UKっぽさはしっかり残しつつも結構US寄りな作品な気がします。
質量ともに最高傑作と呼んで差し支えないのでは。

ストレートでパンキッシュな楽曲も聴かれます。
以前よりギター＆ベースが前に出て、そのくせキーボードも大活躍です。
緩急や変拍子も耳に残り、独特なASH節も随所に感じます。
コーラスワークとメロディーラインが絶妙です。

disk1の#04.13＆disk2の#01.02あたりは感涙モノ！？
disk1の#19｢Kamakura｣は親日家の彼らならでわ。

disk2は別ver.出血大サービス？の大量収録ですが、
バリバリのエレポップになっていたりとアレンジが効いてて面白いです。
まぁ、マニア向けの域は出ないですが。

ここ最近すっかり失速気味のASH。
紅一点シャーロット・ハザレイの脱退劇が影響している面も、ある程度はあると思いますが、というよりはやはり、彼らの存在自体が、めまぐるしく変転していくＵＫ音楽シーンのなかで、流行から取り残されていってしまったということなのでしょう。トラヴィスやフィーダー、ベルセバなんかもそのクチです。
が、しかし。
一年かけて２６曲のシングルリリースというトライアスロン的挑戦を行い、そしてやり遂げたその結果を２枚のＣＤにまとめたその第一弾となる本作に収録された楽曲たちは、そんな逆境などどこ吹く風の、超ハイクオリティなものばかりとなっています。
素晴らしいポップセンスとハードドライヴィングなロックンロールが、存分に満喫できる内容です。
これは、彼らの全盛期、特に「FREE　ALL ANGELS」のころと比べても、全く遜色のない作品群であり、商業的成功から完全に見放されてしまっている現況が、俄かには信じられないほどの優秀作であると断言できます。
いや〜、これをチャート上位に押し上げられないUKシーンって、ちょっとどうなってんだろう？
アイドルポップやエレポップばかり聴いてると、いい加減、頭が腐ってくるぞ！！
とでもぼやきたくなるくらい、いい作品集です。
コンピ作であるため、星は４つとさせて頂きましたが、内容的には５つでもほんとは構いません。
なので、やっぱり彼らにはちゃんとしたオリジナルアルバムを、もう一度作っていって欲しいと思います。
因みに、４ｔｈ作「MELTDOWN」が、僕にとっての一番のフェイヴァリット作です（メタルだ！）。

アッシュ6枚目のアルバム。
でもオリジナルアルバムという表現は正しくないかもしれないです。
なにせA〜Zに沿った26曲を2週間に1曲ずつ1年かけてリリースするという
途方もない計画が進行中で、
本作はその半分をVol.1としてまとめた言わば編集盤ですので。

通常のスキームから抜け出したかったということらしいのですが、
それにしても全曲シングルとしてリリース(ダウンロードと7インチLP限定)というのは凄いです。

聴いてみると分かるのですが、確かに全曲シングル級の華やかさと展開力を持っていますし、
アルバムジャケットのようなキラキラしたギターポップがたくさん詰まっています。

そしてダウンロードで購入済みのファンにも配慮してくれたのか、
追加の7曲＆ボーナスCDまでついて2600円という安さ。
コストパフォーマンス的にも多くの人にお勧めできる一枚だと思います。

「Return Of White Rabbit」のイントロの歪んだギターはいつ聴いても痺れます。
今日もこのアルバムを聴きたくなると思わせてくれます。

あと、蛇足かもしれませんが、
「Ichiban」や「Kamakura」など、日本を意識してくれてるのもなんだかうれしいです。

アルバムコンセプト等のしがらみから解放された
バラエティに富んだ輝く楽曲が眩しすぎる。

かつての某サッカーチームのように
戦術を度外視してスターをかき集めた
銀河系集団的なドキドキ感に満ちている。
本当にこれは凄い。

さらにいつも驚くのがアッシュの面々には全く
気合いをいれた感が感じられないこと。
肩の力抜きまくりでとんでもないシュートを
繰り出してくる。最高。

いい曲が揃ってますって次元ではない。
どこまでいくんだこいつら。

テレビで観た2曲目で即買い。
仕様は日本盤の方が豪華で、ボートラ2曲とリミックスやアコースティックアレンジ曲14曲収録のディスク２が入っています。
自分はとりあえず原曲だけ欲しかったので値段が安いこちらを購入しました。

内容的には、もう満足です。
どの曲もかっこよくて捨て曲がありません。

『True Love 1980』を4曲も聴かないでもいいという方やリミックスなどがいらない方はこちらでいいのではないでしょうか？

アッシュが期待を大きく大きく上回る快作を引っさげて帰ってきました!

