'the defamation of strickland banks' are songs that tell the story of strickland banks, a sharp-suited British soul singer who finds fame with bitter-sweet love songs like 'love goes down' and 'writing's on the wall' but loses everything when he ends up in prison for a crime he didn't commit. It's as if marvin gaye went from his early motown love songs to 'what's goin' on' in just one album, then had it all remixed by London grime artists. Produced by paul epworth, the studio genius behind recent hits by florence & the machine, the big pink and friendly fires, Plan B's latest is a ferocious collision of retro soul, funk, rock and rap that sounds smokey robinson fronting rage against the machine.

他の方が言われているとおり、ケースが・・。外側は大丈夫でしたが、中央の固定する部分が割れているというか、中央のサイズの仕様がもともとおかしいのでは？
自分もアルファードのＣＭでShe Saidを気に入り、キュートな女性vocalとばかり思っていて、女性の声として自分的に完璧！（透明感とちょい崩れた感じとのバランスが見事）だったので、youtubeでlive映像を見て男性歌手だと知ってビックリ＆ちょっとガッカリ（笑）でしばらくご無沙汰していたのですが、久しぶりに思い出して、車で聞きたいなと思いＣＤ購入。他の曲も６０年代モータウンみたいなテイストあって、買って正解でした。
　こういう声質って、ボーイソプラノが声変わりせずにそのまま・・みたいな感じなんですかね。ラップ部分は普通に男性の声なので使い分けできるんでしょうね。youtubeのLIVE音源だと同一人物と納得いくのですが、CDでは別人にしか思えないです。ドライブ中は女性VOCALと思って聴いています。

ケース破損は、－４なんですが、☆は内容で評価しました。もっとたくさん入っているDeluxe CDもあるんですね・・コスパ的にDeluxeを買えば良かったかも知れない。

トヨタのアルファードのCMで一聴き惚れをして購入。
CMで使われてたshe said以外にも良曲が多くて驚きました。
ソウルっぽいところや、UKロックっぽいとこなど曲の引き出しが多く、声も曲に合わせて変化しているので飽きません。
CM聴いて「あ、いいな」と思った人は是非、アルバムで聴いてるください。

Ironically enough, it was a reality show that helped me make the link to Ben Drew and "Plan B", as well as this remarkable album. When the track, "Prayin'", was used as part of the soundtrack for the series MOB WIVES, I heard it and immediately had to find out where it came from. I had to prepare myself for another shock when I did: I remembered The Artist Known As "Plan B" from his riveting performance in the Michael Caine thriller HARRY BROWN, and in the Chase and Status music video that promoted the film, "End Credits." All of this led up to my encounter with STRICKLAND BANKS, which is arguably one of the best concept albums I have ever heard in recent memory.

The amazing thing is that even though I am aware of rap and a lot of rap artists from both the U.S. and the U.K., I have never been an avid fan of the genre, though I am attracted to the work of artists who seek to do something different with it, than the kind of stuff that caters to the usual stereotype. This album achieves that and so much more.

Written, produced and performed by Drew, it is basically a song cycle that tells the story of his alter ego, "STRICKLAND BANKS", a British white soul singer riding the crest of the retro-R&B wave stirred up by artists like Amy Winehouse and Adele. Something of a cad and a player, Strickland has the lilting voice of a latter-day Smokey Robinson and rap skills that recall early Eminem with a Northern English accent. Banks tells us, through a blend of rap and song, the story of how his excesses and transgressions result in his arrest and surprisingly, ultimate conviction for a crime he didn't commit, followed by his fall from grace into the lowest point of his life, both in and out of Bellmarsh Prison, and his struggle to reach some kind of redemption.

Cinematic and ambitious in scope, the album and the accompanying videos recall no less than the kind of vivid intensity that Alan Parker achieved decades ago, when he captured the essence of PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL. Drew has skilfully reached for and achieved that kind of memorable vibe, with a 'rap opera' that is accessible to both rap fans and lovers of the "new retro soul" movement of songwriting and performing. It's infinitely puzzling how the record company allowed a sterling opportunity to promote this album slip between their fingers. Perhaps an accompanying DVD collection of the well-produced videos that go with the album should have been in order, as a means of helping bring the songs to life more for potential fans and music lovers, who otherwise remain oblivious to the artistry and talent behind this underrated work. Stand-out tracks include the aforementioned "Prayin'", as well as "She Said", "Stay Too Long", "Welcome To Hell", and my overall favorite, the "WALL-esque" ode to Strickland's increasing feelings of isolation and paranoia, "The Recluse."

All in all, I highly recommend this album for anyone completely disenchanted by the "music" they're hearing these days...
