ビートルズのレコーディングエンジニアだったジェフ・エメリックの著書を読んで初めて知った真実。
それはビートルズの楽曲は後期の作品以外全て「Mono」ミックスがメインだったと言うこと。
ターゲットがラジオやイギリスの一般家庭のレコードプレーヤだったためだそうです。
Mono Mix とStereo Mixは全然違いました。
ジェフ曰く　先に仕上げるのがモノミックスで、ステレオはその後言わば「やっつけ」的に行なったそう。
ジョージ・マーティンも本当のサージェントペッパーを聴きたければモノミックスを聴いて欲しいと言っていたとか。これは聴かなければ分からないのです。
もちろんレコード（LP）の方が良いのですが、あっちは高すぎて。
CDでも魅力は十分伝わります。

新古品でこれ以上は望めないような状態の商品でした。盤面は13枚完璧でした。
「ビートルズを聴くならmonoに限る」らしいですね。プロデューサーが言ってたそうです。「サージェントペパー」はモノで聴かないと本当に聴いたことにならないそうです。
ブックレットがとても良かったです❣️えこひいきのない解説でした。勉強になりました。
「NOW AND THEN」がきっかけでもう一度ビートルズを真剣に聴いてみようと思いました。「HELP！」と「RUBBER SOUL」はステレオバージョンも入ってました。
数年前に亡くなったリアルタイムでビートルズの大ファンだった年の離れた友人はこのセット聴いたでしょうか。きっと喜んだでしょう。

（2024年時点の感想です）1990年代に不自然なステレオ配置のCDで入った世代ですが、これは驚いた。モノラル=曇った音、情報量少なめという固定観念が覆され、当時のメンバーが練り上げていったであろう音、数々のステージで鍛えた一糸乱れぬバンドサウンドを高解像度で堪能できる。特にラバーソウルとリボルバーは、以前の不自然に左右に振られたステレオよりも音が一体になって迫ってくる。ペパーは作り込んだ音世界がステレオのように四方八方ではなく正面から押し寄せてくる、モノラル録音技術の究極体験。その後リマスターアルバムも多数出たし、2023年の赤盤青盤は特に初期のイメージが一新されるくらいの衝撃だったけど、モノラルの魅力は代えがたいものがあります。

ホワイトアルバムのモノラルとステレオを聴き比べました。
端的に言うと、ステレオ版はダイナミックレンジが大きい、楽器のエッジがたっている、全体的に明瞭です。
あぁ、これがリマスタリングなんだなと納得です。
しかし、モノラルの方がバランスが自然で実際の演奏に近いだろうな、と想像します。
CDとレコードの聴き比べに近い部分でもあります。
どっちで聴きたいかはモノラルですが、まだ全部は聴いていないので暫定です。

無事に正規品を入手できました♪

活動期間中にイギリスで発売された mono
音源の集成です。Yellow Submarine は A 面
（Beatles 演奏分）のみの収録になります。

Help!, Rubber Soul は発表時の LP プレスに
使われた stereo マスターをオマケで収録。

マスタリングはかなり渋めな音色の定め方。
初期の音源が恩恵を受けた印象です。配信を
前提にした配慮かもしれませんね。

装丁はミニチュア・レプリカそのもので、
紙製の内袋も再現されています。Magical
Mistery Tour は 米 Capitol 盤の仕様です。

長年アナログのレプリカは質を保つ形で提供
されてきた Beatles も、デジタルの世界では
転機を迎えつつあるのかなあ…

「楽譜オリジナル」のクラシック音楽では、指揮者や演奏家が違えば、
また違った風に聞こえて、その曲を改めて味わうことができる。
ロックやポップスでは、「演奏（あるいは歌唱）オリジナル」なので、
同じ曲を違った角度から味わい直すということは基本的にあまりない。同じ曲を何度も聴くことはできても。

ビートルズの場合、ステレオ・ミックス時代に彼らの音楽を体験しているとしても、別物として「モノラル」という選択肢がある。
そしてこのモノラル・ボックスを聴いてみると、さまざまな楽しみが含まれていることに気づく。

自分は1961年生まれなので、音楽を聴き始めた時には、彼らは解散していて、
「赤盤・青盤」と呼ばれたベストアルバムから入った。その後、オリジナル・アルバムへ。
以下は、「Mono Box」のメリットを箇条書き風に。

１）初期の何枚かは、聴いていなかったので、今回初めて彼らの全オリジナル・アルバムを聴くことができた。
ビートルズは、アルバムとシングルを分けていたので、アルバムだけでは主要曲は揃わないが、
このボックスは、それを「モノ・マスターズ盤」で補い完成させている。
LP時代に封入されていたポスターやポストカード等まで忠実に再現されていて、
そのオリジナル・リスペクト感はハンパではなく、感動的。

