Not only is this an outstanding performance by Dejan Lazic and the Atlanta symphony, but Lazic's understanding of Brahms' idiom and compositional techniques is completely convincing. Had Brahms chosen to transcribe this Concerto himself, I am convinced he would have created almost the same result. My professional pianist friends, at first skeptical, have, on hearing the CD been fascinated and much impressed. As a professional string player I approached this transcription with reservations which totally disappeared on hearing the result. The solo additions on this CD are also very fine.
I bought this disc on the strength of the Radio 3 coverage from this year's Proms. Already being familiar with the Brahms Violin Concerto I was amazed at how new and fresh it sounded when transcribed for the piano. Unlike some transcriptions that sound a bit self-concious and 'not quite right' this sounded perfectly natural and unforced as if it had never been anything else but a piano concerto. As the first reviewer says, I'm sure Brahms would have approved. I must admit that I hadn't heard of Dejan Lazic but again, I have to agree with the earlier reviewer - his talent as a pianist is remarkable and it's a crime that he isn't more widely known - hopefully that will change after the Proms performance. Apart from his talents as a pianist he's clearly a gifted composer & arranger - has he composed anything of his own I wonder? It would be easy to hate this man - besides his obviously huge musical talents, if the disc cover is a true likeness he's also indecently good looking - life can be so unfair!!
JPM

Although not really "suited" to the piano - or so I would have thought - this previously unheard transcription of Brahms's Violin Concerto was too good to miss. The transcription is in fact masterful, the playing phenomenal. Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how felicitously, how creatively the solo violin line could have been rewritten for piano. Quite amazingly, it works - more than that, it stuns: the performance is a superb one. The orchestral score (left more or less untouched) is marvellously executed, delivered with mind-blowing conviction in what has been achieved here, in full accord with the pianist's own vision. This is a recording all Brahms's-lovers should own and cherish.
