2010 debut album from singer/songwriter Rumer, the follow-up to her successful EP, Slow. Musically, Seasons of My Soul is influenced by Rumer's upbringing, which takes in a childhood spent in an enclosed, exotic expat colony in Pakistan. Here, her family would often sing and write songs together, determined to provide their own entertainment in the absence of TV or newspapers. Then, they relocated to the New Forest, where Rumer first saw a television, and married her love of the Folk tradition with the sweeping melodies of the technicolor movie musicals. It is a blissful harmony, which you can hear in the likes of 'Slow' and 'Come to Me High'.

女性ボーカルのしっとりしたものが好きなのですが、アルバムジャケットを見ただけで何種類もの印象的なメロディーが浮かぶ程、これは本当によく聴きます。過去１０年の中でも指折りの名盤だと思っています。

パキスタン生まれのシンガーソングライター、ルーマーのデビューアルバム「Seasons Of My Soul」は、
オリジナル曲11曲中10曲までがルーマーの自作品か共作、残り1曲がデビット・ゲイツの作品。
その他にボーナス・トラックとしてバート・バカラックの「Alfie」、
スティーブン・ビショップの「It Might Be You(君に想いを)」、
サンドパイパーズの「Come Saturday Morning」の3曲を取り上げている。

アルバムは「時代を越えて愛される本物の音楽を作り聴いてもらうのが目標」と彼女自身が語っているように
そのサウンドはあくまでもシンプルで、60〜70年代のポップス、ソフト・ロックを想い起こさせる。
よく、カレン・カーペンターやキャロル・キングが引き合いに出されるがそれも納得の《歌声》だ。
彼女のソングライターとしての実力も見逃せない。
シングルの「Slow」や「Aretha」、そして中でも音楽で生きていこうと決心した時に作ったという
「Blackbird」や「On My Way Home」は秀逸だ。

31歳という年齢がそうさせるのか長い下積み生活で培った自信がそうさせるのかデビュー・アルバムにして
この落ち着きは並みの新人でない事は確か。しばらくは、ただ彼女の歌声に癒されている事にしよう。

聴くたびにどんどん新しい魅力が見つかるとても不思議な感覚がします。
曲やアレンジなど取り立てて新しいところはない、そんな当たり前のＰＯＰアルバムです。
初めは何か色々なことやらせ過ぎかなぁ・・・なんて感じましたが、聴くほどに見事な統一感のある
アルバムに思えてきました。

やはり彼女の声の力ですね！この柔らかで少しハスキーでありながら、時折見せる艶やかさにハッとさせられます。
そして何といってもこのリラックスした感じ！！本当に新人なの？？
バッキングのフリューゲルホーンやギターもうまく溶け合って極上のリラックス感を醸し出しています。
バックボーカルの入れ方とかＵＫっぽくてそういえば近頃あまりＵＫＰＯＰＳ聴いていなかったなぁ・・・何か懐かしい感じとか思ってしまいました。
あまり無理やり突飛なことはして欲しくないなんて個人的には思ってしまいますが、でも彼女の声の可能性はそんな想いも軽く凌駕してしまいそうな気も・・・

何でしょう？全然ジャンルも違うのですが私の中ではリヴィングストン・テイラー的なシンガーになるのかな？？
新作に新しさを期待しているわけではないけれども、その声、その歌に無性に浸りたくなってしまう。そうしてずるずると新譜を買い続けてしまう。
一作だけで既にそんな気がしてしまうなんてそうそう経験がありません。

日本盤のボーナストラックはなくてもいい気がするので私は輸入盤をお薦めします。お買い得ですしね。

雨が降りそうで、降らない、曇り空を思わせます。丁度今日はそんな日。カレン カーペンターを、おとなしくした感じ。曲は全体的にスローテンポで、子守唄代わりに、タイマーなどかけて眠る前に聴くと、良いかも知れません。

ゆったりと穏やかな時間が流れていく。その時間の中には、歩き慣れた散歩道に季節を見つけたような心温まる何かがある。

空間や時間を音楽と共に彩っていきたい人ならきっと常に手の届くところにこのCDを置きたくなるだろうし、そうじゃなくとも通勤中や家の掃除中等のふとした時にふと口ずさみたくなるような、日常に溶け込んで緩めるところを緩めてくれる貴重な存在になるだろう。
何もかもが加速していく中、あなたの散歩道にはどんな季節が訪れていますか？
このCDと共に探しに行ってみてはいかがでしょう

