2009 release, the third album from the British Rock/Pop quartet. The Rakes decided they wanted to record in a fresh and exciting new environment, so they relocated to an industrial area in the old Communist part of Berlin. "The London music scene is so dull - it's like wading through a swamp of shit. We just wanted to be somewhere more inspiring", said Rakes singer Alan Donohoe. "Someone suggested Berlin. It didn't take long for everyone to agree, we packed our bags and moved here just like that. We love it". They lived and recorded in the grounds of a Bauhaus-designed, Soviet radio station that had been converted into a studio. On working with producer Chris Zane, Alan Donohoe adds: "The album is raw, playful, exciting, complex and schizophrenic - much like the personality of Berlin itself. It couldn't be more of a fitting place to record it". V2.

third and last cd by this band not as good as the first two had all there familier trademark musical traits and also offered some slightly new musical ideas worked into there songs .But despite this you could hear that some of there magic had gone and their previously infectious enthusiasm appeared to be on the wane Still a great band that deserved greater success. But all bands have their time at the forefront of a movement or big times in the spotlight The rakes by now had faded into the limelight and bowed out But they left behind a great musical legacy of catchy tunes and commercially viable songs that captured the publics attention and interest for a magical five year period

Cette sortie du nouvel album de The Rakes nous amène a effectuer deux analyses:La premiere consiste a nous pencher sur le contenu de ce nouvel album qui nous renvoi tout droit a l'epoque du premier album "Capture/Release" comme si The Rakes n'avait jamais sorti "Ten new messages" ,deuxieme album un peu raté mais qui montrait une evolution sonore.Donc pas de "The world was a mess...",ni de" We danced together ",ni de "When Tom Cruise cries" sur ce 3eme album.Le probleme de cet album est qu'on ne trouve pas non plus ni de "Retreat " ni de "22 grand job" ni de "Open book" qui faisait le bonheur du premier album..
Alors quelques bons moments cependant comme "That's the reason" ou "1989" qui montrent que la bete est bien vivante mais une incertitude plane quant a la direction que souhaite suivre le groupe.... Pour resumer: un son brut ,sans fioriture le tout balancé en moins d'une 1/2 heure...
La seconde analyse nous renvoi tout droit a 2005 ou une éclosion de nouveaux groupes venait eclairer la brit-pop et dont The Rakes fait partie...
Certains groupes comme Kaiser Chiefs ou Bloc party ont sorti avec plus ou moins de reussite leur 3eme opus ,les autres Maximo Park et autres Art Brut doivent dans ces prochains jours rejoindre l'equipe ce ceux ayant 3 albums a leur actif...et qui ont quelque peu déçu avec leur second album.
Combien de ces groupes si prometteurs survivront a cette epreuve ?
Pour ce qui est de The Rakes il y a encore un peu d'espoir .. De grace Maximo Park et Art Brut ,ne nous decevez pas....

The Rakes gehören für mich zu den Bands, die immer noch etwas übersehen werden und warum das so ist, kann ich mir nicht erklären.

Mit ihrem Debut Capture/Release haben sie uns einen dermaßen vor den Latz geknallt, dass es eine wahre Freude war. Leider ging das damals im allgemeinen New Wave of New Wave Hype ziemlich unter.

Das Nachfolgealbum Ten New Messages hatte weniger Power und es wurde nimmer so viel gezappelt, dafür stieg der Coolness-Faktor erheblich an und das Songwriting war erste Sahne, für mich deshalb ebenso ein echter Volltreffer.

Auf ihrem neuen Album Klang haben The Rakes wieder etwas mehr Adrenalin in die Songs gepumpt und Sänger Alan Donohoe, der optisch an Mattew Bellamy von Muse erinnert, gibt dabei erneut Vollgas. Heraus kommt ein Album mit Songs, die an Spaß kaum zu überbieten sind. Der Opener "You're in it" geht gleich in die Vollen und bei "That's The Reason" gibts dann kein Halten mehr. Das erinnert doch stark an Capture/Release. Da kann das Tanzbein nur noch zappeln. Wird das Tempo etwas reduziert wie auf Bitchin' In The Kitchin' tritt das Songwriting wieder in den Vordergrund und jede Menge Spielfreude.

Mit der Single 1989 ist ihnen ebenfalls ein guter Wurf gelungen und auch die restlichen Songs versprühen Freude pur. Wenn ich einer Indie-Band den Durchburch wünsche, dann sind es The Rakes, denn die müssen sich vor Größen wie Franz Ferdinand oder Maximo Park in keinster Weise verstecken. Aber vielleicht ist es gerade das was diese Band so gut macht, die müssen sich nicht an den großen Erfolgen der Vorgänger messen lassen, die ziehen einfach ihr Ding durch und das auf sehr hohem Niveau.
4 Sterne nur deshalb weil nach oben noch etwas Luft ist.