前作が個人的に微妙な出来だっただけに、シングル26連発にも正直あまり注目していなかったのですが、
蓋を開けてみるとこれが素晴らしくポップで、ヴァラエティ豊かなアッシュ節全開の傑作。

ただシングルを並べただけ、それなのにこの説得力はやはり彼らの類稀なるソングライティング能力と、
妥協を許さない作り込み、そして失われることのない煌めきがあるからこそでしょう。

M2「True Love 1980」は号泣必至。ダウンロードだけでなくCDを買う価値が十分にあります!!

M1にまずやられました。ギター主体のアッシュらしい分厚いリフに約10秒ほど引きずりこまれると、その後デジタルサウンドとリフの絡み合い……
この一曲で購入決定。

キャッチーな楽曲を作らせたら、やはり彼等は最高だなと再認識した作品。

今回のコンセプトから当然楽曲はバラエティに富んでいるが、水準が高いだけに、納得できる出来映え。

M1,4,5,6,11,13は個人的にお気に入り。特にM13はこれぞアッシュと万人が納得の楽曲と思う。

特典の2枚目は……………………やり過ぎ(笑)

Album review:

Northern Irish indie rock and power-pop band, Ash, have released some excellent albums in their time. Back in 1996, when they released their breakthrough album, 1977 (named after the year they were born), I was an immediate fan thanks to gorgeous indie songs like Angel Interceptor, Oh Yeah and Goldfinger. Their 2001 album, Free All Angels, is also exceptional, but there have been other releases that haven't quite hit the mark (Nu-Clear Sounds, Twilight Of The Innocents). A-Z Vol. 1 is, strictly speaking, a compilation album, because over the space of year between October 2009 and September 2010, Ash digitally released twenty-six new singles at the rate of one a fortnight and they have all been collected in two volumes A-Z Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. I have to confess that, owing to poor fan reviews, I haven't yet bought Vol. 2, but any Ash fan really should own Vol. 1, because it is up there with their very best work. At the time, they also undertook a twenty-six date UK tour of places that followed the alphabet, which is documented in the accompanying DVD feature, A Is For Ash. Containing songs A to M in their series of alphabetical releases, there are also five other tracks, including an excellent Mark Hamilton composition, Return Of White Rabbit, the Alice In Wonderland-alluding heavy rocker with a White Stripes-esque guitar riff and the other 'B' sides that accompanied some of the single/EP releases.

The only problem with A-Z Vol. 1 is the length of the album; at around seventy minutes long, it really takes a lot of listening to in order to really appreciate everything on there. Around work commitments, I've been listening to A-Z Vol. 1 a lot over the last week (at least a dozen times) to really get to know it inside out and it's been a wonderful album to have on repeat play, so it isn't exactly a real problem! The quality across the whole release is extraordinary, though; these really do feel like a collection of singles as opposed to a studio album. Seriously, for anyone who wasn't familiar with Ash, this could easily pass as a greatest hits compilation, it's that good. True Love 1980 is a sparkling, romantic slice of indie-pop with lyrics as beautiful as the accompanying music and it's as good as anything Tim Wheeler has ever written. Joy Kicks Darkness is also tremendous; a supremely powerful track with an immense performance from all of the band and Arcadia is startlingly good, the kind of anthemic synth embellished rock song that could have been found on Muse's Black Holes & Revelations, albeit with a unique Ash character. There's a lighter touch on the lovelorn Tracers, a yearning song with an explosive chorus and The Dead Disciples is a sensational mix of a spiky, edgy rock verse and a harmony-drenched, spine-tingling orgasm of a chorus.

