前作で遂にマーキュリー賞まで受賞してしまった、本国では言わずと知れた国民的バンドの5thアルバム。
DOVESと同じく、随分昔から「本国では国民的バンド」と紹介されながらも派手さが無いからか日本では知名度が低いバンド。

今作でも今までと同様、Guy Garveyの味わい深いヴォーカルを堪能することができるし、
深いメランコリーを湛えた楽曲、パワフルで渋いロックナンバーなどを楽しむ事ができる。
ストリングスの使い方も流石はベテランといった感じで決して安易なものではない。

今までと異なる点は全体的にポップの割合が増していることである。
賞を受賞した事によって多くの人に届くことを意識したのか、
過去の作品に時折現われていた、彼ら独特のアクが強くとっつきにくい楽曲(特に1st)が見事に姿を消した。
これを妥協ととれなくもないが、バンドの現在までの道のりを知っている人であれば決して批判するような所ではなく、
ソングライティング面での成熟ととることができる。
正直なところ、今まで大好きな楽曲は数あれど、アルバムを通して聴き込んだものは一つもなかった。
アルバム全編で満足したのは今作が初めてである。
よって、勿体無いが初めてこのバンドを聴くのであれば本作が一番適当であると思う。
初心者にもファンにも納得の1枚。

個人的なベストトラックは2ndのGrace Under Pressureを彷彿とさせる、感動的なコーラスを存分に聴かせてくれるM9のOpen Arms。
もはや毎度のことであるが、日本盤化がまだ決定していないようである。
忘れた頃に発売される(でも何故か全作日本盤化されてはいる)日本盤はほっといて、ぜひ本作を聴いてみてほしい。
流行には目もくれず、良い音楽だけを作り続ける彼らの堅実な姿勢と実力を伴った素晴らしい楽曲の数々に静かに感動するはずだ。

Guy Garvey率いる英国の5人組による2011年作。前作"Seldom Seen Kid"は同国のMercury Musci Prizeを受賞するなど、意外や着実な歩みを続けている彼ら。10年以上に渡ってオリジナルメンバー体制を崩していないところも、そのサウンドの求心力と無縁ではない。

ざわめく木々の葉ずれのような、あるいは煌めくせせらぎのようなナチュラルなパーカッションが息づき、豊かな量感を持ったメロディ、コーラス、ストリングスが力強いミュージックを隆起させていく。その細やかでアーティスティックな音作りはデビュー時から一貫しているが、本作では散りばめられるフックや音の深みがこれまでになく増して響き、どちらかといえば玄人好みだったバンドの音世界に良い意味でポピュラーな拡がりを生んでいる。

全てが黄金色の光に包まれていた幼少期を振り返るような柔らかなメロディと、色とりどりの感情が明滅する優しく、穏やかな深みを持った世界。個人的にこれまでベストだった彼らのデビュー作をより豊かに乗り越えた感のする、珠玉の1枚。

I'm a HUGE fan of Elbow. All of their albums have a unique flavor to them, while still sticking to their overarching style. Build A Rocket Boys! certainly does not disappoint in the slightest bit. It's a great follow-up to 2008's near-perfect The Seldom Seen Kid (my favorite Elbow album.) My only gripe with it is that it slows down about halfway through the album and never picks up the pace again. Open Arms begins to break out of the slow pace, but the second half still begins to feel like a Guy Garvey solo album rather than Elbow. And "The Birds (Reprise)" was just a bit throwing the theme over the top, having an old man sing it, reflecting on his time at home. But if that's your thing....

Lyrically, it's another masterpiece. I think some of the greatest lyrics ever by Garvey and some of the greatest lyrics ever period. Really the lyrics are what brings this album into the upper echelon of music.

I'd really give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars, and that's just comparing it to Elbow's other work. If this were to go against the pop music of today it would be an 11 out of 5 stars. I'm sure I'll be listening forever.

UPDATE: After listening to this multiple more times, it has grown on me and I am increasing it's score to a 5 out of 5. Still not the biggest fan of "The Birds (Reprise)" but it's the only lacking track on the album, and the rest is pure musical and lyrical genius. A great-follow up to their last success. Every album has it's own flavor, and this one's just took a little getting used to.

Elbow réussi à chaque fois à créer un album cohérent, tout en finesse et en puissance lyrique. Leur souci de se surpasser pour chaque premier morceau est renversant. The Birds ne fait pas exception à la règle. La voix de Guy Garvey si douce et profonde se marie magnifiquement avec ce rythme mécanique et le changement électronique est étonnament jubilatoire.

Sur le titre suivant, Lippy Kids, l'instrumentation laisse la première place au chant poignant qui devient plus lyrique et puissant. Il faut dire un mot de With Love. Ses choeurs et ses canons sont juste géniaux. Une remarquable composition du quintette qui prend aux tripes et qui vous tire le sourire. Neat Little Rows apporte un côté brut à un album vraiment très doux jusqu'à lors.

Les deux morceaux qui suivent sont deux morceaux de génie. Jesus is a Rochdale Girl est ni plus ni moins qu'un poème. Les larmes commencent à me troubler la vue... Une voix, un clavier et une reverb. C'est quasiment tout ce qui suffit à The Night Will Always Win pour me transporter loin...

La guitare fait son retour sur High Ideals sur une percussion presque tribale et converse avec les violons et les claviers avant l'entrée de Guy Garvey. The River aurait très bien sa place sur la BO d'un film contemplatif aux plans sobres soignés dans les moindres détails.

Arrive alors le désormais classique Open Arms, taillé pour les foules, qui s'il était de Coldplay serait décrié et par moi le premier. Ouais mais voilà, Guy Garvey a une putain de voix -oui je me répète je sais- et les goûts sont tout sauf logiques et impartiaux.

Et la c'est le drame avec The Birds (reprise) -c'est le titre- un morceau bizarre que je n'arrive toujours pas à me farcir après tout ce temps.

Dear Friends clôture Build a Rocket Boys avec poésie et légèreté, comme si on en avait pas eu assez.

Chez Elbow, tout est dans la voix de Guy Garvey et les arrangements brillants. Tous ces arpèges discrètement exécutés sans lesquels les morceaux perdraient en aura, ces cordes qui transportent l'auditeur, les claviers qui soutiennent la mélodie sans l'étouffer.

La sincérité et l'élégance british d'Elbow est encore inconnue chez nous et c'est dommage!
