Avett兄弟を中心としたノースキャロライナ３人組バンドAbett Brothersのメジャーデビュー作。
ブルーグラスをベースにオルタナティヴな独自のサウンド、そしてライヴパフォーマンスの質の高さで徐々に知名度を上げていったバリバリの生え抜き。
本作はRick Rubinがプロデュース、Benmont参加。
いままで以上に楽曲の良さ、エモーショナルなボーカルハーモニーを更に大切にしたフォークロックでインディ当初からのファンの評価は分かれそうな気もするが個人的にはこの路線は大好き。
チェロやハモンドオルガン、フィドル、グランドピアノ、マンドリン、バンジョが質の高い唄を支える。
同じくRubinプロデュースのOld Crow Medicine Show新作に近い感銘を受ける。
深く濃いアメリカンルーツへの敬愛を土台に唄う良質のフォーク・ロック・アルバム。

... gut möglich, dass Ihnen diese Melodie und diese Worte so schnell nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen, sobald Sie den Titelsong des Albums nur ein einziges Mal gehört haben. Und das ist nicht das einzige Stück dieses Kalibers auf der CD. Ja, die Brüder können Melodien für die Ewigkeit schreiben, die sich tief in die Gehörgänge bohren, und singen können die beiden auch, klar, kraftvoll, alleine oder im Duett.

Ich habe die Avetts auf Amazon-Empfehlung bei der Suche nach ähnlicher Musik wie Mumford&Sons entdeckt und dieses als erstes Album bestellt, das sofort den Appetit auf mehr von dieser Gruppe (...und auf ihren weithin in höchsten Tönen gelobten Live-Act!) geweckt hat. Im Vergleich zu meiner rasch wachsenden Avett-Sammlung hat sich herausgestellt, dass gerade dieses Werk mit am wenigsten mit dem Mumford-Sound zu tun hat. Neben Gitarren und Cello ist v. a. in der ersten Hälfte viel Klavier zu hören, das dieses Album ein Stück weg vom "Newgrass", wo die Avett Bros. am häufigsten einsortiert werden, in Richtung Singer-Songwriter-Musik rückt. Die Aufnahmequalität ist erlesen und bringt die Harmonien in Gesang und Instrumentierung zu voller Geltung. Teilweise tragen die Instrumente die Melodie und ergänzen den gesungenen Part, der dadurch fragmentarisch wirken kann und z.B. in "Ten Thousand Words" mit einer einzigen wiederholten Melodiezeile auskommt, ohne dass das Lied dadurch im Geringsten langweilig wird.

Und bei intensiverer Beschäftigung erweist sich auch das Songwriting - leider liegt kein Textheft bei, aber das Meiste kann man auch ohne verstehen - als sehr gelungen. Herausragend sind hier der Titelsong und "Laundry Room". Wie hier in den ersten Strophen anscheinend von einem jungen Pärchen erzählt wird, das sich im Waschkeller mit äußerster Vorsicht näher kommt, so dass die Eltern nur ja nichts merken; wie dann die Perspektive wechselt und sich herausstellt, dass der Erzähler nicht mehr ganz jung ist und seine schon eingeschlafene Liebe durch das Heraufbeschwören dieser ersten Begegnung wiederzubeleben versucht ("Break this tired old routine..."); und wie der Ausgang der Geschichte dann ganz ohne Worte in einem prächtigen Countryjam erzählt wird - das ist musikalisches Storytelling, besser geht's nicht.

Neben den eher getragenen, melodieseligen, klavierbetonten Liedern, die durchaus Vorläufer etwa auf den Gleam-EPs haben, findet sich aber auch klassischer Bluegrass-Country-Folk-Rock auf dem Album, die Sorte Hochenergiemusik, durch die Avetts hauptsächlich bekannt geworden sind (in "Perfect Space" beide Stile in einem Song), garniert mit einem guten Schuss Beatles-Harmonien und einem vereinzelten Spritzer Punk. Track 2 "January Wedding" verbreitet mit Banjo-Klängen am ehesten Country-Feeling. Es fällt schwer, Favoriten herauszupicken - am ehesten der Titelsong, das grandiose "Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise", natürlich "Laundry Room" oder last not least das mitreißende "Kick Drum Heart".

Fazit: Wer die (Mumford-)Söhne mochte, sollte den (Avett-)Brüdern eine Chance geben. (Überarbeitet am 21.2.2013)

Il est de ces albums qui s'imposent d'emblée comme des évidences, de ces oeuvres qui nous paraissent mille fois entendues et qui, pourtant, conservent une totale fraicheur. I and Love and You, déjà le 9ème album des frangins Avett, est de ceux-ci.

Il faut dire que l'intemporalité, les Avett semblent avoir ça dans le sang à commencer par leur choix de la Folk Music et d'une certaine épure, gage de ne pas tomber trop facilement dans les tics et gimmicks que chaque époque à le don d'imposer aux artistes. Pas de ça ici. Sous la férule de Rick Rubin (cumulant les fonctions de patron du label American et de producteur) les Avett déroulent leurs chansons où les arpèges lumineux, les choeurs harmonieux enluminent des compositions qui coulent de source.

Pour ce qui est des influences et ressemblances, on ne pourra nier que la paire fraternelle a quelque chose de CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young pour les ignares) ou, dans les formations plus récentes, de Wilco et des Jayhawks (voire des immenses Fleet Foxes). Pas franchement ce qui se fait de pire, avouez-le. On sent aussi que la scène country alternative de la fin des années 60 et du début des années 70 (Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, etc.) a laissé son empreinte dans cette musique à la fois terrienne et ethérée. Le plus fort c'est qu'on se dit souvent - tout au long des 13 titres qui composent l'album - que les Avett Brothers, malgré le lourd bagage de leurs influences, réussissent à se créer - si ce n'est une identité vraiment originale - un tour de main, un son distintifs de leurs petits camarades... Ce n'était pas gagné d'avance.

En résumé, si vous souhaitez découvrir un album simple et beau, sans artifice et sans volonté de coller à quelque mode que ce soit, I and Love and You vous ravira... Longtemps.
