Borne of Lisa Isaakson and her pals in backing group Piu (literally “more") hunkering down in a rural Swedish studio, this batch of bucolic and pastoral songs is part of the resurgence in folk music known as “freak folk,” which just means that it allows for more experimentation than the genre typically is known for. In “Forest Echo” a gong reverberates just as Isaakson concludes the song’s lyrics “tell you secrets/forest echo dark/revolution makes a mark/tell you secrets” in her mannered, crystalline and dulcet tone. A beguiling moment that produces chills. Further along sprigs of theremin, mellotron, and electric guitar whooshes are added to the basic recipe of acoustic guitars, hand percussion and the pure beauty of Lisa’s voice, while kettle drums and big, splashy cymbals pop up here and there, placed with careful perfection. Reading this you’d be forgiven for assuming the whole thing to be a bit too calculated and affecting, but there’s a warmth that crackles like a log on the hearth. The cover art is a sepia toned photograph of what is presumably a Swedish cottage overgrown with vines and a young woman holding we know-not-what, the image the visual equal to the notes within: slightly archaic with a whiff of mystery; chilly and yet inviting.
