I`m very pleased to get this remastered CD edition of Bob Downes` 1970 album; I knew of Downes through his infrequent radio broadcasts on the BBC`s old “Jazz in Britain” series in the late 70s and got to see him live once in a rather disasterous concert in Glasgow in the early 80s.
This album is a very good showcase of his composing and arranging skills together with his exciting, virtuosic flute-playing; the extended ballet piece “Dream Journey” is the major track here scored for an ensemble made up of the cream of British jazz avant garde musicians and session players of the day.
Downes was quite a maverick performer working with a widely diverse range of groups and styles – he had a particular association with dance-groups, writing for many – and this is a good example of that.
There aren`t many of his albums available, so this is something of a treasure – get it while it`s available/affordable.
The CD has a playing time of 48.27 minutes; shame there are no sound samples available.
