内容紹介

This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. This golden era came to a sudden end when the Khmer Rouge took control of the country in 1975 and brutally attempted to destroy any trace of modern society. Sadly, while many of the recordings of modern Cambodian rock and roll survived, most of the artists who created it did not. Over the last decade DENGUE FEVER has culled this compilation of their favorite Cambodian rock and roll from many different cassette tapes. The great music you'll find here is a testament to the spirit of a modern Cambodia that existed not so long ago, and should be remembered today. Was featured on PRI's The World on 3/11/2010.

This music won't appeal to everyone --- even those listeners that are fans of Dengue Fever or Asian styles of "world music" --- but it's a delightful, energetic look at some the most beloved Cambodian recording acts of the 1960s and early 1970s --- many whom sadly did not survive the Khmer Rouge horrors. Singers such as Pan Ron, Ros Sereysothea, and Sin Sisamouth are legends of Cambodia music. Some of the material they recorded was a bit middle of the road at times, but as the title of this collection implies, here we have the more electric, if not wilder side of their output. Delightful stuff!

As noted by others, the sound quality on this CD is not up to modern standards, but considering that the songs were sourced mostly from old cassette tapes, I think the folks in Dengue Fever did an admirable job in putting this compilation together. For me, the emotional power of the music overcomes any deficiencies in the audio. My only criticism would be the lack of in-depth liner notes or background on these groundbreaking Cambodian recording artists. I realize it may not have been possible to obtain exact recording dates and other details about the songs, but I think many listeners would have appreciated more information about these artists and this period of Cambodian music.

The period covered on this compilation must have been an exciting era for music in Cambodia. The musicians and singers were obviously influenced and captivated by the music they heard that was being played in the US and England. You can hear the fuzztone and surf guitar riffs, along groovy organ playing, and funky bass notes, fused with more traditional Cambodian musical styles. Combining all these influences created a truly unique sound, although at times I'm also reminded of what was going on in Indonesia around the same time period (listen to the excellent "Those Shocking Shaking Days" for an Indonesian take on '60s and '70s rock music).

Here is the complete track listing:
1. Give Me One Kiss – Dara Chom Chan
2. Don’t Speak – Pan Ron
3. Jombang Jet – Pan Ron
4. Flowers in the Pond – Ros Sereysothea
5. Shave Your Beard - Ros Sereysothea
6. I Will Marry You - Pan Ron
7. I Want To Shout - Ros Sereysothea
8. Jasmine Girl – Pan Ron & Sin Sisamouth
9. I Want To Be Your Lover - Pan Ron
10. Hope to Meet You - unknown
11. Snaha - Pan Ron
12. I Will Starve Myself To Death - Ros Sereysothea
13. (untitled – Pan Ron
14. Cold Sky - Ros Sereysothea

Bonne musique de ces artistes perdus par le groupe américain Dengue Fever. Un univers à découvrir pour les passionnés de musique d'ailleurs.

If you're a fan of Dengue Fever, you really don't need my recommendation to buy this CD. Here we have the genuine article: Cambodian pop music of the 60s and early 70s by the original artists. The sound quality is dodgy; but, given the sources they were working with, that's understandable. We can only hope that growing interest in this music will result in the discovery of better quality sources of these recordings. In the meantime I'm happy that we have these, and you will be, too.

If you're not already a fan of this genre, then Dengue Fever's own albums may actually be a better place to start. Come back to this collection, or one like it, once you're hooked.

I heard bits of this album on LA's KCRW and was immediately intrigued. I missed the airing, but found the CD on Amazon. Two days later, I'm listening to the first song and I'm totally seeing how my parents would have been listening and enjoying this type of music in their days of youth. You certainly don't have to speak Khmer (neither my parents nor I do) to bring a big smile to your face. The music is almost exactly how I remember some of the Korean LPs my parents had when I was growing up. A lot of memories small and big, from the little pops you hear as the needle finds its way to the music tracks, to wondering how they can sing so high (before I learned about overdubbing). Maybe it's my imagination, but I think I can hear the little pops, and the impossibly high vocals still brings a big smile.

As the note on the CD indicates, most of the artists probably have died during the Khmer Rouge days. I see the CD as a small tribute to those artists. I thank Dengue Fever for opening up new avenues for people like me to discover music like this. And may these artists rest in peace.

I love Sonny Bono's song "Bang Bang". The artists on this album nail it! If you grew up in the sixities and want to hear the beat without understanding a word- you will love this album. The energy is great and the side story makes you think. I play this album whenever I need a lift. You will love it.