The first song on the album that feels a bit ordinary is Pripyat, but it's one of those slow-burning compositions that builds in stature throughout the piece; by the time it's over, it sounds like a work of genius that you feel ashamed for ever doubting. Another maddeningly catchy song is Ichiban, a bouncy, live-wire of a tune that boasts a “wo-oah” hook that sticks in your head long after the track has finished. There's a disco feel to Space Shot; tremendously infectious and complete with synths, handclaps and an eminently danceable groove. Neon, again, has a Muse-like vibe to it and has so many delicious chord changes that it's easy to get lost in it. Command quickly brings the listener out of their blissful state with a high-tempo, bouncing rocker and its catchy chorus, whereas Song Of Your Desire, an uncomplicated love song sounding like it could have been written in the late 1950s, is the first track on A-Z Vol. 1 to not actually sound like a good choice for a single; it's still very nice, though. Similarly, Dionysian Urge is a good album track, but doesn't quite meet the high standard set by the majority of the tracks thus far and War With Me is also rather ordinary but pleasant enough to listen to. There aren't any bad tracks on A-Z Vol. 1, but you can perhaps hear a little bit of writing fatigue creeping in towards the end.

The four tracks tagged onto the end include a Carly Simon cover, Coming Around Again, which really is terrific and Ash make it their own. The Creeps feels like the decent B-side material it is, Rick McMurray's CTRL-ALT-DEL is a very listenable song and Do You Feel It finishes the album on a high note, with another very lovely Tim Wheeler love song that features a tasteful saxophone solo by Daniel Rouleau. True, not many people would put Ash and saxophone solos together, but it really does complement the song perfectly. All-in-all, A-Z Vol. 1 is a remarkably good album, with only a slight dip in songwriting quality towards the end and is easily amongst Ash's very best work. For anyone whose Ash collection begins and ends with 1977 and/or Free All Angels, A-Z Vol. 1 is very highly recommended for those who have yet to discover how good the Northern Irish trio's work is beyond their most well-known cuts.

DVD review:

It's always good to have a full-length documentary that has obviously taken a lot of work to make as a bonus disc. Running at around fifty-one minutes, A Is For Ash is a very interesting and enjoyable record of their A-Z tour which saw them perform full live shows at twenty-six small venue UK dates in just over a month, from Aldershot (Hampshire) to Zennor (a village in Cornwall). It was certainly intriguing to see people talking about the future of music in 2009, about how the whole industry is changing and the move from physical product to streaming and downloading. It's also gratifying to be here seven years later and to see that albums are still important to people and still being released. It's incredible to witness just how hard they were working at that point in their careers and that they still had the hunger to push themselves. Seeing Mark Hamilton dealing with illness and separation from his young baby betrayed the rigours of intense touring, but, on the whole, the band seemed to be getting a real buzz from such a punishing challenge. My only minor moan with the DVD would be that there wasn't quite enough music for my liking, but there is a lovely acoustic version of Tracers by Tim Wheeler and Emmy The Great and an acoustic rendition of True Love 1980 by the whole band, with Rick McMurray on acoustic guitar instead of his usual drum kit. Add to that a couple of live performances of Joy Kicks Darkness and Space Shot and there is just enough music in there to animate what, otherwise, could have been a slightly dry documentary. I could have done without the scenes showing Mark vomiting into the toilet, but – looking back at the bonus track from the 1977 album – perhaps that was their own homage to their early days.

I don't normally bother writing CD reviews but I'll make an exception for this album which, as the other reviewers have correctly said contains some bloody good power pop gems. Lots of influences on this album but Ash are good enough to make these songs their own. It might be a cliche but it's albums like this (or collections of singles in this case) that restore your faith in popular music: there is still lots of good material out there, as this album proves. I bought this album cos it was cheap but now I'm going to buy Volume 2 to see if they can maintain this high standard. Well done lads!

What can I say. Ash have risen from the ashes!

Yes I subscribed to the digital download so I was there from the beginning. Every tune is worthy of being a classic anthem and the well matched lyrics just have to be listened to. How the much underrated Tim Wheeler (in the main) has produced quality in such sheer volume is unbelievable.

I have had to buy two copies of both Vol 1 and Vol 2 as I have two cars and cannot bear to be without my A-Z Ash fix when driving!

I never thought Ash were going to be able to quite live up to 1977, even though they've produced some great stuff over the years, and when the fabulous Twilight Of The Innocents wasn't the resounding success it deserved to be I feared that they may call it a day but this has done it - Ash are well and truly back. It's just a shame that the download concept has meant missing out on the major radio playlists and wider coverage that A-Z so deserves.

What next? Can't wait.
