HELIGOLAND features an all-star cast of guest vocals from DAMON ALBARN, HOPE SANDOVAL, MARTINA TOPLEY-BIRD, GUY GARVEY and TUNDE ADEBIMPE. Long time cohort HORACE ANDY makes a return alongside Massive Attack founding members ROBERT DEL NAJA (3D) and GRAND MARSHALL (DADDY G). Damon also plays bass on `Flat Of The Blade' and keyboards on `Splitting The Atom' while PORTISHEAD's ADRIAN UTLEY plays guitar on `Saturday Come Slow'. The band also collaborated with DFA's TIM GOLDSWORTHY on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by ROBERT DEL NAJA. Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including `Trouble In The Water', '44 Inch Chest', `In Prison My Whole Life' and `Gomorra', the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Massive Attack also won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards.

今回は生ドラムも多用していて、有機的なグルーヴが多いのに驚きました。
「踊れないダンスビート」と呼ばれた頃と違って、「なんぼか踊れる」トラックがいくつかあります。

鳥肌が立ったのはMartina Topley Bird。３曲参加してます。
Trickyと組んでた時代はよりガサガサとした声質のダウナー歌姫でしたが、最近はダウナーながらセクシーでコケティッシュでクール。
個人的には世界一クールな歌姫だと思います。
最初Martinaと知らずに聴いていて、「英国にはまだまだスゲェ表現力・存在感の女性シンガーがいるんだなぁ」なんて思ってたんですが、さすがにスゲェヤツは限られていたようで（笑）。

100th windowは3Dのソロでまとまりが良い反面、世界観が一定でした。とはいえ好きですが。
今回は、良くも悪くもバラバラです。
デーモン・アルバーン参加のトラックなど、旧来のMassiveファンからするとバンドサウンド（Blur）そのものかもしれませんし。

各種クリエーターにとっては強烈な刺激になると思います。
それこそが最も「Massiveらしい」と言えるでしょう。

８０年代のロックに傾倒していた私としては、デビュー版「blue lineｓ」はなかなか買えなかった。でもふとしたきっかけで聞いてみると、のめりこんでしまった。グルーブ感が新鮮だった。それ以来、新作がでると、購入していたんですが、teardropやprotectionの出来があまりにもよすぎて、少し過大に期待し過ぎた感があった。でも、１曲目から、何回も聞いていると、だんだん音の微妙なリズムが、とてもかっこよく思えてきた。傑作だとは、いいにくいけど快作だと思う。

massive attackの7年ぶりの5thアルバム。

前作"100th Windowは事実上3Dのソロ作品でしたが、今回はDaddy Gもしっかり参加。豪華なコラボレーション(blurのDamon Albarnも参加)も含め、非常に充実した作品になっています。

3rd"Mezzanine"以降は「冷たく重く暗い」無機質な曲が増え、その路線では正直行き詰った感もある彼らでしたが、今作は初期(1st"Blue Lines"や2nd"Protection")の頃のオーガニックかつドープな雰囲気が戻ってきたように感じます。

実験性溢れる音だけでなくHorace Andyらゲスト陣のヴォーカルも素晴らしく飽きさせませんし、アルバムを通じてのクオリティも非常に高いです(M4"Girl I Love You"とM10"Atlas Air"は特にお気に入りです)。1stから一通り聴いてきたひとも十分満足できる内容なのではないでしょうか。またベスト盤"Collected"を聴いて、Disc2の収録曲も気に入ったというひとにもおすすめです。

追記: 今更ですが、フジロックフェスティバル2010の最終日(2010/8/1)にヘッドライナーとしてmassive attackが出たので行ってきました。入場規制がかかった直前のAtoms For Peaceにも勝るとも劣らない圧巻のステージで、本作からは"Babel", "Girl I Love You", "Splitting the Atom", そしてアンコールの最後に"Atlas Air"がプレイされました。そして最後、(完全に余談ですが…)2011年は1st"Blue Lines"の発売20周年です。祝。

ファーストが出た時から聴いているので新譜が出ると迷わず買っている。
（多少迷う時も実際あったりしたけど、でも買ってる）

”らしさ”云々とかよりも、初めて聴くけど知ってる空気感に満たされて
いくのが心地いい。

ファーストから数えると年を取ったな（遠い眼）。
音に撫でられる様な感覚を今の音として満足してます。
…と若いファンには参考にならないオッサンの戯言だろうけど、
同じ様ないい年の人達も結構たくさん手を伸ばして同じムードになってる筈だ。

