Arena's baker's dozen, one-word-named tunes are from another time entirely: thoughtful, intense and expertly crafted rock songs that straddle the line between pop and prog. Rundgren continues to make music that pushes the envelope of his best work, regardless of current musical trends. The great songwriter and genius producer of Cheap Trick, the Runaways, Meat Loaf, Hall and Oates, and XTC is neither resting on his laurels nor performing his greatest hits at the Kansas state fair--although he did assume Rix Ocasek’s mantle with the New Cars, but that's something else entirely. トッド・ラングレン、
いわずとしれた才気あふれるミュージシャンの1人と理解している。
2004年に「ライアー」を出してからというもの、
長らく新譜がでていなかったが、
今回2008年9月おわりに新譜「アリーナ」が本当にでるようだ。

おちょくったようなタイトルと不思議なジャケット・・・
2008年8月28日現在、発売がまだなのでまだ聴けていないのですが
いまのところ一部マイスペースで聴けます。

多分、この「MAD」という曲は
シングル？先発曲になるのでは思いますが、分類としては
大きくくくればクラッシックロックなのでしょうか？
陳腐な言い回しかもしれませんが
メロディアスかつポップ、そしてガッツのある曲という印象でした。

早く新譜を聴きたいので、思わず英国版を予約してしまいました。
興味のあるかたはどうぞ。
この年齢で現在進行形というのがトッドのすごいとかなと、再認識したしだいです。
久しぶりに待ちどおしい音源！！です。

　４年ぶりの新譜ということですが，編集ものやユートピア，最近はカーズまで活動を広げているので，あまり時間が空いた気がしません．トッドラングレンは作品毎（または2〜3枚毎）に作風を大きく変化させたり，全く違うアレンジでセルフカバーしたりして常に新鮮な驚きを与えてくれるアーティストですが，今回は70年代のユートピアを彷彿させるハードなギターや男声コーラスを含むアレンジが目立つようです．track 9ではクラシックな感じにシーケンサーで打ち込まれたシンセサイザー音も使ったりして，けっこう当時を意識しているんじゃないでしょうか．この人名義ではあたりまえのことかもしれませんが，技術的な意味での音のよさは現在も先端的な存在だと思います．響くべき音は響き，広がるべき音は広がり，空白であるべきところは空白．無駄がありませんが全体としては人間的でホットなトッドラングレンの世界です．昨日受け取ったばかりでまだこれからですが，繰り返し聴き込むと，メロディーが心に残る曲（track1,2,5,10など）もあると思います．まずは期待を裏切らない第一印象でした．アナログ時代のようにじっくり聴けそうな１枚です．

それにしても佳曲揃いなのがTodd　流石です

このアルバムを買った理由は、もともとＴｏｄｄ　Ｒｕｎｄｇｒｅｎのファンだったことと、視聴して”Ｍｏｕｎｔａｉｎｔｏｐ”という曲がとても気に入ったので。この一曲のためでもいいと思い購入しました。（Ｔｏｄｄの曲は１回聴いただけでは好きになれない曲もけっこうあったので。）他の曲も聴いてみると。。。ビックリしました。全曲最初から好きになりました。一曲一曲ユニークで、数回聴いて特に好きになったのは、”Ａｆｒａｉｄ”、”Ｃｏｕｒａｇｅ”（とてもＴｏｄｄっぽい）と“Ｐｉｓｓｉｎ”（変な題ですが）。ロック色の強いＴｏｄd,透き通ったバック・コーラス、しっかりしたギター・ベース・ドラム・ワーク。すっかり魅了されてしまいました！

「セカンド・ウィンド」以降のトッドは、ロック好き、ポップス好きからすると、ややアプローチを捻りすぎて、ファンをも振り切り過ぎてきたように思う。（少なくとも僕は振り切られて周回遅れになってしまいそうでした。。。）

前作（といっても４年前）の「Liar」でちょっと追いついたように思いますが、それでも、ややクールさが勝ったアレンジメントと意外に起伏の少ないメロディに、物足りなさを覚えたのも事実。

そして、遂に、本作ではジャケット（小さいと見難いのですが、ギターとシンバルを持って観客の中に飛び込もうとしているイメージです）が表すとおり、全編、ギター・ロック・コンポ編成のサウンド（それも全てトッド演奏！）で、７０年代の「Faithful」のＢサイドをほうふつとさせるようなロックサウンドを炸裂させてくれている。

