You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me)は、英国人が勝手に言うところのノーザンソウルというやつで、本来ならカップリングにあたるHeaven's Will (Must Be Obeyed)ともどもアリスのボーカルも含め充実した出来です。

Amazing Alice Clark- A Hidden gem
I came across Alice Clark completely by accident and I'm glad that I did. this 16 track CD of her complete recordings from 1968-1972. Alice Clark, from Brooklyn, NY, had a sound that was a mixture between Kim Weston, Brenda Holloway, and a touch of Aretha here and there. It may be this mixture of sounds which made it hard for her to be marketed; no one knew what to do with her. Her sound could best be described as a mixture of soul, R&B, and jazz with some of the songs standing out more than others. The opener that showed a lot of promise "You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me", sounds slightly Motown and reminds me at times of Kim Weston. "Don't You care" produced by Booby Hebb of "Sunny" fame, is an upbeat soulful song that is catchy and danceable. "You Got A Deal" which has a real southern soul flavor is followed by the blues/Jazz swinging tune "Charms Of The Arms Of Love." Alice gives cabaret tune "Maybe This Time" a soulful touch that makes the song sound more blues than cabaret. Jimmy Webb's "I Keep It Hid" was wonderfully done by Mary Wilson, but Alice manages to take a more blues/gospel approach and makes it hers. "Looking At Life", originally a song by Petula Clark, works well with Alice's soulful interpretation. "Don't Wonder Why" by Motown songwriter Leonard Castro is another favorite of mine; Alice manages to tell a story with passion, melody and strong vocals that makes you pay attention to the lyrics. The final standout for me is the gut wrenching "It Takes Too Long To Live Alone" arranged by the amazing Ernie Wilkins.
Alice Clark may not be name many people remember, nor did she have chart success, however she is well worth listening to and had quite an effect on London's Northern Soul circuit. Many of her sides were quite popular in the UK, with albums (mint copy) selling for as much as 100 pounds. Unfortunately Alice Clark passed away in April of 2004, but her music and sound will live on forever. Why not give it a listen? If you like singers who can sing a song with passion, then you will like Alice Clark: The Complete Studio recordings 1968-1972.

File alongside Roberta Flack's debut
Unarguably, this disc contains one of the finest Soul long-players - file alongside Roberta Flack's debut, or Marvin Gaye's 'Whats going on'.
Add some very nuanced arrangments (the lifeblood of soul music), and some vital playing (jazz players hinting at ripping things up)and you have a marriage of the best from both Philly Soul (sweeping strings; lavish grooves), and Deep Soul (gospel rawness; adult emotions).
This is the pinnacle release from Mainstream Records - an artist owned Soul-Jazz label notable for releasing a Soul record by no less than Sarah Vaughan (her cover of 'innercity blues', complete with multi-tracked voice parts almost eclipses Marvin Gaye's original). Mainstream also did its fair share of novelty records and instumental soul covers, but Alice Clark shows here what a Strata East label dedicated to Soul Music might have sounded like.
One criticism I do have is that while all the bonus tracks are welcome, they have carved-up the original track sequence such that the ambience of the recordings jumps back and forth. The correct sequence for your i-pod:
I keep it hid
Looking at life
Don't wonder why
Maybe this time
Never did I stop loving you
Charms of the arms of love
Don't you care
It takes too long to learn to live alone
Hard hard promises
Hey girl

Blistering funk/soul/jazz hybrid from 1972
The expression, "You can't judge a book by its cover," has never been more applicable than in the case of this album. In other words, if you're expecting to sit back and chill to some mellow R&B ballads, you may end up getting blown into the next room.
From the first note, this thing is an all-out fusion attack of horns, drums, and keys, and the bass player (sadly, no musician credits are included) is on a mission from God. Absolutely relentless. As for Clark, it's hard to believe the somber woman in the photograph is the same one singing on the record. Her voice is so aggressive it should be registered as a lethal weapon. It's pretty weird too, very staccato and aspirated, but it fits the music. She gets a little pitchy in spots, but it seems as if the producers were willing to sacrifice perfection to capture her raw emotion. And it is raw. Autotune will never replace soul.
"Alice Clark: The Complete Studio Recordings 1968-1972" comprises the singer's self-titled 1972 album originally released on the Mainstream label, as well as five prior tracks recorded for other labels in the late `60s, and an instrumental. Unfortunately, none of her singles charted, and Clark's music was forgotten until the early 1990s, when British record collectors discovered it and turned it into a club hit.
The mastering from Beat Goes Public, the label that released the CD, is excellent. It's punchy and clean and sounds much better than most pop or soul albums from that era typically sound on disk. My only complaint is that they changed up the song order, interspersing the earlier singles with the album cuts. I'm not sure why. Most of those early numbers are mellower and not as strong from a songwriting standpoint, so I'd just as soon push them to the end as bonus tracks.
The standouts are all from the LP and include the acid jazz-flavored "Don't You Care," the melodic but fast-paced "Never Did I stop Loving You," and the aptly titled "Hard Hard Promises."
Sadly, Alice Clark seems to have disappeared after the album initially bombed. As of 2010, when the CD's liner notes were written, her whereabouts are unknown and she is untraceable. Consider her yet another terrific soul singer from the late 60s who got lost in the shuffle of fickle public taste.