２）彼らの時代のほとんどのリスナーたちはモノラル再生環境だったので、
メンバーとプロデューサーは、モノラルミックスに力を注いだ。彼らによる完成形は「モノラル」の方だった。
聴いてみると、ステレオ・ヴァージョンとは違った風合い、ニュアンス、ロックな荒々しさやグルーヴ感などが
感じられる。それとモノラルなので、オーディオセットの中心でいつものように聴くと、
やや違和感があるのだが、逆に少し離れたところや、隣室などで聴くと、音の塊がいい感じに聞こえてくる。
リリース当時の60年代にいるような気分にもなる。

３）初期の曲には、極端に短いフェイドアウトなど、やや疑問を抱くような曲もあるが、
『ラバーソウル』『リヴォルヴァー』といった中期、『ホワイトアルバム』などを聴くと、
ステレオミックスとは全く違う、彼らの本気というか、迫力、バンド・サウンドなどに触れられる。
それは凄みさえ感じさせるものであると同時に、まったく自然な音質で表現された彼らの天才、作品世界。
これはモノ・ボックスでしか体験できないものだろう。

ポップスとロックの音楽世界を最も魅力的な世界で突き詰め、深め、そして広げた彼らの音楽の魅力を
新鮮な形で体験し直すことができる幸福なボックスセットである、ということができる。

国内盤は割高だが、今回用のライナーノート（すべてのアルバムの特徴、当時の彼らの背景。そして全曲解説）、
全歌詞、その対訳まで掲載されているので、国内盤の方をオススメする。最高評価の一品。

Something strange happened to the public perception of the Beatles in the 90s. Britpop's open worship finally elevated them to an utterly unimpeachable position – it's impossible to imagine any artist today daring to be photographed defacing a Beatles sleeve, as Johnny Rotten once was – but it promoted a foreshortened version of the Fab Four, one whose career begins with Rubber Soul, or at a push, 1965's Help! These days, their first four albums are invariably vastly outsold by those that came later, when drugs and sitars and the fear of encountering an unexpected vocal contribution from Yoko Ono had caused their more conservative fans to flee: "The Beatles have got awfully strange these days," as famous Windsor-based rock critic Queen Elizabeth II is alleged to have protested in 1967. As a result, the Beatles enjoyed by HRH – mop-topped and besuited, packaged for family consumption – appear to have ended up tainted by a certain naffness in modern eyes.

But at the time, they were clearly anything but. They may be more sophisticated, varied and vastly more influential on current music, but The White Album and Revolver didn't change the world in the way Please Please Me and With the Beatles did. If you believe the late Ian MacDonald's peerless book Revolution in the Head, the latter albums signalled a social change "away from the old class-based order of deference to 'elders and betters' to the frank and fearless energy of the younger generation". Set against that, inspiring Be Here Now and Beetlebum seems pretty small beer.

Nevertheless, if you weren't around in 1963, it's sometimes been difficult to work out precisely why the music contained on the early Beatles albums had such impact. If you grew up in the 70s or later, you invariably heard them in that terrible early-60s brand of stereo, with the instruments bunged in one speaker and the vocals in the other, as if a blustery old man with a bowler hat had covertly crept into Abbey Road and attempted to sabotage the coming youth revolution by making its harbingers seem as pathetic as possible. The 1987 Beatles CDs restored the first four albums to mono, but they still sounded brittle and tinny, as if they'd have difficulty changing a lightbulb, let alone the social order of Britain.

This may be where The Beatles in Mono comes into its own. At first glance, it looks an extravagant frippery: an11-CD box set, featuring perfect miniature reproductions of albums pristinely remastered in a sonic format rendered obsolete almost half a century ago. But until 1969, the Beatles were disinterested in stereo: they oversaw the mono mixes of their albums, then left the rest to George Martin. The box set can thus proudly claim to offer "the closest you can get to hearing the authentic sound of the Beatles". On the later albums, that amounts to a handful of cosmetic differences: if it's striking to hear Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds with added psychedelic phasing effects, it doesn't radically alter your perception of the song. The early albums, however, are transformed.

The Beatles sound taut, vital and surprisingly brutal. Plenty of 60s British bands covered material by black US artists: they tended to bowdlerise it, but the Beatles made it more visceral. There's something authentically deranged about their covers of Twist and Shout and Money. Smokey Robinson's fabulous You Really Got a Hold On Me has its emotional compass shifted from melancholy to torment, with electrifying results.

