Paul Davis' most overlooked album
Although primarily remembered today for several successful singles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Paul Davis released a series of quality albums during the 1970s that somehow flew beneath the radar. Wounded Bird has finally given these albums their due with long-awaited releases on CD. It was definitely worth the wait.
Davis' first album, A Little Bit of Paul Davis (1970), received favorable reviews for its tight and catchy writing and melodies. Although it spawned a couple of minor radio-friendly hits, the album went largely unheard. Although that might be the kiss of death for a recording artist these days, back in the 1970s artists were given the chance to develop over several albums. Davis' second album, the self-titled Paul Davis (1972) [not to be confused with his 1980 album, also entitled Paul Davis ], showed what a little seasoning could do for his pop voice. This album is chock full of one memorable tune after another. "What Would We Do Without Music" leads off the album with a fun, easygoing tribute to the songs that bind couples together. As stated in the lexicon of the day (which might be misconstrued by the ears of a younger generation), "what we would we do without a song to get off on?"
"Love Don't Come Easy" is a charmingly soft ditty that sees Davis use the upper end of his vocal range to good effect. "Boogie Woogie Man" benefits from a freewheeling back beat and a fun jab at people who pressure natural-born musicians to go get a degree and become doctors or lawyers. "Dream Of A Dreamer" is a laid-back but mesmerizing pop gem with light R&B-tinged backing vocals. "Gotta Find My Way Back" shows how Paul Davis can build an effective rock song around a strong central hook. Perhaps the highlight of the album is "Keep Our Love Alive," a mid-tempo love song that has an energetic and appealing refrain. Although the record stiffed at the time, it was good enough for Bang! Records to re-release this single in remixed form in 1975 on the heels of the successful "Ride 'Em Cowboy" single. This time, the song charted, showing that sometimes, the second time around is a charm.
If this isn't enough of a reason to pick up this album, Wounded Bird added TEN bonus tracks, many of them unreleased, like the instantly enchanting "Missing You," or previously relegated to B-sides. Among the unreleased tracks are three recorded between 1984 and 1987, after Davis had recorded his last album, Cool Night (1982), but before his brief resurgence in the country genre with chart-topping duets with Marie Osmond and Tanya Tucker.
Don't let this gem slide by. It may very well be Paul Davis' best in a string of underrated albums.

Excellent, love Paul's music. A good friend and very talented singer/songwriter! A great talent was lost when he passed on!!!!!!!
The CD arrived today in great condition and I have enjoyed every minute of listening to it! Ordered it just a few days ago. Good people to do business with. Very prompt at getting it out to you. Will do more business with them if they have the music I'm looking for!
