Just a short review as I notice that there doesn't seem to be too much on Amazon about this excellent group.
The music : It's what some people would call free bop, but it's way beyond that in terms of musicality especially the arrangements. Although much of the music is hard swinging with free-ish solos, it's certainly not your 'squeak bang' style, if anything one could think more of a blend between the subtle drum-less trio of Jimmy Giuffre meets post John Coltrane, maybe you could even think (more recently) of some Dave Douglas ...... yes really! There are lots of lovely arrangements and superb compositions that really make you sit up and listen and these guys have been around playing all sorts of music (mostly in the free-improvised area) for years and are at the top of their game. However here we find them in a more 'melodic' world building solos around these compositions that range from gentle ballads (almost) to really hard swinging music, and I mean HARD swinging. Although it's not that important it seems that CD 1 is a little more energy based swinging, whereas CD 2 has a few more gentle sounds on it, but that's just a general impression. The 3rd CD is a live recording, which is a slightly (well recorded) bootleg sound, the other two being excellent studio recordings.
The group is a kind of Nordic supergroup when it comes to free jazz, or just plain modern jazz - Fredrik Ljungkvist (sax/clarinet), Magnus Broo (tmpt), Harvard Wiik (piano), Ingebrigt Haker Flaten (bass), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums).
The previous box set 'The Bikini Tapes' is impossible to find, and was really incredible - I was almost shocked by the constant high standard of the music on that set. That was also a triple CD set of live material from a tour throughout Europe. What you have here is also a triple CD set, yes indeed, and you should certainly think of getting whilst it's still available as this one is almost as good.
