For those who haven't read the books:
Scott Pilgrim is a twenty something Toronto resident. Aimless and unemployed member of a garage band he lives with super cool roommate Wallace Wells, and is dating a high school girl called Knives Chau.
All of which changes when he meets amazon delivery girl Ramona Flowers. The girl of his dreams. Literally.
To romance Ramona and win her he has to dump Knives and deal with the consequences. And battle Ramona's seven evil exes.
It's time for Scott to grow up....
Added to which, he sees pretty much everything like a video game. There's no explanation for that, so you just have to go with it.
Whilst Scott and Ramona aren't especially likeable and are both rather self absorbed to begin with, the former has to grow up and take responsibility over the course of the film, and the latter has to learn how to love again. So if you can get used to that, you won't mind them.
But there are a great selection of appealing supporting characters, and a superb ensemble cast to bring them to life.
The film begins with the usual universal studios opening done as an eight bit computer would show it and do the music. If that makes you laugh or means anything to you then you'll love it.
Getting six books into one film does mean it can feel like a rush through a lot of story at points, but there's so many great visuals and action sequences and some fun characters on display, and thus it's the kind of film you can watch again and again and always spot something new.
So it may be an acquired taste. But if it you're kind of thing, or you're a gamer, you should find it very appealing.
If you have read the books then you'll find that what starts out as looking as if might be an almost frame for frame translation at first - as it takes a while to get through volume one - then does have to become somewhat edited highlights afterwards. But it gets in as much as it can, so it's a laudable effort.
And it's a laudable effort as well in regards to the dvd. This being the kind of two disc special edition I haven't seen in a long time, as it's absolutely packed with extra stuff.
Disc one:
Four different commentaries, from various members of cast and crew.
An outtake reel. Unlike many this one actually has some genuinely funny moments - one take that had to be repeated umpteen times and some out of control props - rather than just people forgetting their lines or goofing around.
Lots of galleries of various aspects of the production.
Over twenty five minutes worth of deleted scenes, which can be watched all in a row or individually, and with or without a commentary from the director.
Disc two;
Documentaries:
A making of feature that runs for over fifty minutes and can be watched in one go or in sections. Although it's a rather abrupt end to part one if you do the former.
A feature on the music the cast play.
And the efforts of one to play the guitar.
Alternative footage:
Some alternative edits of various shots.
And some footage of general hi jinks on the set.
Music promos:
Four of the songs played in the film done as music videos [just montages of clips]
Nine short montages of dialogue set to music.
Trailers;
All the cinema trailers
All the tv ads for the film
And trailers for the video game version.
Pre production:
Pre production footage.
Lots of animatics of various scenes
Rehearsal vids.
Props rigs and sets montage.
Casting tapes.
Hair and makeup test footage.
A five minute feature on the sound effects.
A short section that animates a bit from the books with the backstory of character Kim Pine.
A short section that edits some of the dialogue in various scenes to make it tv friendly.
Visual effects:
A feature on the visuals.
One fight scene with a couple of unfinished visual effects.
And a montage of various fight scenes that had to be done with bluescreen work.
Most of the sections of extras can be watched all together or individually.
The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:
Languages: English, english audio description.
Subtitles: English, Arabic, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish.

Will you like it? Well, if you like quirky, highly inventive, visually spectacular films with great action and sharp humour, you will probably love it, but I can see that some simply won't get it.
Basically, if you're buying this as a conventional action/comic book adaption I'd advise that you look at the basic component parts before buying - Michael Cera is the superhero (so you know what you're getting), it's filmed in Canada with an English director and an quirky, English sense of humour.
So, if you like your humour obvious, your story structure conventional and your characters/situations to be believable don't buy it. This is not a conventional movie.
What it is is 10 times more imaginative than the usual Hollywood output and, though that bravery means that not absolutely everything works, the film's scattergun approach means there is a refreshing, surprising and highly entertaining bit that does work perfectly just around the corner.
The action scenes are just brilliant and never fail to surprise and delight, the one-liners are frequently hilarious and the whole quirky love story is quite touching, with really likable geeky characters.
With so many saying Avatar will be the 'game changer' for future cinema, I'd like to think Scott Pilgrim will have more of a lasting impact. Because, while Avatar will indeed change things from a technology, commercial and marketing point of view (much like Star Wars in the 70s) in terms of storytelling and characterisation it was as conventional, uninventive and hackneyed as they come.
Scott Pilgrim on the other hand has some truly new ideas that we can expect to see copied massively in the coming years. The disjointed storytelling takes some getting used to and is, on occasion, diverting, but it is very refreshing.
I can see why some compare this to Kick Ass. Because, although very different films, they buck the recent industry trend that superheroes need to be dark and saddled with serious grown-up issues (The Dark Knight and Watchmen for instance). Kick Ass and Scott Pilgrim are both serious fun in a world (much like our own) where its finally OK for geeks to become rockstars or superheroes.
Very highly recommended as long as you don't mind something a bit different.

I got my first copy at discount at HMV because I was spending a gift card. I thought it was a post Superbad slump Michael Cera movie. The trailer was not good. Had to return because the DVD was not working. It sat on my shelf for a while. Eventually heard Beck and Godrich were involved in the soundtrack. Then it was time for...
The awesome 8bit Universal studio music. This spoke to me.
The first scene and the generic are done in 5 minutes and 30 seconds. I then paused and rewatched. You're in the plot and know and love these characters in seconds.
It a gem. The comic book must be pretty solid, because this scenario is truly great. I am sure some of the subplots are more detailed in the books, but I the screenplay is tight and to the point. It hits every spot it aims for; and this movie is fast and witty. If you know the source material, no need to spoil anything about the plot, if you don't know anything about it, see it with no frame of reference other than "it's a great movie".
On the screen, it's an homage to vintage video-games. The editing, both visual and audio, is filled with clever transitions, visual clues, Easter eggs , smooth use of stylized special FX and of course one of the coolest soundtrack, both the new songs and old.
Impossible to not talk about the casting, with a few now star superheroes in memorable roles. Everyone involved delivers a knock-out performance. Brie Larson, it turn out, could have be a rock star.
So it's about an immature young adult in a band who meets the girl of his dreams. He has to fight for her and grow up. Not original when you put it that way. It involves fight scenes? That sounds lame cheesy.
But it works. It's perfect. You've never seen a movie like this.
The pace is so fast it is impossible to absorb all the details, and it is a perfectly fine if you watch it only once. But...
I bet you will rewatch this one a few times. It's a lot of fun and rich enough to keep you interested after you've seem it quite a few times, because, again, you've never seen a movie like this before.
Forget about "this is one of the greatest comic book adaptation ever", this is one of the greatest movie ever. Period.
