Formed in 1975 by guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins, The Nerves are on of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented until now. Mostly remembered for their classic, "Hanging on the Telephone", a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from Blondie to L7 to Cat Power, The Nerves were above all a high-energy rock 'n' roll band with all three members composing and singing. ONE WAY TICKET is a collection of the groups recordings including the band's 1976 EP, as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, re-mastered and complete with notes and photos.

Voici l'intégrale du groupe originel de 2 des prophètes de la Power Pop, Peter Case (The Plimsouls) et Paul Collins (Paul Collins (Beat)).

The Nerves, un groupe mort en couveuse qui connait aujourd'hui un petit succès posthume pour les raisons citées ci-dessus.

Quelques infos sur l'origine des titres tirées du livret et des rares infos qui circulent.

Ticket et Paper Dolls ont été enregistrés fin 77 pour le label Bomp pour ce qui devait être leur deuxième simple et qui n'est jamais sorti. Hanging On The Telephone, When You Find Out, Working Too Hard et Give Me Some Time sont les 4 titres issus de leur EP The Nerves, seul disque officiel des Nerves publié pendant la période d'existence du groupe. L'enregistrement date de l'été 76.

Walking Out Of Love, que les Nerves jouaient toujours sur scène, est une version enregistrée début 78 par Paul et Peter sous le nom des Breakaways, juste après la séparation d'avec Jack Lee (divergences d'ordre musical) et son remplacement par Harlan Hollander à la guitare.

Thing Of The Past fut écrite par Case pour les Nerves en 76 ; elle est ici interprétée par le premier line-up des Plimsouls (Dave Pahoa, basse et chant – Louie Ramirez, batterie) sur scène au Last Trio Show d'Hollywood en 79.

It's Hot Outside appartient à la même période, c'est Jack Lee accompagné par le guitariste Buzz Click et le batteur Brandon Maatheson (tous deux du groupe Rubber City Rebels).

Case et Collins ont écrit Many Roads To Follow un soir chez Paul à Folsom Street, en 1976, après un de leurs mémorables dîners du genre j'ai-une-patate-et-t'as-un-oignon. Le style acoustique de la chanson constituait un grand changement pour eux à l'époque.

Les autres toutes premières démos dont on a pu retrouver trace sont en pistes 18 à 20, elles datent du début de 1976 et ont aussi été enregistrées à l'appartement de Folsom Street, San Francisco.

Les morceaux en public (pistes 11 à 17) datent de la tournée de 77, d'un concert donné à Schaumburg, Illinois, dans la banlieue de Chicago. C'est, dit Case, un bon témoignage de ce que les Nerves pouvaient donner sur scène.

Bravo à Alive Records pour ce déterrage de reliques qui seront précieuses aux fans des Plimsouls et du Paul Collins Beat.

Ooh, this is a treat. If you like a bit of punk, and who doesn't? ** grins mischievously **

I'd never heard of these guys, until they played the original of "Hanging on the Telephone" one morning on BBC 6 Music.

Do yourselves a favour and get it. Nuff said.

Wow, I never thought this release would see the light of day. I discovered the Nerves by working backwards from the Plimsouls and the Beat, but for years their music was pretty much impossible to find. In fact, the only Nerves songs I had before I got this CD were "Hanging on the Telephone" and "When You Find Out" from the Rhino DIY American Power Pop compilation (which is itself out of print). I am trying to get across what a treasure trove of undiscovered gems this release is.

While I love power pop, I do not feel the label applies all that well to the Nerves, at least not in the way that it does to the Raspberries or the Rubinoos. This is straight up rock and roll. It's just three guys playing their instruments and singing, with a youthful energy, a sense of urgency, and an exuberance that makes the music timeless. The songs are fast and never get boring (most clock in at around two minutes). Did I mention the songs themselves are top notch and catchy as hell? I guarantee that you'll find yourself singing along and tapping your hands on the steering wheel, arm rest, or whatever is handy. The sound quality of the live recordings (8 out of the 20 tracks) on the disc isn't too good, but it is fortunate that we have the music at all. My top picks are of course "Hanging on the Telephone" (still better than Blondie's cover), "When You Find Out", "Paper Dolls", "One Way Ticket", and "Walking Out on Love."

In short, if you are a fan of fine songcraft, rough & ragged rock & roll, or good music in general, this CD is essential. It's not like you're going to find these songs anywhere else!