確かに７０年代の神がかり的なポップさ、メロディの冴え復活とまではいえないし、彼らしい捻りの要素がなくストレートすぎるところに物足りなさを覚えてしまう点もあるが、それは贅沢というものだろう。ここまで実直にロック、ポップスと向き合い、そのアレンジ、演奏に手作りアナログ感覚をここまで導入してくれたことは本当にうれしい。

ユートピアでここでの曲を演奏してくれたら最高なんだけど！

全体的にはアルバム"Oops wrong planet"あたりの雰囲気かな。
アルバム"One long year"的なシンセとの絡みもありすこしあり、
ハードではあるが、ポップに仕上がっている。

Super album de 2008 ! ... Les années n'ont pas d'emprise sur la créativité et le talent de Todd Rundgren ! .... Comme beaucoup de ses albums, celui-ci est joué, interprété, chanté, produit par Todd R' lui-même . Le son est "top", le mixage aussi et pas mal de morceaux ont une empreinte bien Rock, voire Hard-Rock, avec des clins-d'oeil à certains groupes existants ( cf : AC/DC ...) . Great one dans l'excellente discographie déjà bien fournie .... commencée en 1968 (en ce qui concerne ses albums solos) .

A great heavy rock CD, different form his Liars CD , but a very solid outing. Arena is a fine title since it is meant to be played as a big arena concert. Always like Todd to change up his styles, a great CD to turn up the volume and drive your car.

While not quite as complex as the Kuebler-Ross construct of dealing with grief - Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance - I find myself going through the following process when first trying to assimilate a Todd CD, especially one dating from the late 1980s or later:

1. Denial: On first listening, a typical thought is: "It's not another Something/Anything?; not even another Wrong Planet. I don't like it."

2. Reflection: This stage usually occurs no sooner than two weeks -- sometimes two months -- after the first listening. It is marked by sentiments such as, "Okay, I bought it; maybe I should listen to it more than once. He's rarely let me down before." "Hey, there's a catchy hook. Hmmm."

3. Accelerating acceptance: This stage usually occurs a few days later, sometimes immediately after Reflection. Typical thoughts: "Yes, that was unexpected. A lesser musician would have settled for something not as imaginative." "Say, that song was slick; I remember it from my first listening. Nice turn of phrase too. This isn't so bad after all."

4. Full acceptance and more: "Oh man, how could I ever have missed all this stuff the first time! This is a great CD. Some of these songs should be getting heavy air play, and they are definitely going into the TR Favorites playlist on my iPod" (which, ahem, now contains more than 60 songs from most of the Rundgren catalogue).

On Arena, I'm solidly in Stage 4, and it did take a fourth listening. There are some dynamite songs on this CD. The first one, Mad, is a typical Rundgren feat of misdirection. He sets you up with this placid, sweet intro on acoustic guitar. The song gradually intensifies and soon we're almost into Rammstein mode. "This is mad; this is more than upset." Other GREAT songs on this CD are Gun (hilarious, pointed lyrics and catchy as hell, reminiscent of Swing to the Right); and Mountaintop, which is based on some very clever tone painting. And I see a lot of people are raving about Courage (which I do like but which is not, IMO, on the level of the previous three).

Most of the songs pay homage to live-performance bands, including Utopia, but all of them are original and without exception are undeniably Rundgrenesque. This is a sensational CD by the then 60-year-old TR, born in 1948 and who has been captivating us for more than 40 years, since Nazz. I am tempted to deduct one star for vocals. Just like with a 60-year-old opera star, Todd is showing a little strain at the top (well, so is Placido Domingo). And I do have to agree with those who say the vocals are not clear enough; he should have moved them forward or done something to get his voice out front, because there are some great lyrics here...though I could have done without some of the imagery in Pissin'. A five-plus rating for performance, four for sound. Add in the enthusiasm and the realization that Todd has still "got it," that makes an overall five in anyone's book. This album not only overflows with energy, it is brimming with the qualities that we have come to love and expect from Todd...even if it takes four or so listenings to get there.

"Produced, performed, and written by Todd Rundgren," say the liner notes. That's what we want.

Right.I've had this album for over two years now and played it tonight for the
umpteenth time and just wonder what some people want from a rock album.
It's bloody great.The people on here who want his earlier stuff like
Cliche regurgitated are looking in the wrong place. Todd Rundgren does not replicate
himself.He moves on.We've got to accept that and embrace it because that's what
makes the man he is.
It's exactly why fans like me have been into this fella for decades.
I remember this album getting reviewed in Mojo magazine and the reviewer saying
it's all the same pace.WHAT!Did he not hear the change in tempo from the rockers
to blues to the ballads? Did he listen to it?Probably not it seems.
One day TR will hang his boots up .The world will be a poorer place.
