This is an amazing recording of an amazing orchestra with an amazing conductor. Harnoncourt is incredible in what he sees through the score and the music is just ...incredible.
Added bonus: the DVD with the rehearsal, the informative libretto..... a memory to cherish and a precious lesson in music and philosophy and life!

Um gleich mal das Allerschlimmste vorwegzunehmen: die Bildqualität ist absoluter Schrott. Es sieht aus wie ein VHS-Video, auf 1080x1920 „aufgeblasen“. Trüb, unscharf, pixelig, und außerdem ist die Kamera schlecht gelagert und macht andauernd kleine Nickbewegungen.
Zur Musik an sich kann ich nur sagen: Eines Stars wie Harnoncourt unwürdig.
Auch wenn ich davon absehe, dass es sich um eine Liveaufnahme handelt, und der eine oder andere Spielfehler eines Orchestermitglieds– insbesondere bei so einem Orchester – in Kauf genommen werden muss: Was hier zu hören ist, ist bestenfalls als Trauermusik bei einem Begräbnis geeignet. Wie lebendig ist dagegen die Aufnahme (1984) unter Vaclav Smetacek! Oder jene unter Wladimir Fedossejew (1986)!
Harnoncourt braucht 93 Minuten für „Ma Vlast“, wo Fedossejew kaum 77 benötigt, und Smetacek sogar nur knapp 70. Und dennoch klingt bei den Letzteren die slawische Seele durch, Harnoncourt ist aber meilenweit davon entfernt.
Außerdem ist die Tonqualität auch unter jeder Kritik. Von einer nur drei Jahre alten Aufnahme muss man sich wesentlich Besseres erwarten können.
Alles in Allem: vor diesem Produkt sei gewarnt!

The film of the rehearsal is very interesting and produces some passionate playing from the orchestra, especially in Vltava (The Moldau). Unfortunately, Harnoncourt forgot to retain the excitement for the performance. This is possibly the dullest recording of Vltava I have heard, although it may not sink to the level of his Concertgebouw performance available online. If you are interested in Harnoncourt's Ma Vlast, the RCA recording with the Vienna Philharmonic is very well played and recommendable; he is an inspired guide especially to the last three tone poems in the cycle. I would buy this again only for the rehearsal film.
