Il disco si inserisce nella fascia "easy listening" di John Zorn, che non smette mai di stupire per la qualità elevata di ognuno dei suoi numerosissimi dischi. Disco jazz con qui e là vaghi echi yiddish, suonato da musicisti fidati e bravissimi: Rob Burger al piano, Greg Cohen al contrabbasso e al basso elettrico , Ben Perowsky alla batteria.
Consigliato a tutti, utile a chi non conosce Zorn e vuole cominciare da qualche cosa di non particolarmente complesso.

I think "Alhambra Love Songs" has it all; relentless melodies, perfect musicianship, and the immaculate sound of a piano trio that isn't like some Bill Evans or Vince Guaraldi rip-off. This has the Zorn stamp all over it, but like the peacock feather on the cover, it is light and delicate. The one Zorn album in recent memory that may match this recording in volume is "The Rain Horse." Maybe.

"Alhambra Blues," "Novato," "Miramar," and "Pacifica" sound samples should give you a good impression of the overall feel of this recording. Sure, it's only three instruments. But it's all music. High art. I recommend it.

Zorn's cycle of love letters to the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most mellow albums of his career. Performed by a piano trio, the music is described as easy listening, but shades from jazz to New Age without losing its serene, untroubled vibe.

Greg Cohen, best known for his acoustic bass playing, here adopts an electric bass at times: it's a subtle change, but in an album where small alterations can have a big impact, it is telling, enabling the trio to shift into a funkier, syncopated mode on tracks such as "Larkspur". The feel-good atmosphere is not lost when the music changes gear, and there is a surprising range of basic material here, including pieces which almost approach Masada orientalism.

There are touches of minimalism here that, while not entirely unknown in Zorn, may surprise some listeners. "Tiburon", for example, reins in Rob Burger's abilities as an improviser and forces both piano and bass to repeat their figures with an almost obsessive rigidity. It is the one false note on an album that is one of the purest statements of Zorn's pastoral lyricism.
