John Scofield
John Scofield

Wunderbare Musik

Sehr empfehlenswerte Musik.

I've never heard a bad album from John Schofield

I've never heard a bad album from John Schofield. What is interesting about this piece it is like a concerto featuring Schofield on guitar. There are cuts where he solos with players from the orchestra. All the soloists are great improvisors.
Schofield played with Miles Davis. Schofield is one of the best improvisors for Jazz guitar.

bel disco,

Super-sized Sco'

Despite touring with a cracking band led by Mike Gobbs in the early 90's, there isn't a great deal on record of John Scofield playing in a big band context. This album features a 54-piece ensemble complete with strings backing the guitarist with the charts largely being provided by the ubiquitous Vince Mendoza.
On the face of things, the size of the ensemble would suggest that it is too unweldy to effectively swing but the results on first listen demonstrate that this couldn't be further from the case with the whole ensemble being incredibly nimble. Mendoza is master arranger and the charts are sufficiently well-orchestrated to be enjoyable whilst allowing Scofield and the other soloists to stretch out when required. As a composer, I've always been intrigued by Scofield. At first, there is the snaky funkiness in his writing which instantly appeals but closer listening has always seemed to me to reveal a real affinity with the music of Ornette Coleman - free funk if you want! As ever, Scofield has a good ear for a tune, even on the irresistably knotty "Polo Tower" or "Perculiar" which is my favourite on the whole disc and ballads like "Honest I do" demonstrate a more Romantic side. As ever, John Scofield's playing is a delight -the absolute filthiness of the tone he coaxes out of his guitar has long been one of the most agreable sounds in jazz during the last 25 years. I have been a fan ever since I first heard him play with Marc Johnson's "Bass Desires" and this CD was actually bought by me for my father for whom John Scofield is probably his favourite, contemporary jazz artist - a bit different from his usual choice of Duke, Basie or Lionel Hampton. The truth is that Scofield's music has universal appeal.
Where this stands in the pantheon of "Great" Sco recordings is hard to judge. The quartet with Lovano was something special and I have always had a soft spot with the disc where he locked axes with Bill Frisell. More lately, the collaboration with Medeski, Martin and Wood seems to have had a lasting influence on the older musician. However, "54" offers something different and gives the opportunity to hear so Sco' favourites cast in a new light thanks to some inspired orchestration by Mendoza. Despite the almost elephantine size of the orchestra, the band is sufficiently light on it's feet to pull the whole exercise off. Pitched somewhere between the shear entertainment of the Ray Charles tribute album and the undiluted jazz of the Blue Note quartet, it is not difficult to see why the record got Grammy nominated. This is one of the best Sco' discs for some while.

Sco's best for ages!

No need to dither about this one - immediate 5 stars. Mendoza is the finest arranger in modern jazz today, the Metropole Orkest are stunningly tight, an incredibly high standard, and Scofield solos as compellingly as ever. Exactly what you would expect, only better. 7 out of the 9 tracks are Scofield tunes which sound absolutely wonderful when expanded in Mendoza's arrangements. Tremendous; compared with Scofield's recent projects this is his best in a long while, and a very good example of how diligent and thorough preparation and rehearsal - completely necessary in an ensemble of this huge size - can make all the difference. 'Peculiar', originally on 'Groove Elation', is just superbly done. The Metropole Orkest is European (of course) and I honestly think that no American ensemble could have sounded any better, tighter, jazzier or more committed to the charts in front of them. A small point; Jim McNeely is credited with arranging tracks 9 and 10, however there are only 9 tracks on the CD so obviously one didn't make the final cut. Highly recommended; very enjoyable listening, and one of this century's finest modern jazz releases.
