Jay McDaniel is professor of religion at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He is the author of Gandhi's Hope: Learning from Other Religions as a Path to Peace (Orbis 2005) and Living from the Center: Spirituality in an Age of Consumerism (Chalice 2000). McDaniel is director of New Horizons: Center for Study of World Religions and Science and the Steel Center for the Study of Religion and Philosophy, both of which are based at Hendrix College.Donna Bowman is assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies and the associate director of the Honors College at the University of Central Arkansas, and she is the author of The Divine Decision: A Process Doctrine of Election (WJK 2002).

We live in an interesting time. Conventional Christian religion is in trouble - either disheartened and declining like Roman Catholicism or into manic denial like the Evangelicals. Islam is consumed by internal battle and has descended to the hopeless folly of violence. We live in a time when religion is casting off its shell to be reborn in a new form nobody can predict. Hans Küng has called it Paradigm 6, Buddhists look to the coming of the next Buddha, Mitrea. By the end of the 21st century world religion will be transformed. Process theology is just one of the factors in the great sea-change. It is not Küng's P6, but it gives a whiff of what it may be like. It is more or less Alfred North Whitehead meets Teilhard. The book, though no page-turner by reason of its academic pretensions, is a clear and balanced introduction and if you know little about Process theology at the moment you could do a lot worse.

The text offers a good overview of process theologies. I appreciated the inclusion of perspectives (Jewish, Christian, Hindu, etc.) from a variety of scholars and theologians. The topics covered provide a good illustration of the comprehensive worldview that process thinking offers. For the parish pastor, this would be a helpful text to work through, at least it was for me, by way of translating process insights into the weekly homily, potluck supper conversation or community activism.
