Some very interesting and varied music from a talented composer. Interesting liner notes describing the interesting life of Julius Isserlis and his connection to the pre-revolution musical world of Moscow as well as history in general.

The beautiful performance by Sam Heywood (as well as an appearance by Steven Isserlis), really 'sells' this lovely and engaging music, which is reminiscent of much of the Russian piano music of the time, whilst occasionally demonstrating some zany experimentalism at the same time.

Really glad to have bought it!

Anatoly Liadov (1855-1914) didn't write a lot of music (famously because of his laziness). He was nevertheless a skilled composer of miniatures; his orchestral works are well known, of course, but there are quite a few piano pieces, and the selection offered by Stephen Coombs for Hyperion here can only make you wish that there was much more of it. Some of the music verges on the salonesque, but it is always delectably crafted and quite memorable; other works show traces of something far deeper and more serious, despite the miniature format (the op. 64 set perhaps in particular). Among the lighter music, The Musical Snuffbox is well known in its orchestral guise and is a charming and brief bagatelle in its piano version; the Little Waltz is similarly brief and delightful, whereas Marionettes is inventive and imaginative. I guess the op. 11 pieces would count as belonging not too far away from the salon as well, though they show that Liadov could emulate Chopin in a way that was almost as successful as what Chopin himself wrote.

The op. 24 pieces are somewhat more substantial, with traces of more adventurous harmonic ideas; these are thoroughly engaging and enjoyable works and would deserve to be better known. Chronologically, the op. 36 preludes followed next, but they are lighter and more conventional (but very enjoyable); the Barcarolle op.44 is relatively conventional as well, but thoroughly beautiful. With the op. 57 pieces we have what must be considered miniature masterpieces, and even more so the op. 64 are wonderful, even captivating, works of imaginative, atmospheric late romanticism.

The two sets of variations here are apparently the largest works Liadov wrote. The op. 35 set (on a theme by Glinka) does perhaps not really say anything new; it is inventive enough and contains enough twists and fine ideas to make it worth its time. It pales, however, in comparison to the op.51 set (on a Polish folk theme), which - with its glittering colors and wonderful atmospheres, especially in the faster material - is a real gem. Stephen Coombs clearly enjoys the music, and it really isn't much wonder why. He seems to have thought long about every one of these miniatures, and I can hardly imagine anyone making a much better case for them. Recommended with some enthusiasm.

This is a very attractive recording (musically) of some unjustly overlooked music. Lyadov's music doesn't usually stand out as having a unique "flavor" setting it apart from the work of other late romantic composers, though some of his music is intended to represent stories from Russian folklore.

My reason for seeking this recording was to obtain a piano recording of a piece I was actually transcribing for performance on the carillon (Berceuse), and this piece is rarely recorded. I listened with great enjoyment to the other selections. Some are more interesting than others, with the Barcarolle being a particularly interesting and lovely selection. (I ordered the music for that, and may transcribe that as well.) From my admittedly superficial listening, I didn't do so well listening with sustained interest to the two longer works on the recording, but that is no criticism of the recording itself. I would recommend it with confidence and enthusiasm.

The recorded sound, and the playing, are very fine indeed!
