商品の説明
2008 reissue of 1996 album entitled Older by George Michael. The album produced a number of hit singles, making Michael become the first artist in UK chart history to have six top 3 singles from one album. George Michael achieved fame in the duo Wham in his native U.K. in 1982. Through 1986, he and his partner, Andrew Ridgeley, scored hit after hit in a variety of styles from Rap to up-tempo Pop to slow Ballads. As songwriter and lead singer, Michael gradually overshadowed the group, and by the time they split, he was ready for a massively successful solo career. This began with the 1987 album Faith, which featured a series of chart-topping hit singles and sold more than seven million copies.

George Michael's timeless album, 'Older', marked, for me, his artistic and career highpoint. In my younger days, I used to think that it was the almost peerless sequence of classic singles that this album contains: 'Jesus To A Child', 'Fast Love, 'Spinning The Wheel', 'Star People', and 'Older' (actually an EP), that made this album such a huge artistic and commercial success (particularly in the UK and Europe), in the weeks and months following it's initial release. However, brilliantly produced, well-written and amazingly well sung as those tracks undoubtedly are, they are, I now realize, actually just important pieces of a much richer, more complex and immensely rewarding emotional tapestry about how love, the loss of it and the wisdom that can only come with experiencing those two sharply different (yet inextricably linked) things, both molds us and gives us a true perspective on life that can only really come with the passing of the years....thus the album title, of course.
Listening to this album again, now that I am much older myself, is a fascinating experience. Firstly, there are all of the older (sorry, no pun intended there!), familiar melodies and fantastic creative flourishes that made the singles such a delight: the perfect use of Patrice Rushen's fine 'Forget Me Nots' (on 'Fast Love'); the clear GAP Band influence on 'Star People'; the jazz-influence infused brilliance of 'Spinning The Wheel' (and the underlying lyrical suspicion of the song's lead 'character') and so on. However, on top of these still impressive strengths, I can now see so many other positive aspects of this album, too, ones that I didn't, perhaps, either fully get or give due credit to George Michael, for, a quarter of a century ago. By this, I mean things like: George and his background singers' consistently pitch-perfect vocals; the spot-on track progression and craftsman-like placement of the tracks themselves; the no-stone-unturned brilliance of GM's almost otherworldly and 'borderline perfectionist' production influence/work (has an album EVER sounded sonically better and 'cleaner' as regards its' overall production, than this GM masterpiece does?!) and the gradual shift from the fairly upbeat grooves and musical hooks of tracks like the aforementioned 'Fast Love', during the first half of the album, to the rather more moody, mature (perhaps?) and introspective tone of quite a few of the tracks that we find present during the second half of 'Older', ones such as 'The Strangest Thing', and, 'You Have Been Loved'.
If you haven't previously been lucky enough to be able to listen to this album in its' entirety, then I strongly recommend it to you. However, to enjoy it at its' artistically considerable best, I also strongly recommend that you buy or stream the album in its' original track sequence, rather than simply flitting from track-to-track in no particular order (something that seems to be a growing phenomenon these days, in the digital music era that we all live in). Picking on some of the excellent individual tracks present will naturally showcase some of George Michael's true career songwriting gems to you, but only when you actually have the time and patience to REALLY listen to the entirety of 'Older', from start to finish, will its' full artistic and creative majesty truly reveal itself to you -- definitely an album best listened to on CD or vinyl, in my humble opinion!
If you have made it this far through my review, my sincere thanks for reading all of the words concerned. And thank you, too, of course, to the late-George Michael for leaving us such a truly timeless, classic album to remember him by!
Wham!
もの悲しい情感ダダ漏れの「Jesus to a child」や「The Strange thing」もいいが、軽くジャジーな「Spinning the wheel」や、キャッチーなメロディが耳に残る「Star People」もたまらない。
昔聞き流しただけの人、どうぞもう一度じっくり味わってみてください。
The eleven songs in this album are more melancholic than movingly-warm, whether a song about love, or about life . . . or a social commentary--something which (to his old record company's added chagrin), he does with equally-incisive ability.
Absolutely cool. Seven years of having this CD, and I still play it regularly, from an archive of thousands.
