ナポレオン・ソロのサントラ「The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Vol 3」

An overlooked little classic!

From my first spin of the vinyl version of this album (found in a Woolworth's 44-cent bargain bin some forty years ago), I considered The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. to be one of the most instantly enjoyable and downright fun of the Old School spy/detective soundtrack genre. A little jazzy, a little easy listening, every cut should bring a smile for those who appreciate 60s nostalgia.
Just for starters, there is the familiar brassy theme from The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but then the rest of the tracks belong to our mini-dressed plucky heroine.
For sneaking around corners and peeking through windows, there is the sly camp of "Shall We Gather At The Boat Dock," and "Mother Muffin." For those climactic chases through dark Third World alleys and bustling urban streetscapes, there are the tense frenzies of, "Sneaky Search," "Somewhere In Greece," "Movin' On," "Out Of The Frying Pan," "Bomb Scare," and "Follow the THRUSH." And then, for a few silken cocktail hour breezes that could get you feeling a little tipsy on a Shirley Temple, there are, "The Countess," "April," and "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E."
Doubtful they realized it back in '66, but Goldsmith, Grusin, Randazzo and Shores crafted a too-brief little masterpiece of the spy music genre; today it strikes the ear as an ultra-cool trip back to those happily innocent Cold War movie and TV days when the world's most sinister Bad Guys could be foiled by hot American babes whose frosted white lipstick tubes doubled as radio transmitters.

This is the cd reissue of an album that I still own from the 1960s, when James Bond and all the other secret agents of the day ruled tv and the movies. This nostalgic package offers great tunes and arrangements. It’s well worth the price for all those memories.

A great momento from the mid-1960s

The music on this album sounds very little like it did on the actual TV show. The fantastic original music cues by the likes of Jerry Goldsmith, Dave Grusin and Richard Shores are "re-imagined"(God, I hate that word) by the late New York jazz artist Teddy Randazzo. I was a little kid when this disc first appeared and I remember being ultra-disappointed when I finally slapped it on my turn-table. Like the Hugo Montenegro MAN FROM UNCLE albums before it, the tracks sounded very little like they did on the TV program. But, damn it, it's all we had at the time. Thankfully, decades later, FILM SCORE MONTHLY finally put out the original tracks as heard on the show(on their MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Vol. 3 2-disc set).
Now, in retrospect, this album really sums up the "Big Apple" jazz sound that prevailed in the swinging '60s. And that cover with Stephanie Powers is really a stand-out pictorially. If you're a fan of the show, it's worth a spin.
