Their most exhilarating work to date, The Savage Heart expands the sonic remit of The Jim Jones Revue beyond their renowned brand of manic rock ’n’ roll to explore a virtual “heart of darkness” of new musical territory in the form of tribal stomps, field hollers, a capella rave-ups -- even a fuzzed-out feedback-laden doo-wop ballad! The Savage Heart swaggers with all the balls-out rocking of its predecessors, but offers too an expansive vision of the band, with a wider palette of sounds and even socially conscious lyrics. “While the group look back into the roots of rock n’ roll, we’ve never gone backwards in what we do,” says Jim Jones. “It’s always about pushing things forward for us.”

An absolute killer band. Jim Jones has welded this five man band into a sonic rock all of sound. Henri Herbert's piano is probably the finest of its type playing in the UK today, his piano holds its own with Jim's wailing gravel grained blues shouter voice. Rupert Orton's guitar work holds the band at fever pitch and is never anything less than a perfect phrasing hammer to the records lyrics on songs like "Where'd the money go?". Nick Jones' drumming is just the right rhythm driver and each time I listen to the whole album I'm more impressed with how he blends power and an original power beat phrasing dimension into each track. Well produced and very well engineered album, each instrument and voice is clear, separate & well blended into the final sound. Not a good present for your local vicar but should impress most everybody else.

Not quite as 'jumpin' as the earlier recordings, but still a breath of fresh air. I guess the band is trying to progress....much more variety on this one. Still....all the tunes are really strong. Well worth the money.

3 éme album court ( 39 minutes 15 ) de la bande d ' allumés londoniens , avec coté personnel un nouveau pianiste , coté enregistrement , un nouveau producteur et un ingénieur valorisant le son toujours aussi rock n roll revival , de notre quintet qui curieusement se dévoile photogéniquement par un cliché du groupe arpentant , d ' un pas vif , le chemin de halage d ' un canal , jouxtant une raffinerie trés grise , sur un ciel sombre .
Ce nouveau graphisme de la pochette pourrait nous faire croire à un virage musical , pour un rock plus sombre , plus hard que Nénni !

Les conseils avisés d ' une production efficace propulse la voix de JIM JONES , aidé sur certains titres par ses acolytes chantant comme un kop aviné de foot , vers un pub rock , environné d ' un tapis de guitares ( sans saturation , ni distorsion étouffant le son ) ou la fulgurance des riffs , entrecoupés de superbes solos , se confronte au piano rock n' rollesque introduisant pratiquement tous les titres , sans oublié la prédominence de la pulsion insistante de la basse et de la batterie , clairement enregistrée , parentes oubliées des précédents albums .

Edulcorant l ' apreté du son garage originel des deux premiers albums , le goupe s ' oriente , vers un pub-rock moins échevelé ( WHERE DA MONEY GO ? ), teinté de punk , ressemblant étrangement à la fusion de l ' influence des frimeurs flamboyants s ' acoquinant , avec ce regrétté bon docteur , pétri de bons sentiments .

Originalité d ' un rock revival éffréné , sans reprises , moins traditionnel , plus proche de l ' exubérance musicale d ' un SCREAMIN JAY HAWKINS ( CHAIN CHANG ) , rocker iconoclaste , notre quintet lorgne aussi sur le heavy rock industriel typiquemnt américain ( MC5 voir STOOGES ) .
Puis sans vergogne , pour clore l ' album , JIM JONES s ' autorise à chanter une suave ballade , digne d ' un orchestre scolaire , invité pour faire danser , à la féte de fin d ' année d ' un lycée . ( Ah ce coté rétro AMERICAN GRAFFITI )

Que ce groupe singulier , amalguamant plusieurs influences , continue à explorer tous les courants du rock Sixties ou Séventies , pour perpétuer , l ' outrance de cette musique , immortalisée par , ELVIS , JERRY LEE et LITTLE RICHARD , adeptes du piano boogie .
