Not sure how I have overlooked the Futureheads previously. I only recently stumbled across them by chance, when I was researching the bands playing Reading, as my daughter was attending. I haven't heard their earlier stuff so cannot make any comparisons but this album is really good. Album opens with the title track, which has a strong late 70's/early 80's feel (which runs through most of the album) but doesn't sound dated at all. I'd also liken this album to Boy Kill Boy's first album (very prominent drum/percussion) which is an absolute classic and one of my favourites of the last 10 years.
Heartbeat Song, which was released as the first single from the album and just sneaked into the Top 40, is a good track, but doesn't stand out above others - there are so many good tracks. The Connector is a memorable track - you'll either love it or hate it, but you will sing along to it! I Can Do That was the second single but failed to trouble the chart record keepers - and ends with a line made famous by Orville!! The Sun Goes Down is my favourite on the album - I think it stands out as a single and am surprised they haven't released it - good changes in tempo, catchy chorus, works for me. One other track deserves mention - This is the Life is probably the track that sums up the album, energetic, pacy, strong back beat and catchy/chant-type lyric. I'll be definitely buying some of the earlier albums - I hope they're as good as this, and I want to go and see them live, I'm sure they're excellent.

Vier Alben haben die Futureheads mittlerweile produziert. Aber kann sich irgendwer an die beiden Platten nach dem Debüt erinnern? "News and Tributes" und "This Is Not the World" hießen die. Und selbst die Titel sagen mir nichts mehr. Das ist bei "The Chaos" anders - schon alleine aus dem Grund, weil ich mir die Platte gekauft habe und sie jetzt im CD-Schrank steht. Aber hole ich sie da jemals wieder raus? Ehrlich gesagt: Das habe ich beim Debüt schon selten gemacht. In einem Jahr, in dem so viel gute Musik rausgekommen ist, ist die Platte bei mir damals ein wenig untergegangen. Und das gleiche Schicksal wird wohl auch "The Chaos" treffen.
Obwohl die Platte nicht schlecht ist. Natürlich gibt es kein "Hounds of Love" mehr, die Band hat sogar mit "Heartbeat Song" und "I Can Do That" zwei Stücke geschrieben, die fast peinliche Rocksongs geworden wären. Aber eben nur fast, denn den Futureheads gelang es tatsächlich, dass diese beiden so unaufgeregten Stücke mit zu den Höhepunkten der Platte gehören. Neben "Struck Dumb" und dem düsteren "Sun Goes Down".
Weniger gelungen sind hingegen diese nervös vor sich hinplärrenden Rock-Dinger. "The Connector" ist sooooo 2005! "This Is the Life" und "The Baron" sind eigentlich zumindest mittelmäßig, haben aber zwischendurch so doofe Gitarrensounds, dass sie eben doch nerven. Textlich befindet sich die Band ein wenig auf dem Therapeuten-Trip. Sie geben Ratschläge, wie man eben aus dem Chaos ausbrechen kann. Nun gut.

This is the Futureheads fourth album. If you liked the previous 3 then you'll definitely like this one. It's not quite a return to the 'angular pop' that worked so effectively on the first album but instead represents a natural maturation in their song writing ability. Consequently, this work contains some of their strongest material yet.
Note that there is a hidden track after 'Jupiter' and that there is another album version out there (see HMV) that contains 2 additional tracks. and Youth is also once again at the controls on this CD. Buy this album and then look forward to the next one.
