Weezer at their Best!

I listened to a few tracks on line before I bought this album....and I liked the little bit I heard..I did not want another lousy WEEZER album....and this is SO GOOD! This album is well written..from the heart songs...that I expect from Weezer. The guitar hooks are everywhere on this album...add in Rivers voice and a real strong performance by the entire band...and this is a totally awesome sounding album.
And there is even a wicked cover of Tony Braxton's 'Unbreak My Heart'.

Odds & ends

I read on Wikipedia that this 2010 album from alternative power-pop band Weezer is a compilation of previously unreleased tracks, spanning 1993 to 2010. And it is a very good album. The songs, except for one surprising cover, were written or co-written by lead vocalist Rivers Cuomo. Their structure, along with the production, is tight, catchy and conventional enough to be good mainstream music, but diverse enough to be interesting, including some ear-pleasing chord changes, creative bridges and a dash of techno in "Autopilot". Rivers Cuomo is way more than a proficient lead guitarist, using different styles for different tracks. I hear standard metal solos, crunchy classic rock power chords, a little grunge, some 60's psychedelic and a soft, melodic solo in "Losing My Mind". The tracks vary in intensity. Some feature the "chugging" sound that I like in rock music. The strongest tracks musically are "Turning Up The Radio", "I Don't Want Your Loving", "Odd Couple", "Autopilot" and "Everyone", which is the "hardest" track, with a bottom layer sounding a little like Led Zeppelin. Two tracks are in contrast to the overall general sound. "Losing My Mind" is slow and confessional, and "I'm A Robot" is fast and SOUNDS happy, but more about that later. The big surprise to me is "Unbreak My Heart" which was a humongous hit for R&B diva Toni Braxton. I love her version and I am happy to say that Weezer's cover is also excellent, following the original arrangements of her recording, including the vocal.
The lyrics deal mostly with the few rewards and many tribulations of living, working and having relationships in a frequently joyless society. "Turning Up The Radio" is one of the pleasures: "Let the music play...It's the rock, it's the roll/It's the pop, it's the soul/It's the funk, it's the hip hop". There's also a bit of happiness for "The Odd Couple". After listing the ways they are not alike, the singer admits "But we are so happy in everything we do...Anyone can see we ain't two peas in a pod...I think it's workin' baby, that's the point I'm tryin' to make". BUT, so much for happiness. In "I Don't Want Your Lovin", the singer "...won't be a number on your list/I have too much pride to go for this...You can pack it up". At first, having a job is rewarding in "Blowin' My Stack", but the glow wears off: "Your heart is beating but you wind up dead/'Cause you can't feel any love inside". There's more about the mind-numbing world of work in the upbeat (musically) "I'm A Robot": "I ride the train to work every day/I reach my cubicle about 9 A.M./I have to earn money to pay my bills/But I don't know how my life turned out this way". In "Losing My Mind", we find a character who is out "Looking for action, totally wasted and trying to find a date...I have to lie down/Right here on the sidewalk...life means nothing anymore". Some of the other songs ("Everyone", "Trampoline" and "Autopilot") have lyrics that are not quite as obvious, but their general tone is negative and despairing. However, while these lyrics might make you think the album would be depressing, it really isn't. The musical arrangements serve to lighten the mood enough to avoid that.
