70年代末から80年代初頭にかけての、あの「New Waveのカッコ良さ」を今も体現しているのは。
他のほとんどのバンドは、例え延命していても全盛期の素晴らしさには遠く及ばない。例外はBuzzcocksくらいか。

しかし７の疾走感溢れるカッコ良さはどうだ？
まるで「154」期のお蔵入り音源と言われても信用できるクオリティーじゃないか。
３、１０、１１に見られる彼ら特有の、乾いた／透明な叙情性にも耳を奪われる。
そう、彼らは文章化される際、やたら「実験的」とか「前衛的」みたいな形容をされるが、
それと同じくらいの優れた叙情性を当時から持ち合わせたバンドだったのだ。

今後もこのクオリティーを維持して活動を継続してくれることを切望する。

復活ワイアーの3作目。ブルース･ギルバートが抜けた分、コリン･ニューマンのメロディセンスが前面に出てきており、そこに低音を強調した音響工作が加わって、それなりに聴き応えのある佳作が生まれました。雰囲気としては、“A bell is a cup until it is struck”や“It's beginning to and back again”の頃に近い感じです。

昔、ソニック･ユースを聴いたときに、「なんや、ワイアーそっくりやんけ」と思ったことがあります。ずっとマニアックなバンドだと思っていたのですが、本当にいろんなバンドに影響を与えているんですね。次はどういう方向に行くのかなぁ？　ブルースは戻ってこないのかなぁ？　ま、これからも、気まぐれかつ継続的に活動してください。

面白いおっさんというのは大概、若い頃から面白い。しかも今日昨日、面白くなった
訳ではないので、面白さが円熟している。ワイアーもそんな人達じゃないだろうか。
離合集散を繰り返しつつも３０年以上続くとは誰も予想しなかっただろう。そして
今作に至っては「軽み」まで獲得した。
はっきりいってここ数年のオルタナなギターロックのベストだと思う。今までワイアー
を聞いたことのない人達には、ポストパンクの大御所なんて前置きは別にして、新人
バンドでも聞く気持ちで聞いてほしい。
それにしてもこのアルバムのドラムはいい。これぞロックバンドのドラムの音である。

ベクトルの転換：重心を低くした力強さと叙情性の導入

　クールな知性にパンクの激しさを内包した前二作とはまた違ったベクトルの一枚が届いた。

　英語メディアでは名作「154」を引き合いに出されることが多いようだが、あの作品の重要な要素であった暗さや素朴さとは無縁なアルバムである。勿論、ベテランにありがちな、「昔の音に戻ってみました」というような真似は、アイデア豊富なこの人達は絶対にやらないので、旧作を引き合いに出すのは個人的にはどうかと思う。

　さて、オンライン雑誌「The Quietus」でのインタビューによれば、前二作が彼ら曰くカット＆ペーストで作り込まれた作品であることに対し、本作は歌詞やマテリアルをほぼ完成させてから持ち寄り、リハをやりながらメンバー間の化学変化によって作り込んでいくという、オーソドックスな作り方に戻したという。「ブルース・ギルバートのいない穴」というのは未だにメンバー間で意識されているようだが、その穴を埋めるべくゲストを迎えて作った前作と違い、本作はコリン・ニューマンがギタリストとして頑張り切ることで、「今、3人でやれること」に焦点を合わせた作り方となった。結果的にWireの核（＝インタビューでは「soul）という言葉を彼らは多様している）を再確認しつつ前作からまた進化するという、驚くべき成果を挙げることに彼らは成功している。

　音的には前作同様ロック寄りで、初期を髣髴とさせるアート・パンクも混じっている。だが、前二作より楽器個々の生々しい音を活かしている点、ずっしりとした質感のミディアム・テンポの曲が目立つ点、そして何よりも叙情性の導入に成功した点が、本作のポイントとなるだろう。勿論、コリン＆グラハム節、冷やっとした音響工作は健在である。