SADEも新譜を出したけど、自分の時間と一緒に在る音楽っていいよな。
批評は不要。おれには。
（そもそも20年選手に今現在向けの斬新さを求めちゃいけないように思う）

水を買う様に買って水を飲む様に聴いている感じ。

好きです。

Burialによる前編Remixアルバムも楽しみ。

La edición es espectacular, el sonido en vinilo gana todo,... y como siempre a la vanguardia de la creatividad musical. Y no es de los vinilos que se quedan demasiado tiempo en el mismo sitio. XD

Like most vinyl collectors & Massive Attack heads, I was ecstatic when I first found out that Heligoland was finally being reissued. And because the Bristol collective take wax seriously, I knew that this was going to be a reissue with substance. What I didn’t expect was a triple gatefold sleeve with tactile cover art, & a glittered finish, a 28 page booklet w exclusive art, and more so two chunky 180g records. In short, this is precisely why I continue to collect records as it represents the absolute best in music you can touch. After geeking out over the stunning sleeve & extras, I finally got to the real show, the wax itself.. Like all Massive Attack albums, it sounds big, rich and vibrant. Especially on Atlas Air (where I didn’t need to mess with my EQ levels at all) as its highs are crisp, its mids level, and its lows full of rumbling bass that doesn’t rumble your speaker casings. So yes, vinyl heads rejoice as this is one mother of an album. I did run into some sleeve damage (because of a shipping mishap), and some saucer warp on one of the records however this was quickly resolved with an exchange through Amazon’s excellent customer service.
This is one of those albums that you’ll show off whenever a friend is over listening to music as it represents the best in reissued albums.. It comes with a plethora of extras, and sounds even better than the original, something that never happens with downloadable or streamed music. If you’re a fan, you should have already pre-ordered this. If you’re a collector, this belongs in your library (even if you’re not into Massive Attack). As its price only seems to be climbing, I’d grab one now before it’s too pricey, or better yet, before they’re all gone.

Thank god for Massive Attack & thank god for good wax.

Ich möchte mit meiner Bewertung auf die Reissue an sich eingehen; über die Musik muss man sich ja, glaube ich, nicht mehr unterhalten. Nicht so gut wie "Mezzanine", aber durchaus eine starke Platte, und definitiv anders. Mein persönliches Favorite ist "Splitting the Atom".

Die Reissue ist vom Umfang echt stark:
- heavy weight Vinyl (ob das jetzt für den Sound besser ist, sei dahingestellt, fühlt sich aber einfach wertig an)
- das bekannte Artwork Booklet
- von Haus aus schwarze antistatische Innensleeves
- das Cover lässt sich nach erstem Ausklappen noch ein weiteres Mal ausklappen (triple gatefold heißt das, wenn ich mich nicht irre?)

Da man hier und auch auf Discogs liest, dass einige Leute Probleme mit Kleberückständen haben, noch ein Wort dazu: bei mir ist weder der Teil einfach zugeklebt, in dem im 2010er Original die dritte LP drin ist, noch habe ich Kleberückstände auf den Covern oder Platten, bei mir ist alles einwandfrei. Genauso der Sound, bei mir springt nichts, die Platte ist "dead silent".

Das Cover ist übrigens entgegen anderer Meinungen durchaus in eine LP Hülle zu kriegen (fairerweise habe ich eine von meiner ebenfalls triple gatefolded "Boards of Canada - Geogaddi" Platte vorgedehnte Hülle genommen), das Cover wird aber rechts an der Öffnung ca. 2cm rausstehen, da es in der Horizontalen einfach das Stückchen breiter ist als normale Cover.

Komisch finde ich persönlich in was für einer Preisrange die Scheibe hier auf Amazon und im Marketplace angeboten wird; von 21,99 bis deutlich über 50 ist alles dabei. Man kann übrigens anhand der Matrix Nummern und des Label Codes NICHT sehen, ob es sich um eine Ausgabe mit Glitzer Cover handelt oder eben nicht. Lasst euch überraschen. So oder so in Zeiten von vielen weniger qualitativ hochwertigen Represses eine echt richtig starke Reissue eines eh schon starken Albums.
