カナダ出身の30歳。幼少からヴァイオリンを嗜み、11歳でオーケストラ・スコアを書き上げる等高いクラシックの
素養を持ちつつ、プログラミングやサンプリング技術等、ジャンルレスに音楽家としての技術を磨いてきた人。
前作までは「Final Fantasy」名義で作品を発表していた様だが、個人的には彼の作品初体験。

印象としては、簡単にジャンル分類の言葉が見つからない作品。

まず、彼のクラシックの高い教養が作品に活かされていることは分かり易い。例えば室内楽的な管弦楽器の
アレンジ能力の高さや、バックコーラスのオペラ的な風情に認められる。

しかし、単なるクラシックとポップスの融合という形容では足りない程、彼の紡ぐ音楽は多彩な要素を併せ持つ。

その要素の一つに、彼自身影響を認めているゲーム音楽がある。
具体的には、菅弦楽器の細々とした旋律の扱いや、巧妙にプログラミングされた音が非常に映像的であるところ。
一方でどこか閉塞的な感覚が作品全般に漂うところも、ゲーム音楽に親しんだ世代ならではの感覚か。
この感覚は的確に言葉にするのが難しいので、是非作品に接して体験していただきたい。ゲーム世代の方なら
共感して頂けると思う。

またそれらの音と、彼の内向的な表情を持つ歌声がうまく融合している。

ポップスにオーケストラを導入することで、クラシックの空気を取り入れた作品は数多あるが、ここまでクラシック
の要素が自然とポップスに入り込んだ作品は珍しい。幼少からクラシックに親しみ、同時にゲーム音楽も愛好し
たオーウェンにとっては自然な感覚なのだと思う。

これから彼のような新しい感覚を持った人が増えてくるのだろう。
2010年代の幕開けとして相応しい、知的だが嫌味の無い新鮮なポップスだ。

This is not an album for casual listening or background music. You have to give it a few listens, read along with lyrics, and then you'll be hooked.

It's hard to categorize this music. I became familiar with Owen Pallett through his incredible work on Beirut's The Flying Club Cup as well as his touring with The National. I was hoping to get more of his violin playing and arrangements and was fairly disappointed with the first listen. After setting it aside for a while, I decided to give it another chance and, thankfully, found the beauty and intelligence in Pallett's work. If ever an album was a creeper, this one is.

Many of the songs have a Weill/Brecht feel--more grounded in modernism with avant-garde theatrical touches. The juxtaposition of uncomfortable lyrics with the melodic music on the songs Lewis Takes Action and Lewis Takes Off His Shirt becomes addictive. You want the songs to go on longer. And I love the humor and political edge of Oh Heartland Up Yours! It is a much needed commentary of our nation's post September 11th psyche.

This is an album that deserves to be listened to in full during one sitting. It builds, it is infectious, it is a musical oasis for thinking persons in an age when banality thrives.

I saw the man live. He threw in some of his older "Sh**", which was fabulous as I'd not even heard of him until CBC radio 1 ("Q") had him on an interview. After the concert his songs stuck in my head until I HAD to buy the album. His website was sold out, so onto Amazon.ca. Personally, I prefer the simpler versions that he performed onstage, totally uplifting, an almost spiritual experience. The album is a grand journey where a lot more has been added. Simplicity is lost, but for someone who has not heard him live, this album will not let you down. It is a magical journey into a world of brand-new compositional styles.

Quite enjoyable.

Arrived in perfect condition.

As excellent as Heartland is, it's even better to finally have a CD/MP3 version of A Watery Day, one of the best B-Sides I ever heard. Adding the Exports EP makes this CD the best companion for any occasion.

With a little more than a month gone by its hard to believe that there could already be albums worthy of the label "album of the year," but this is certainly one of those albums. For any of those of you familiar with Owen Pallett's earlier work as Final Fantasy you will certainly not be disappointed. It simply eclipses all of his prior work while simultaneously recalling it. The stunning baroque pop heard throughout this album hearkens back to classical 60s pop, as well as Pallett's work with groups such as The Arcade Fire, Beirut, and Grizzly Bear. In less than an hour Pallett's song cycle ebbs and flows with the serene beauty of a babbling brook. If you love the work of bands such as these you will definitely enjoy this album, but if none of them appeal to you in someway then this album is not your cup of tea.
