In the indie electronic realm, having a way with inclusiveness—the ability to blend disparate influences—is key. And if there's one thing Koushik Ghosh can do, it’s blend. His proper full-length solo debut (2005's Be With was a collection of his EPs) dips its toes into a variety of styles; think '60s psychedelia, mellow funk, and shoegazer textures with thick sides of reverb. Somehow it all goes down like fine wine—or maybe mushroom tea. There's an altered-mind haze to it, like early Spiritualized or Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, though its ambitions are greater than that. There is sober cleverness at the heart of Koushik's songwriting. The 16 tracks on Out My Window are full of surprises like the trip-hop beat that weaves its way into "Corner of Your Smile," or the jazzy noise of "Bright and Shining." It almost feels like a concept record at times with its short interludes (many of them, like "Forest Loop," unassailably lovely) and the consistency of its blissed-out, soft-focus tone. On the heels of Be With and after having contributed a couple tracks to Manitoba's equally dreamy Up In Flames back in 2003, the excellence of Window isn't a surprise. But Koushik surpasses those already high expectations here in a warm bath of hypnotic sound. Put on the headphones and soak it in. --Matthew Cooke