　前二作の強いビートに熱狂した僕だが、落ち着いた足取りで静かに力強さと知性が伝わってくる「2011年型Wire」もビンビンに刺激的だ。

Dieci anni... il tempo che ci ho messo a decidermi a fare mio questo album. Il motivo è semplicissimo. Sono fermamente convinto che con i loro primi tre album i Wire abbiano scritto le regole base del punk e del post punk e che nel triennio 1977-1979 fossero una delle band più innovative e geniali in circolazione.
Ma quello che è arrivato dopo "154" non mi aveva certo fatto impazzire e le loro derive elettroniche mi avevano lasciato perplesso.
Ma poi, ovunque leggi che quello che hanno fatto i Wire dal loro prepotente ritorno nel 2003 con "Send" è assolutamente degno di nota e di grande valore e allora la curiosità alla fine ha vinto.
E ho iniziato con questo "Red barked tree" del 2011, osannato in ogni dove.
Cosa ho trovato? Beh per cominciare sgombriamo ogni dubbio riguardo al fatto che questi Wire competono con i Wire degli esordi. Siamo su pianeti diversi, lontanissimi, stilisticamente e qualitativamente. Quei Wire sono irripetibili e irraggiungibili. Punto. E poi manca un certo Bruce Gilbert e la cosa non è da poco.
Ma questo è un signor disco. Bello. Molto bello. Lasciamo perdere termini come punk e post punk una buona volta.... si è vero la band riesce ad avere ancora un tiro potente e nervoso quando vuole, ma in ogni brano è evidente una vena melodica marcata. Una bella vena melodica, di quelle che ti entrano immediatamente in testa e dopo un paio di ascolti ti ritrovi a fischiettare queste melodie. In questo album non c'è un pezzo che non sia degno di nota e quando la band si ricorda del suo glorioso passato e tira rasoiate come solo loro sapevano fare, beh li è delizia pura. E bisogna ammettere che questo connubio tra melodie pop e irruenza punk ha il suo fascino.
E diciamolo subito... se questo album fosse stato fatto da una band esordiente sarebbero stati tutti genuflessi a gridare al miracolo. Ma questi sono i Wire, loro non fanno miracoli ma semplicemente splendido ultra pop vitaminico.

Wire became punk sensations, at least on the underground level, with their first and second albums, "Pink Flag" and "Chairs Missing", two of the most exciting fresh rock and roll albums ever. It was obvious this band was no one trick pony and they quickly changed gears, becoming almost Europop ala The Cure for "The Ideal Copy", punk-industrial for the superb "Send", and on "Red Barked Tree" they fall somewhere just past "154", a moody guitar overdriven masterpiece that followed "Chairs Missing", and "The Ideal Copy", with a driving sound but also ethereal, particularly the title track. Atmospheric tunes give the album the buoyant feel, and the understated vocals nearly hypnotize.
Like lots of other underground bands, it's puzzling why Wire didn't score some huge hits, but post punkers know how great they still are, and thanks to a loyal fan base, they're allowed to continue.

Wire est un groupe dont se réclame par exemple TV on the Radio. C'est dire l'aura de ce groupe sur la scène Rock internationale. Et c'est vrai qu'à l'écoute de cet album, on comprend mieux pourquoi. Leur musique est juste imparable. Sur Red Barked Tree, les morceaux se suivent et nous sommes sous le charme sans discontinuer. Aucune faute de goût, aucune longueur. Le Rock de Wire est concis, précis et donne une pêche d'enfer. Dès l'entame, on est sous le charme de cet équilibre entre fragilité sonore et puissance contenue. D'ailleurs l'album monte crescendo et la deuxième partie est nettement plus énervée (certains diront peut être plus conventionnelle). Wire est à découvrir, à écouter. Ce groupe ne fera sans doute jamais les couvertures des magasines, les néons de la gloire vont certainement oublier de les éclairer, mais nous savons maintenant que ce quatuor est capable de faire de l'ombre à beaucoup d'autres.

Bloody Hell, this is good. If, like me, you lost touch with wire after their first 3 brilliant albums, then hesitate not, buy this album now cos' it stands along those albums like it's 1980 all over again. I cannot vouch for the quality of their numerous albums in the intervening years, as for some unknown reason Wire dropped off my radar, but hell they have returned with a vengeance and vigour which belies their advancing years. If it wasn't for their unmistakable style, you would have sworn this album was by some snotty delinquent estuary yoofs, not a bunch of late 50's veterans. If anything the added maturity has actually improved on their 70's output by fleshing the songs to 4mins plus instead of the short 1'30" blast of yesteryear.
This has to be one of the albums of the year, but doubt that it will appear on any awards list. Doesn't mean you can't award yourself a real treat. Put it in the car CD player and risk a speeding ticket, it gives you that kind of adrenalin rush.

I loved the first three Wire albums and felt priviledged to hear their transformations on subsequent releases. I just wanted to hear a couple splendid Wire songs when I purchased this CD, but on repeated listens I found this album to embody everything that makes Wire special, erudite lyrics, wonderful vocal melodies and a musical atmosphere to die for. Every song fits perfectly on this CD to make a perfect whole that I have treasured and will treasure even more then Wire's initial jewels. If you are so stuck in time that you can't enjoy this more then Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, or 154 I feel sorry for you. I highly recommend this CD to savor repeatedly. A masterpiece.
