argent during his travels with the Zombies which makes the experience all the more exceptional. Being able to talk about certain songs and thoughts with Rod and Jim Rodford (bass player) and what they recall from the sessions just adds to the enjoyment. With the remastered CD the instruments are better defined and the vocals are crisp and right where they should be in the mix. This release was far more aggressive than the more subtle first release which signaled a trend for the future band offerings. My personal favorites are "Celebration" (listen to Rodfords bass line), "Rejoice" and "Pleasure" all Rod and Chris White songs w/Rod taking the lead vocals as well. The musicianship is superb.

My suggestion is to retire the previous releases of this CD and discover what a little TLC can do. You won't be disappointed.

Argents second lp, if you love piano music then rod argent is for you, the melody's are fantastic, as well as rod's, and russ ballards vocals.

All four of the members are quite talented, and it makes this album ear candy, it is almost as great as their first record.
