2008年にデビュー・アルバムをリリースし、話題となったライトスピード・チャンピオン、待望のセカンド・アルバム!12曲のポップ・ソングに2つのインストゥルメンタル、そしてピアノのエチュード1曲により構成されている本作。彼が得意とするアメリカン・カントリー調のサウンドを中心に構成されたファースト・アルバム『フォーリング・オフ・ザ・ラベンダー・ブリッジ』に比べ、今回はクラシック、そして時には舞台音楽を取り入れる等、バラエティーに富んだサウンドに仕上がっています。アニマル・コレクティヴやナールズ・バークレイを手掛けたベン・アレンもプロデュースとミキシングに参加。70年代のギターやシンセ・サウンドを加え、よりエクレクティック感を出しています。

めっちゃ良いです。Lightspeed Championの2ndです。
ストリングスとピアノを多用したポップ・アルバムなんですが、インディ臭さも抜けてなくてゴージャス感も抑えられてます。とにかく曲がよく書けてますし、声が愛らしいですね。
かなり幅広いジャンルを愛してるソング・ライターらしく、8曲目なんて、寅さんが始まるのかと思いました。

1stにはEmmy The Greatらとの素晴らしい楽曲が収録されていましたが、
2ndとなる今作は若干抑え気味な、落ち着いた楽曲が続きます。
ロマンチックな歌い方が素敵ではありますが、
女性ヴォーカルが減った分、華やかさでは劣るかというのが自分の評価です。

下手にシーンの流れを追わず、
フォークを貫くのは評価できますが、
アルバムを通して起伏が少ないのが残念。
前作での『Midnight Surprise』のようなキラートラックが、
3rdではもう一度聴けるというサプライズを期待します。

The previous Lightspeed Champion album, "Falling Off the Lavender Bridge" was outstanding, but this second album by the band --- or rather, the talented Devonte Hynes --- might be even better. Listening to this album is a thrill, but it defies description, or at least easy classification. You certainly can't pigeonhole the sound; the songs run the gamut from pop and rock to "theatrical" (yes, at least one song wouldn't sound out of place on a 1970s album by Queen), and songs with blues and folk elements. And even more strangely, it all flows perfectly, making this a stirring and satisfying listening experience.

The only thing that stumps me is why this album, and this artist, is not more popular. As I write this, there are only 2 other reviews on this page for this album, and both of those are 5 years old! Okay, I realize the kids nowadays like to download single songs and perhaps aren't hooked on the concept of albums, but this really is a masterful recording, one that should be talked about and listened to by many more people. In a perfect world, Lightspeed Champion would be more popular than the likes of ho-hum groups like Mumford & Sons and Vampire Weekend. I don't think it's an understatement to say that Devonte Hynes is a musical genius, and this ambitious album reflects his creative talents. His subsequent project, Blood Oranges, is also a great "band."

If you get the CD, it comes with a 16-page booklet that includes lyrics to the songs, all of which were written by Devonte Hynes. Devonte also played each song, along with assistance from a 4-member band called 'Spacecamp' , and some other musicians who supplied string arrangements and backing vocals. Quite the production and a VERY engaging and vibrant album. Check this guy out immediately!!!

Mit dem zweiten Album unter dem Pseudonym Lightspeed Champion zeigt Devonté Hynes erneut was er musikalisch alles drauf hat. Auch wenn meiner Meinung nach das Album musikalisch nicht 100 % das transportiert was es könnte. Liegt vielleicht auch an der verstärkten Mitarbeit von Dev selbst.

Trotzdem ist das Album sehr gelungen. Live kamen allerdings die Feinheiten der Instrumente besser zur Geltung als auf CD.

Not much good new music coming out but this particular brand of easy listening hits me right in the sweet spot. A very accomplished effort that must have skimmed under the radar, in fact, I think I'll put it on right now!

What can I say about this guy he is so talented the music is memorable the melodies catchy You feel almost fancy listening to this record a bit on the folky indie side but not boring
