Marshall's title track to the movie 'walk hard, the dewey cox story' was nominated for a grammy award for best song from a movie in 2008.

I missed out on this one when it was first released. Can't remember why, but in any case, I finally got around to buying a few months ago and I was immeditately hooked. Which, of course, will come as no surprise to any fan of Marshall Crenshaw's music. The man just has that uncanny knack for writing insanely catchy pop songs. Guitar Pop, that is. Crenshaw is an ace songwriter, and has a pleasingly melodic voice, but his guitar skills up the ante considerably and make his music that much more dynamic. After just a few listens of this album, I was reasonably impressed, thinking it was a solid addition to Crenshaw's consistently fine catalogue of albums. But after I passed the dozen-times-heard mark, something kicked in and I realized: This really is a great album. Once again, those subtle hooks and melodies combine to stick inside your head and take root. If you've somehow lost track of Marshall Crenshaw over the course of the years --- and that's easy to do in these chaotic times --- dig back into the stuff he's been recording recently, particularly this gem of an album.

Marshall Crenshaw once said that he writes a lot of his songs in his car. That makes sense--the groove-laden rhythm of his songs, along with his catchy melodies and lyrics, capture the poetry of the turnpike wonderfully.

His new release, Jaggedland, while not ostensibly a 'car' album, definitely shows off that side of his personality. We have the rhythmic, self-performed "Gasoline Baby," the languorous grooves of "Just Snap Your Fingers" and "Stormy River," and the catchy-but-experimental instrumental "Jaggedland," which suggests that frustrating start-and-stop we get during rush hour in any metro area.

The tunes are up to the usual standard--bright, crystalline power-pop with solid hooks, occasional country touches, and simple, evocative lyrics that deal mostly with the human condition, especially interactions with the opposite sex ("Call my name and I just stare a hole through you").

The surprise for me, here, was in the vocals--while Crenshaw can still do the bright, clear tones we've become accustomed to, on this album he chooses to sing to the song--the opening track, "Right On Time," serves as a stellar example of this--he starts off quiet, low but melodic, giving the song more gravity than it might have otherwise. Of course, when he does kick in that brightness it makes the tune that much more special. He's becoming an interpreter of his own material, and that's a very good thing.

Overall, while Jaggedland doesn't scale the heights of earlier albums like Marshall Crenshaw or Life's Too Short , it's a rewarding effort from one of the best practitioners of guitar pop of the last 30 years. Well done, Mr. Crenshaw.

I always appreciated Marshall Crenshaw as a singer/songwriter, but only had purchased his greatest hits. I read a positive review of Jaggedland in a guitar magazine and decided to take a chance on it. Boy, am I glad I did! This is a supremely great pop album, great melodies, lyrics and guitar playing! It has been on constant rotation in my cd players since I got it this summer. If you like tuneful pop, you really can't go wrong with this. These songs stay in your head (in a good way), and I don't really skip over any of them when I put it on. Special mention has to go to "Never Coming Down", which starts as a beautiful country sounding song, and then (as another reviewer has noted) goes Beatley Abbey Road style, ear candy of the highest order! I also love the instrumental "Jaggedland", which reminds me of a Pearlfshers (David Scott) type interlude, sort of a bridge to the next tune. "Live and Learn" is a neat closer with a fine chorus, catchy as all getout! A fine effort, as Marshall plays most of the instruments as well. Highly recommended!

Marshall Crenshaw's "Jaggedland" sparkles with a delightful marriage of unique melodies, stunning vocals and witty lyrics. The opener "Right On Time" throbs joyfully with a dreamscape lyric, "There were holes in the ballroom floor leading straight into the blue sky, where the planes fly." "Passing Through" looks back at an old love with a dreamy midtempo track. The instrumental title track is a lovely melody with Deborah Assael's cello adding depth. "Just Snap Your Fingers" sounds like a renegade 60s charmer. The closer is "Live & Learn" co-written with Dan Bern, a haunting dreamy retro-pop, "I've got a handful of bitter regrets like when I betrayed someone who helped me when I was down." My favorite track is the blues-inflected "Stormy River" with a disquieting churning melody, "It's a bitter wind that's raging in you; In you so long you no longer hear it; It sweeps across the floor of your spirit." "Someone Told Me" & "Gasoline Baby" are both strong tracks. "Jaggedland" is an incredible disc that keeps you guessing and glued to the music. Bravo!

Marshall Crenshaw has been a family favorite pretty much my whole life, but I've taken my own shine to his later career catalogue. Life's Too Short, Miracle of Science, & Jaggedland are on consistent rotation in my library. Had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert with Los Straitjackets a few years back and he played a ton of songs from these albums. Now, he's just one of my favorites.