P.S.ボーナストラックの"It Might Be You"はこのアルバムの中で1番もしくは2番に好きな曲なので、この"Seasons Of My Soul"を購入しようと思われている方は是非ボーナストラックが付いているバージョンの方をお勧めします。多少値段は動いても、必ずそれ以上の価値が見いだせると思います。

Sixties inspired songs and arrangements by a singer whose voice is the perfect instrument for these compositions. Gorgeous, recalling a time when pop music had melody and a sense of basic craftsmanship that is so lacking today.

She's been a drama teacher,washed hair and fixed Ipods. Not the usual resume' for budding musical talent in the day and age of reality TV still hanging on for dear life. And her back story,including a sad little adventure to discover her half English/half Pakistani heritage,is very compelling. Never the less she'd been gigging around London for awhile now,singing and playing her own original songs on her guitar. Eventually she attracted the attention of Burt Bacharach,was signed to Atlantic Records with her own small accompanying group and was off and running. Somehow between the somewhat sudden passing of Amy Winehouse and the unexpected rise of fellow Englishwoman Adele,this woman whose true name is Sarah Joyce became successful mainly in Europe. As if this writing her fate in the US is being determined. But thanks to this website and it's stock of import CD's,I was able to check out the music of this lady who had me and my entire family talking for awhile now.

On this album we're welcomed into the musical world of an undeniably talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. Influenced very heavily by the Northern Soul revival that has as it's mentors people such as Dusty Springfield as well as US practitioners of the sound such as Jackie DeShannon,this lady adds another very unique dimension to her music. The album is full of tales of reflection and forgiveness for one's human vulnerabilities starting right off the bat with "Am I Forgiven" on through "Slow",Take Me As I Am","Saving Grace","Healer","Blackbird" and "Goodbye Girl". Of course the standout to me as "Aretha",singing of the Queen Of Soul herself and the comfort Miss Joyce gathers from that music. While the group is small and the tempo is often medium to low,this isn't a torchy album. The band have a big sound based more on the style in which they play their instruments,rather than the size of the band itself. And Rumer's voice,while soft and seductive has a sassy fireyness to it as well. And the overall effect is intended as welcoming rather than too easy or soothing.

Now truth be told this and other albums like it won't be everybody's cup of tea. While soulful and jazzy in many ways,Rumer takes to heart something Miles Davis once said about how he decided to make music. She "tugs at your ear a little softer". But her expressive voice,powerful songwriting and poetic lyrics will do plenty of tugging. She definitely doesn't so directly to be easy listening or retro soul or modern pop. Or really anything for that matter. It's just one of those things you have to hear. She has influences for sure. And often wheres them on her sleeve. But she's not in anyway bound to one or the other. There's a lot of room-from the instrumentation to the writing for creative growth and expansion. Because of the talent she demonstrates her I hope for her to continue going in the direction of creative vision in the spirit of people such as Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell,the closest two American's I can think of with any relation to her sound. If one is connected in any way with her influences and her approach this album has a lot of great musical possibilities to offer.

Habe die Künstlerin und Ihre Band anlässlich einer Aufzeichnung von SWR3 late-night in Baden-Baden live erlebt ... mit dem Ergebnis, dass ich die CD gleich am nächsten Tag bei AMAZON gekauft habe (und das, obwohl ich eigentlich überhaupt keine Frauensingstimmen mag!). Die CD ist keine Überraschungsrakete! Alle Titel sind durchgängig im sanften, unaufgeregten Stil zu hören, der sich mit 'slow' schon angekündigt hat, Sensationen fallen aus; positiv formuliert: Die Künstlerin bleibt sich treu. Mir gefällt's sehr! Schöne Musik mit flow und groove, der man aufmerksam zuhören und trotzdem gedanklich unterwegs sein kann ... Wer es entspannt mag, wird sich von Rumor angenehmst begleitet fühlen!