If their debut suffers from a deficit of great original material, that only makes the subsequent qualitative leaps all the more astonishing. Within a matter of months, they had gone from the schmaltz of PS I Love You and Ask Me Why to the accomplishment and forcefulness of With the Beatles' There's a Place and Not a Second Time. Equally striking is how early and strongly the Beatles' respective personalities foregrounded themselves. The kind of anguish that was Lennon's stock-in-trade from Help! through to I Want You (She's So Heavy) is evident from the start: literally his first lead vocal on a Beatles album is "the world is treating me bad – misery". With the Beatles' Don't Bother Me is the first in a long line of George Harrison songs in which people were advised to bugger off.

By the time of 1964's Beatles for Sale, they're confidently pushing at the boundaries of their chirpy image. It opens with No Reply, I'm a Loser and Baby's in Black: utterly downcast, emotionally raw. Listening to them here, they sound not like a relic from a forgotten era of the 60s, but as thrilling and daring as they must have once done blaring from a Dansette in a suburban bedroom. You'd have to have cloth ears not to understand what the fuss was about.

To start off the packaging is absolutely superb with miniature lp replicas with details going all the way down to replicating the original inner sleeves booklets and cut outs. As the the musical content I'd have to say this box contains my favourite mixes of the albums. I'd highly suggest getting the cd version of this so you can rip it and put it on a mobile device as these mono mixes aren't available on streaming. As the booklet states mono is thay way the beatles intended for the albums to be listened to where the stereo versions were seem more of an oversight that generally had no involvement with the beatles themselves (at least for their early albums)

Anything anyone writes about the Beatles music is sure to sound trite and overblown. So I'll write about the box itself.
The 13 individual discs each have a small rice paper sleeve which slips into a paper inner sleeve that duplicates in miniature the original paper sleeve of the release. The mini album jackets are identical in design to the originals, even in the way the originals were fabricated-with the rear flaps folded on the outside of the jacket rather than the inside (for the earlier releases.) The spines have the appropriate titles in the same fonts and positions as the originals. And each jacket has its own individual resealable plastic sleeve for added protection. This attention to detail is marvelous, especially in today's music world where reissues are subjected to much corner-cutting to save time or money.
Any bonus items that were unique to the originals are included. Thus, Sgt. Pepper comes with the green cut-out sheet and the pinkish inner sleeve. The White Album includes the four Beatle portraits and the folded poster with lyrics on the rear. And, as was the case with the original British release, the inner sleeves are black and the gate fold album cover has the openings for the discs at the top rather than the sides. The mono mix of the American Magical Mystery Tour LP is included. This American compilation has been included since it is now part of the Beatles canon. The original British mono release of Magical Mystery Tour was a six song EP, now out of print. This CD comes with the deluxe picture book which was part of the original Capitol Records package.
The discs themselves have full-face label artwork which corresponds to the label art found on the original releases (Parlophone for most, except for Capitol on the Magical Mystery Tour and Apple for The White Album.)
There are some delightful bonuses in this package as well. Both Help and Rubber Soul feature 28 tracks- the original, wide-stereo mixes of these albums appear after the mono program. These older mixes were replaced by a 'newer', more balanced stereo mix by George Martin in the 1980's when the Beatles albums were prepared for their initial CD releases. These original stereo mixes can only be found today on the discs in this set.
There is also a 2-disc set called "The Mono Masters', which roughly correlates to the 2 disc set found the the complete stereo masters box.
I say roughly because there are some noticeable differences. Firstly, the version in the stereo box contains a few mono mixes, since there are a handful of Bealtes songs for which no stereo mix exists. And in the interest of completeness, these few mono mixes were included to make the collection fully representative of every song the Beatles issued. This approach was not used in the mono box. Thus there are no stereo mixes of any singles or EP tracks in "The Mono Masters" to make it fully representative of non-LP tracks. So missing in action are the 45 versions of "Let It Be", "The Ballad of John & Yoko" and "Old Brown Shoe" which were never mixed in mono. In their place, however, are 5 tracks which appear in their original mono mixes here for the first time. They are the 4 tracks which were unique to the Yellow Submarine soundtrack (the mono LP had fold-down stereo mixes) and the original mono mix of "Across The Universe" (the World Wildlife version). These 5 tracks were mixed in mono for possible release as an EP to accompany the release of the film "Yellow Submarine" but the plans and the mixes were shelved. Until now.
Finally, there is a booklet of photos and copy about these releases which makes for nice reading as you take your trip down memory lane while listening to these classics.
The package is a bit pricey. It is not considered a Japanese import as it is available as 'domestic' product in worldwide markets. But is indeed manufactured and assembled only in Japan. Which accounts for the high ticket price. And the fanatical attention to detail.......!!!
